The unthinkable is here. Fed by up home prices and a lack of support, the homeless are now just creating their own communities. I explored such a camp on Maui.

The fastest growing group of homeless is the very elderly. Their /social /security checks didn't keep pace with inflation so they cannot afford rents anywhere. Didn't FDR promise we'd never see homeless old people on our streets again?

@@billding7073 , we can do BOTH. We can help defend the freedom of Ukraine AND provide housing for our elderly. The ultra rich are simply not being taxed enough. I lay this problem on state and county governments, not the federal government. Basic shelter is a HUMAN RIGHT, and local jurisdictions need to raise enough tax money to get the homeless off the streets and provide safe housing. I am a free market person and not a socialist. But for a free market to survive, the basic human needs of a society need to be met. Otherwise, you're just going to invite an eventual revolution.

Yes but the outlandish cost of living has surpassed the Social Security benefit rates. Those rates need to be increased by a lot for Seniors to stay in their homes. The measly COLA raises don't begin to keep up with the true costs of today.

I live in a bigger city and a doctor and his wife bought a huge piece of land. Their idea was to build tiny homes on it for the homeless. They would rotate others through as folks moved. The city stopped all plans because they couldn’t get enough tax money off of it. They put roadblocks at every turn. The doctor finally gave up and is selling the land. Now we are back to encampments that look like this. It’s a shame!

I talk to homeless in Hawaii daily. They’re out during the day. There are many reasons why: They might have a job, but it’s also prime time to collect cans, beg, or sell drugs. It’s when they can eat or shop. It’s hot and they like to find shade. This group sounds like they work well together, but they often steal from one another. You don’t want people to know where your stuff is. Sometimes people follow you at night, too. I’m shocked you haven’t run into all the no trespassing people that have signs everywhere!

The US needs to build social housing the same way as in Vienna, Austria. Nick, I highly recommend you to visit Vienna. Most of the housing on the market is social housing owned by the government and it's between €400-€600 to rent a place. A small percentage of the housing supply is actually private. You can call out socialism as you want, but if there's one thing the Soviet Union did right after WW2 was social housing. They built up concrete prefab buildings all over the Eastern Block. On each block, you had everything for day to day life. Tons of greenery, playgrounds, kindergartens, schools. Shops on the bottom floor. Car-free neighborhoods and public transportation was close by. Most of the people in commie blocks own their apartments. People in the West mock them, but it's much better than being homeless. When people moved into these in the 60s they were shocked by these buildings. Many people didn't have running water, multiple rooms, and people in villages only had dirt as the floor. In these buildings, you pay for the mutual cost, and residents put money away together to insulate the building which really is the only thing missing plus AC. In a social democratic utopia, every resident of a country should have a social housing unit available in case they become homeless/sick or disabled.

According to the government, these people are engaging in criminal activity. The creation of these villages is actually illegal. As it now stands, no matter what you do, no matter how hard working you may be, if you don't have access to a lot of money, you're a criminal. The people who built that village are not the ones who are 'ruining' Hawaii. The people who are ruining Hawaii are those who are making it impossible for people to live
