1. An old shipmate of mine was onboard the Enterprise when they filmed this. 2. Gooses death was not Maverick's fault. Iceman was bogarting his LOS approach and they got caught in the jet wash. Everything that could have gone wrong, did. 3. I spent 24 years in the US Navy. 6 on "bird farms" (Carriers). I have seen 1000+ launches and landings without a single crash. These men, women and the men and women working the flat tops are doing the most dangerous job in the world (for the good guys). Shout out 4. Onboard the ship/aircraft all the perspiration is Hollywood (not the pilot). There is AC onboard. 11. The TOP GUN school is no longer located at Miramar near San Diego. The ariel work in that movie makes this one seems like they were practicing. Better yet, it has a plot. (besides Navy recruitment).

This movie came out just before I joined the Navy and became a mechanic for the engines in the F-14 Super Tomcat, which was cool. While not very accurate, this movie was very cool. The "fire" at the end of the engine is the after burner. It must be on when the jet launches from the aircraft carrier and when the pilot wants the jet to go fast. Not every jet is a two-seater, but the F-14 was. In the Navy, the person who sits behind the pilot is called a RIO (Radar Intercept Officer). He basically is the lookout and scans the area for any threats. In the FA-18 (which took the place of the F-14), there is no RIO.

Basically its a huge machine gun with a plane built around it. The A-10 Warthog's role is ground support, not air-to-air. They fly in low and slow and release hell fire on the enemy on the ground. Miss Campbell's A-10 took multiple direct hits from RPG's, mortars, and bullets. Parts of the plane were literally blown off! She still managed to fly back and land safely at the base. Wow...just wow!!

The Navy, intense compared to the other branches of service? ROFL. I think you would have benefitted by having someone who served aboard an aircraft carrier, sitting beside you. The reason they were so sweaty in the beginning is because they were in the Indian Ocean. Some of the spaces aboard a carrier are air conditioned, but most of the ship is a sweatbox for the deployment. Naval rank is the hardest to recognize, especially in their whites. While officers do wear the traditional "stars and bars" like the other branches, their rank is totally different. They don't have General...they have Admirals.
@havok62802 ай бұрын
Given that Marines are in the Department of the Navy, she isn't far off. The Navy is certainly more intense than the Air Firce or the Coast Guard. Navy SEALs are the most selective special operators. And Naval aviators are the best of the best. As far as the sweat, you are mostly correct, but CIC is air conditioned. All that electronic equipment needs to stay cool.

They earn their Call Sign on flight school by their classmates. It's almost never a compliment. Usually it commemorates a screw up or something embarrassing reworded as a funny name. The fire coming out of the jets is Afterburner. They dump extra fuel into the hot jet gasses to give it extra thrust, at the expense of burning tons more fuel. The guy in the back is called the RIO, Radar Intercept Officer. He handles the radar, electronics and is the lookout for the pilot while he concentrates on flying. The F-14 Tomcat had a very powerful radar and the cockpit came with hundreds of dials, displays and switches. You really needed 2 people to fly it.

@MrKINSM2 ай бұрын
@@M1cha3lP As jets have become more singular mission focused...i.e. specific jets for air to air, air to ground, air to sea, recon, etc.....moving to single seaters has made the aircraft much more versatile and maneuverable. But the best answer is $ savings and new technology, computer automation has helped replace the backseater. Most dual seat jets have now been mothballed or are used as trainers, they weigh more - are not fuel efficient, are less agile, and require 2 highly trained individuals instead of 1. We are moving to a point where the pilot will be some guy sitting on a couch 2,000 miles away remotely controlling the aircraft- the new Top Gun film shows that tech to some degree.

Okay, here's some of the information you were hinting that you were interested in understanding. The f-14 tomcat, the aircraft that Tom Cruise/ Maverick flies is a two-seater fighter aircraft. The pilot sits in front and the Rio sits in back. In the United States Navy, The f-14 tomcat had a record of 5-0. There weren't many engagements for that aircraft, because there weren't very many wars during that time where air-to-air combat was a component. It was a pretty good aircraft and much better than the F4 phantom from the Vietnam era. But it did have engine problems. But when it worked it was fast and maneuverable. We sold f-14s to Iran and they had over 150 kills with the aircraft, according to their numbers. So it is a pretty prolific aircraft, but they did also lose f-14s in air-to-air combat. The F-16 is 76 to zero in air-to-air combat, it is a single seat fighter aircraft with a single F100 engine and it is extremely maneuverable. An F16 eluded six surface-to-air missiles when it ran out of counter measures in the Gulf War. By far the best record of any fighter aircraft in history is the F-15 eagle, it looks very similar to the f-14 in this film, but it is fixed Wing because it doesn't take off and land on aircraft carriers so it doesn't need the wings to spread out. The F-15 eagle is the most lethal fighter aircraft ever in combat. It's record in air-to-air. Combat is 104 to zero. During the Gulf War and F-15 engaged A Russian MiG-25 foxbat head on, they approached each other at well over Mach 3. The mig-25 turned and tried to evade The F-15 C, It turned out to be the worst decision and last decision of his life. The F-15 did a 12g turn and killed the foxbat in about 30 seconds. That means a 200 lb pilot weighed 2,400 lb during that turn. His head which would weigh approximately 20 lb and maybe another four with the helmet weighed well over 250 lb. During that turn. Keep in mind, f-15 pilots do not wear g suits, they can't because it would affect the joystick which is between their legs. An F16 and an f22 have the joystick on the side. If you want to see how fast the F-15 eagle is, look up F-15 and rocket, there's a guy that did a really good video about it. The other aircraft in that engagement, the mig-25 foxbat held all of the speed records for Ascent and pure speed. The F-15 streak eagle shattered them. An F-15 can take off and get to 60,000 ft in under 2 minutes, it can break the sound barrier going straight up. The f22 Raptor is just technologically superior and is the only American aircraft that actually can do the Cobra maneuver that you saw them do twice in the film. The f-14 cannot do a cobra maneuver. But it was nice in the film. Two Russian fighters can do the Cobra maneuver, the su-27 and the su-30, but they are inferior aircraft to the F-15 eagle and cannot shoot down an F-22 Raptor. They would have to have luck on their side to get an F-15. The f22 Raptor can easily do the Cobra maneuver, in fact they can hover in a cloud with their tail down and just sit there without being seen. The f22 is a pure stealth aircraft that has the radar signature of a bumblebee or marble. A pair of F4 phantoms, flown by Iranian pilots tried to shoot down a second drone last year. They had shot down one of our drones or knocked it off course and caused it to crash. They were getting ready to do it to a second drone. Meanwhile, underneath them were sitting two f-22 raptors. They didn't know they were there. They had been flying underneath them for about 5 minutes when it looked like they were getting in position to try and shoot down the drone. So one of the f-22 raptors slowly rose up from beneath them and opened up his mic. He told them I don't think you want to shoot that drone down. You should probably go home now. Something to the effect anyway. They went home immediately. It had to have startled them to have two United States top of the line aircraft following them without them seeing them. Russia has a stealth aircraft called the su- 57, but it is garbage just like everything else Russia has. The Thunderbirds, the United States Air Force demonstration team are extraordinary and they fly f-16s. The Blue Angels flight f-18 super hornets. Those groups of pilots are the best in the world. Nobody is better than those guys. I know there's a documentary that shows the Blue Angels, I don't remember what platform it's on. It's probably on Amazon, but I don't remember which one for sure. That would give you a lot more information on the pilots. Also, call signs are not self-created. Call signs are usually derogatory, not complementary. They're given to rookie pilots by their more experienced peers. My favorite call sign ever is in the second top gun movie, but I'm not going to spoil it for you. You'll know it when you see it/ hear it. I wanted to be a fighter pilot when I was 15, I wanted to fly F-15 eagles and I had a friend named John in junior ROTC with me that was going to be my wingman. But my eyesight went bad between my freshman and sophomore years so flying a fighter aircraft was never going to be in my future. You have to have better than perfect vision to be a fighter pilot. Hope this helps with some of your questions that I heard during the reaction. Oh and one last cool thing about the F-15 eagle. There was an Israeli F-15 that accidentally clipped another aircraft. While they were flying and lost part of its right wing. They went into a flat spin like the example in top gun that killed goose. But the F-15 has so much power with its two F100 engines that the pilot punched it and was able to pull out of the flat spin. He decided to try and land as he was only 14 mi away from the runway. After he landed the plane at a higher speed because of the missing lift from The right wing. He opened his cockpit and looked out the window, he wasn't missing part of the right wing. He was missing the entire right wing. He managed to land his jet with only one Wing. There aren't many aircraft that can do that. I think I've only seen one other aircraft that was a propeller driven aircraft make a landing and that pilot had to been one of the greatest pilots ever. The funniest aircraft story I've ever heard is the SR-71 Blackbird, I can't remember the pilot's name, but it's the funniest and coolest story you will ever hear and it is available on KZbin. It's called the speed check. If you search speed check sr71 you will get the story. I'm not going to spoil anything about that either. The sr-71 is a spy plane that goes faster than Mach. 3. The F-15 goes close to Mach 3 but not quite there. About Mach 2.7 for the older versions and the current one the f15ex can go about Mach 2.9. Anyway, sorry for the long explanation, but I wanted to answer all of your questions about the fighter aircraft that the United States has used over the past 40 years. The F-15 is 50 years old and is still an effective aircraft that can defeat almost any other aircraft other than the f-22 and the f-35. I enjoyed your reaction and hope this provided some of the answers you were looking for.

Viper may very well have given Jester a proper bollocking later, with the doors closed, but Maverick isn't entitled to be there, and letting him see how that bit of the sausage is made would only undermine his own upbraiding.

The real other reason to keep the mask on from the get go is to put the radio mike within the proper distance, without in-cabin noise jamming-up their calls.

My friend's grandfather, retired USAF, coordinated the aeronautical stuff, dogfights, etc. for this film, so we had the chance to see the raw footage before the film was released -- no music, no dialogue, just jets zipping around the stratosphere, which was pretty amazing. We passed on seeing the film in the theaters because we didn't really go in for that kind of jingoistic, neo-fasch pablum, but it was still pretty cool to have a personal connection to the making of a huge Hollywood blockbuster.

Nicki, please don't take this the wrong way, but, you're supposed to be reacting to the scenes, not a constant commentary. It kind of kills the moments.

The song from the jukebox at the end is the song that the guys sang to "Charlie" during the pic-up scene in the beginning. Talk about short-term memory issues!
@ronaldmillner63872 ай бұрын
OMG, why do you guys that do reactions talk so much especially doing the dialog. Damm
@lennea232 ай бұрын
Because it’s a movie reaction and It’s my job to comment on the film that I am watching. If you’d like to watch a film without any commentary then I recommend Hulu or Netflix.
@ronaldmillner63872 ай бұрын
@lennea23 Commenting every 5 secs when u don't even know what's going on is not a reaction, it's a butcher job. Get a dictionary and find the definition of reaction
@newnotefinder89722 ай бұрын
I tried to watch this reaction but could only last 1 min and 12 seconds. Too annoying the lips can stop and don’t have to keep moving through the whole reaction.
