31:03 Yall have to remember it's not necessarily because Zendayas character was "freaky" She was also a colored woman falling in love with a white man. It wasn't something common back then
@VictoriaVaughn-p3vКүн бұрын
Also because any form of entertainment that didn't seem to really have a purpose was looked down on. So she's not only a colored woman dating a white man, she's an acrobat too.

I haven’t finished the reaction but just a quick note, he doesn’t join a circus in the beginning of the movie, he joined the american railroad to build roads, the “circus” as seen in the film was invented by him. In real life he wasn’t a good guy but this is a really good movie. And Zac Efron’s character y based on “Bailey”
@david.sandler272 күн бұрын
The singing was ALL done by the actors themselves! There are rehearsal videos out there which show of their talent better than the movie itself imo. The only exception is 'Never Enough' The actress liked the "preview version" so much she decided to lipsync instead of singing it herself.

Zac Efron and Zendaya does sing in the movie and the soundtrack, but 2 years after the movie released, there was a Greatest Showman Reimagined album where famous singers covered the songs. That's where James Arthur and Anne Marie covered it.
@declanmcarthur862 күн бұрын
Thank god, I know I couldn't have been the only person to go, "Hang on... does he mean James Arthur? Who did a cover, and not the actual song in the movies." I paused and went straight to the comments to see who else picked up on that.

The circus started in 1919 when the Barnum & Bailey's Greatest Show on Earth, a circus created by P. T. Barnum and James Anthony Bailey, was merged with the Ringling Bros. World's Greatest Shows. The Ringling brothers purchased Barnum & Bailey Ltd. in 1907 following Bailey's death in 1906, but ran the circuses separately until they were merged in 1919.

Zac Efron did sing all the songs in this movie though. Also, the stunts during “Rewrite The Stars” was mostly done by Zac and Zendaya. There’s behind the scenes of them doing the stunts/tricks. Zendaya literally trained like an actual trapeze performer before filming the movie. Zac came in later just for that one scene and had to learn it and was super impressed with Zendaya cuz she looked so natural like a legit trapeze performer.

So Circus meant basically the same thing it does now but it was derogatory because forms of entertainment that didnt seem to have a direct person were looked down on. Because any form of being a free spirit was considered stupid more or less. Even though some of the characters dont necessarily look different from anyone else like Zendaya's character and Barnum himself you were still looked down on for associating yourself with people who were different. Zendaya was not only looked down on for being part of the circus, she had a specific niche of being an acrobat on top of the obvious racism and dating a man who was outside her economic class

So, this film is hugely inaccurate as concerns the history of Barnum, and just takes a lot of artistic license. It was not a play/musical beforehand- the script was written for the sake of having Jackman play Barnum after an offhand comment comparing the two's showmanship while preparing an Oscars Ceremony. There is an alternate version of "Rewrite the Stars" featuring other singers that was also on the radio, but it is the two Zs singing it here- ironically, though, "it would be a shame to have Zac Efron in a musical and not have him sing" that was very much the case in the first "High School Musical." Jenny Lind's singing voice, though, did not end up being performed by Rebecca Ferguson. "Never Be Enough" and "This is Me" both also got kind of well-known outside of filmgoers- the latter won the Oscar for Best Original Song in a Film that year. As to Lind's visit in America, it was in the 1850's, so this is still slavery-era, and even though there wouldn't be much in NY, there was still racism aplenty, especially against an interracial relationship like the one shown between Phillip and Anne (and to note: at the start of his "career", Barnum used a loophole to "lease" a slave- Joice Heth, a ~70 y.o. woman "believed" to be a 160 yo former slave of George Washington, whom he forced to work as an exhibition 10-12 hrs per day, then publicly autopsied after her death for spectacle and further profit). To be clear: it's an enjoyable, fun film, the truth regarding its subject Barnum is just not nearly so sunny.
