Schools around here have pretty elaborate kindergarten, 5th grade and 8th grade graduations lol (although they didn’t become a thing until recently, I doubt any middle school in 2003 had huge graduations. It seems to be a product of social media) Maybe this movie was just ahead of its time.

I think it would’ve been good if Paulo had a buddy with him, almost like a “manager” instead of just the body guard. That way when Kate was talking about not getting an Italian boys attention Lizzie could’ve got them together. That way when the principal was going upstairs, instead of Gordo taking the fall you could’ve seen Kate run up the stairs while the principal got stuck in the elevator. Then using her blonde hair Kate could’ve covered up, pretended to be Lizzie, and then Gordo would’ve been all like “why are you helping?” And then Kate would’ve been like “ let’s say I’m returning the favor.” That way the story wouldn’t have that plot hole, Kate and Lizzie could’ve reignited their old friendship to fill in the missing Miranda, and we could’ve had two cute love stories that would’ve been more cohesive. (Or even help Kate get with Ethan so she doesn’t care about and getting an Italian boy. Either way).

Weirdly enough the Lizzie/Gordo plane montage was one of my favorite parts of the movie bc it establishes first the excitement of going on this amazing trip with one your best friends without any parents and it also shows their relationship a bit more. I think it was set up this way so that it hits harder when Lizzie abandons Gordo to be with Paolo & leaves the audience thinking of Gordo throughout the film because we see this foundational look into their friendship. I think it’s super cute and sweet lol

Matt was an exhausting character lmao, he wasn't likable, he wasn't relatable, he just existed to create artificial conflict for Lizzie in the most obnoxious way. The reason why most movies and shows do this is for two reasons. 1. Love is something almost everyone can relate to. Crushed, heartbreaks, fantasizing, dating. In some form or another, we can all relate to it and it hits HARDER than just being friends. 2. Love plotlines are so much more exciting when you're little. Kids don't know much about romance so this is a way for them to experience the thrill and fantasy without going through it themselves. I get what you're saying and not every story needs it but having romance in almost any story does add different levels and excitement that friendship just doesn't.

Totally agree. It had the energy of a girl giving a kiss to a guy to be polite, whereas Gordo gave off such strong “Lizzie is the light of my universe” energy so it was kind of an anti-climactic moment for their relationship. Also, it’s been a while since I’ve seen the movie but I think there should have been a stronger moment for Lizzie to realise her feelings for Gordo so that their kiss didn’t seem as tacked on.

It has much better development and stakes, and made my preteen heart hurt much more.

Honestly got a bit misty at the airport mom hug. When I decided to just buy a plane ticket and go to Europe alone at 18 (…it was a different time), I ran out of the customs line to go back out and cry in my moms arms. I think I begged her to say I couldn’t go and the trip was cancelled. I was petrified suddenly now that I was at the airport. It wasn’t just buying tickets and having fun looking at guidebooks and maps. No. I had to actually like…talk to strangers and speak up for myself.
