Fans were enjoying and having so much fun watching this live in every setlist at recent concerts with The Babyklok Tour around the US, you don't wanna miss the chance to see them live and performing this, we always love the shanenigans between the girls in the middle section after the breakdown. This was released in 2013 when having around 13/14 and 15 yo, so is one of their early hits and is full of japanese elements, like the "shamizen", a japanese traditional instrument, and is a party festival song (matsuri). "Sore" "seiya" and "soya" are typical shouts among Japanese festival and it works like a "c'mon!" or "let's go" for them. During the breakdown you can hear another typical japanese folk song called "Sakura Sakura" and they're doing a traditional Japanese dance. You were pretty close with the interpretation of the lyrics, in summary is about female empowerment and when you follow the lyrics it's pretty clear about it, "Megitsune" means female fox (vixen) and they talk about women acting with a smile in their face while crying inside, just to fit in society or what is expected from them, when they're kind to you they're not trying to make falling in love with them, they're just being their own way, and men tend to confuse and think they're cheating or deceiving like the mythological fox. "Megitsune" used to be a peyorative term in Japanese culture, pretty much just like around the world, but BM is using this as a way to empower women despite the meaning itself. When SuMetal is pulling out the "tanto" she's saying "maidens shouldn't be underestimated", that refers to a japanese mob film about some boss mafia daughter before attacking someone. During live performance she does something different and looks really cool doing it. Megitsune is a quintessential BM song and among top ranking songs by fans, SuMetal said she didn't mastered yet, that's why she used to sound check with this song before live concerts. The origin of the "fox sign" is really long to explained but here's a short summary: The Fox God (Kitsune Sama) is the Metal God who sent these girls (and Kami Band after to help them with the metal sound) to unify the world and set them free from Jpop slavery. The kitsune sign came out by accident around the time they created the group by the girls when trying to imitate the typical metal horn sign they noticed it was similar when doing fox shadow shape, they implemented this as part of the lore, imagery, theme and live concerts, the lore is huge so take your time and keep digging and riding the Foxhole 🦊🤘 Btw they praised for real and made a ritual to the Fox God for this song to be a hit and successful, and thanks to the Fox God this is one of their major hits and favorite BM fan songs. -NotACult- 👀 This is a song with the arrangements by YuppeMetal, he took inspiration from "Memphis May Fire - The Sinner" for the drum section, another song that i recommend you for your own time if you want. Great reaction - and well done, your interpretation of the lyrics isn't so far off at all. This is their female empowerment song and possibly a push back against the traditional role of females in Japanese society (while paying homage to and honouring those who have played that role over the centuries). Funny you should mention cherry blossoms ... the melody during the break down with the pig squeal screamo is from a very well known traditional Japanese song called 'Sakura Sakura' - Cherry Blossoms. When Su pulled the tanto (short blade) from her mic she said "Maidens ... should not be underestimated". The last part of this is a famous quote from a Japanese gangster movie spoken by the daughter of a gang boss. In live performances she says this and does a high kick. Talking of live performances - this is a great video (all the official videos are very good), but to see BABYMETAL in their "truest form" you really need to see them performing live, that is when they are really in their element. Given the meaning of this song my favourite live performance was at the Red Fox Festival in 2017 where they played to an exclusively female audience (they had a short series of concerts with very specific audiences - all female, all male, all children and grandparents, all in corpse face paint, all teenagers ... and a final Big Fox Festival where all were welcome). They used 'Megitsune' to open the concert and you can imagine how a theatre completely full of girls and women reacted.

Another excellent reaction, thanks! And good job at guessing the meaning of the lyrics. Actually you nailed it without knowing the allegoric side related to the figure of the kitsune (fox). The word "Megitsune" = "me" + "kitsune" which means female + fox so a vixen. Hence the "kitsune" masks (and fox emojis) everywhere. In the Japanese tradition the "kitsune" is an entity which is able to transfigure into a human form, mainly into the form of a young lady, with the objective to deceive men and cause them pain. So they sing that they aren't kitsunes but megitsunes, "pure-hearted maiden-like female foxes". BABYMETAL fans are known collectively as "The ONE" but "kitsune/megitsune" individually. So you can tell this song is important! "Megitsune" is one of their most loved songs by fans and their most played live one (up to 293 tines and counting!). It's also my favorite song alongside "Akatsuki". The genre is some sort of electronicore, a mix between electronica and metalcore with a hardcore style breakdown. It was released on June 2013 so Su-metal was 15 years old while Yuimetal and Moametal were both 13 (about to turn 14). That breakdown hits hard and besides the pig squeals, the melody is from a very known Japanese folk song called "Sakura Sakura" (Cherry Blossoms). Also, Sakura Gakuin (Cherry Blossoms Academy) was the J-pop idol group where they originated as a sub-unit. Yes, like the cherry blossom you mentioned... coincidence? One of their favorite sentences is "nothing happens by accident" so, judge by yourself. 😁 About the music video itself, in my opinion, is a masterpiece. And about its locations: - The stage where they are performing is called Nohgakudo at Asagaya Shinmei-gu Shrine in Tokyo. This is a stage where music and dances are performed during festivals. - The shrine right before the breakdown with the orange-ish torii gates is the famous Fushimi Inari-taisha in Kyoto. The girls were so happy that the director traveled to Kyoto just to film that sequence. Finally, as an anecdote / fun fact, it took 36 demos to Takehiro Mamiya best known as Yuyoyuppe (or Yuppemetal), the song's arranger, until Kobametal (their producer) was 100% happy with the final result. It may sound crazy but this is why "Megitsune" is one of their best songs (if not the best). I believe that the natural next step is to watch a live performance. With a pure vocal performance and an official M/V knocking around in the ole noggin, it's probably a good time for a true live performance. There are SO SO many quality ones to chose from. The One (Babymetal fandom) can surely guide you. I personally would recommend Road of Resistance Live from Japan (Official). Sonosphere 2014 Live is high quality as well, as this was (I believe) BM's first tour outside of Japan. So many quality choices from Budokan 2021 as well.

Baby Metal has so much amazing music from its very beginnings to now they're still going incredibly strong, but Megitsune still ranks as my all time favorite. Truly the epitome of what Baby Metal is all about. And your interpretation is spot on. It's all about how women are usually expected to just listen and obey, put on a face and accept their role in society, expected to be weak and delicate, but it's all an act and they're so much stronger and more than that, but they accept their role and play the part because society would crumble without them doing so.

Megitsune is still my favorite BABYMETAL song, video and choreography. Su has mentioned that this is one of her favorite songs, even though it's a difficult one for her to sing live. She hopes to sing it perfectly some day. : ) The performers pretending to play the traditional Japanese instruments in this video are dancers with the Movement Design group. Chidori Yakumo is their director. She is the woman performing the fan dance during the breakdown. Megitsune has been performed live more than any other BABYMETAL song, and frequently tops fan polls for favorite song.

Yes, Japan is very patriarchic. Of course, it is developing and my own information is old, I have to admit. In the days of my information girls were supposed to work as hostesses to shops, marry and then be housewives. Now, of course, girls in Sweden that was born say in the 1920-ies and earlier also were kind of supposed to be housewives. How is it 2023 in Japan? I am not 100% sure, but my experience is that they are very conservative.

Kitsune = Fox. Megitsune = female fox. Megitsune is also slang for a manipulative woman. The Fox is the biggest symbol of Babymetal. The girls didn't write the lyrics. So take that as you want. The lyrics and song were written by various professionals. Yuyoyuppe was one of the composers for Megitsune and he composed Monochrome. You should really do the real version of Monochrome. It's a fantastic song.

Hell yea! You’re pretty close with interpretation of this song. This is a classic Babymetal favorite, and one of their earliest songs. It has been performed live by Babymetal almost 300 times in past ~13 years. I highly suggest Monochrome, live. You did the First Take piano version, now you can contrast it to the regular, live version. This also shows you the newer more mature Babymetal.
