Today we're looking at the 2004 kids movie Sleepover, starring Alexa Vega, Brie Larson, Steve Carell, Jane Lynch, Evan Peters and more! How did such a star studded cast appear in a movie that doesn't break even and is a flop at the box office? Well, for starters we can talk about the confusing script, too much product placement, and over abundance of cliche teen movie adventure. This coming of age comedy leaves a lot to be desired, with plenty of confusing moments to break down and look at clip by little clip! Okay, who wrote the 'doesn't want to hook up' subplot for a 14-year-old mean girl, because YIKES. It kinda feels like they wrote the characters as high school seniors or college undergrads and then remembered they were making a movie for middle-schoolers...

By the way, Tree Surgeon is a real profession. (That's not the official term but it's really common colloquially). Trees get cancer and diseases and stuff that can be well, surgically removed. So there are tree surgeons who travel around treating historic and rare trees all over the US and world. They have to be good at climbing and at botany and using the correct tools, etc. Obviously it's only for like, hundreds of years old heritage trees that are under threat, usually. Typically they're in national parks or important sites and that's who pays for the tree(s) to be saved. I wanted to be one when I was a teenager lol. So that aspect of this movie is actually accurate to my teenage girl experience, which was around this era too. P.S. Tree tumors are actually quite valuable for their whorled pattern. It's called burl. It is often illicitly cut off of trees by some bandit with a chainsaw.

There seems to be a trend here with underage actresses kissing actors that are in their 20s. Alexa vegan was 14, this dude was 21 or 22. Selena Gomez was 15 and that dude was 26. I heard somewhere that most movies which are "high school movies" are actually kinda about college (based on the behaviors of the students like sex, drugs, etc.) but they just make it high school to make it more relatable to the masses and younger audiences. This could be a situation like that

ok MANY thoughts as someone who has surprisingly watched this movie many times as an adult!! 1. i, too, HATE the name julie corky 2. your impression of the girls giggling on their laptop is actually a reenactment of me when i watch your videos 3. correction: sara paxton was the replacement marnie in the fourth halloweentown movie, kimberly j brown did 1-3 4. i thought it was just me who never fully grasped staci's pivot to this sleepover scavenger hunt after getting dumped. even my most recent viewing i was like "am i always just not paying attention or what bc idk how this whole thing got started or why" 5. i am deeply obsessed with all the product placement in this movie but my FAVORITE by far is the electric car, especially when yancy does an ad-read for how long it takes for the car to fast charge 6. justice for yancy, she really needed a plot besides "i'm fat." also kills me the scene where they're walking into the dance at the end and the camera focuses on julie, hannah, and farrah, and yancy is several steps behind them completely out of focus. talk about her feeling invisible 7. second to the electric car product placement, my next favorite scene is the morning after the sleepover julie wakes up on the floor with a whole head of natural curls and then two minutes later when they go downstairs for breakfast she's got a fresh blowout straight from the drybar. putting in a formal request for you to do a clip breakdown on alexa vega's most iconic (imo) role, the 2005 lifetime classic odd girl out. thank you in advance king

I got into this movie on a child’s ticket, as in less than 12 years old, when I was GODDAMN 24! I randomly saw this movie in the theater, in the afternoon, with my then-new-boyfriend’s mother. (Now my mother-in-law!) It was a bonding day of lunch, shopping, a movie, and her telling me not to dare break her son’s heart. Anyway, as I said, I was 24 years old. The ticket person glanced at us and said “One adult, one child?” And we just squeaked “but of course!” I think it was the combination of the type of movie, the time of day, who I was with, the fact that I’m tiny, and that I was wearing a Girls XL Care Bears t-shirt. Now, at 40, I look back in that moment as even more of an achievement.
