I'm sure that's how the original inhabitants felt ( Native Americans). Unfortunately it wasn't a non-profit organization that moved them out but government and Army. I say this because it leaves me on the fence about their situation. One I feel they should be left alone because it's part of the diversity of American life and then on the other hand I see it as a delayed Karma from the past. It's a tough call. It also reminds me of the gentrification that is currently happening in the big cities.

@Joe_J-MT_Boy Жыл бұрын
They don't 'give up their land'. They sell it for more money than they could ever take from it raising grain or cattle or sheep. When you can do that and never work another day in your life, what do you do? Hang around and tough it out so Lewistown can survive as it was? There's no logic there. In the high country, the millionaires and billionaires buy these legacy ranches and post it to local hunters. Their rich buddies fly in and enjoy some of the best hunting on the planet, cropping off trophy bull elk... and maybe THEN the landowner opens his place up to the regular citizens. If he doesn't, when the elk start tearing apart his hay stacks, FWP won't police a Special Season on that ranch to get the elk numbers down to a more manageable population level. How did they get control of that legacy ranch? Answer: the legacy rancher sold it to them. When it happens and it's far away from where you live = no big deal. If it's close and the ranch that sold is one you're familiar with, well... that's different. Right? Hypocritical... good word.

They may be super right wings, but they do understand global warming and conservation. After all, that's the future of their business. But I can also assure folks that farmers are the hardest working people I've ever met in my life. They are out there tending to the lifestock no matter how cold it is, It could be negative twenty, and they are out there early in the morning, taking care of business. It's an open market, and I hope the cowboys understand that no matter how much money they are offered, they do not have to sell. I get offered big dollars all the time for my bit of heaven. At age 34, I finally moved out of the smalltown area that I lived in all my life. There is literally one big circle of people that run and influence EVERYTHING, from private business to even local government and those people are all connected. They're on your school boards, town councils, filling up your churches, etc. It was to the point where you couldn't even get a job you were qualified for because one person in that circle may not have liked you and made sure everyone else (like your hiring manager) knew about it. Everyone knew everyone and they scratched each other's back, right or wrong. I didn't play that game and never fit in my hometown area. It took a long time but I finally got out into a more diverse area making 50% more than what I was earning back "home". Truth is, if you don't have the right last name, or you're not in that "circle" and don't play small town politics, your success and happiness is going to be very limited in a small town. Get out!

"You can't replace the sense of community with tourism." Truer words were never spoken. As an example look at Palm Springs, California. Short term rentals have changed neighborhoods into motel rows.

There's a 'glamping' outfit called Paws Up Resort on Hwy 200 between Ovando and Missoula. Their staff can no longer afford to live within a reasonable driving distance, so the resort owners' solution was to buy 2 motels in Seeley Lake and rent them to their employees. Rich folks don't like to wait on themselves. So what does that do to the town of Seeley Lake? Those employees don't spend money in that town like the tourists do, so the town takes a hit economically. What's happening in Montana is not just one thing. Our troubles are primarily due to too many people in the beautiful places. They are loving Montana to death.

lovely share, I do love small towns, they are quiet and mostly safe and friendly.I live in a small town(village) without a traffic light and I could not imagine being anywhere else.A trip to Zurich or Bern makes me feel like fish out of water. Another great video, Nick. I love seeing how others live. I grew up on Cedar St. in San Bernardino (born in Oxnard) and my parents bought property and built a house near Wrightwood, CA in the early 70’s, where we spent some great years until I shipped off to the military. Since then, my wife and I have lived in seven different states and settled north of Bentonville, AR, two miles from the Missouri border. This is a great place to be (minus three months of humidity, yuk) but we are seeing it grow too fast for our liking. Fortunately, the folks I’ve met that are moving here from California and other states are just looking for a better life in a free state.

Nick, I emphasize your situation...especially being a former Montana resident myself. Lewistown being no exception - they are very close-knit, don't like outsiders, and much more. I lived in Kalispell myself, and even I felt like I was being watched. My late wife was from Polson, and she felt the same way, too. Pretty scenery of the town, so yes, the social scene there in Lewistown (at times) can reach a definite negative zero. Happy travels!

Why would you "feel" you were being watched? There are plenty of odd people here in Kalispell and that's pretty common. So maybe you were just too self conscience?

Greetings from rural Kansas - another small town on the prairie. Your intriguing video made me wonder why I have never heard of a group like APR in these parts. It appears that APR focuses on buying up parcels of land adjacent to large government-owned tracts (BLM, State of Montana, etc.) In Kansas the settlement pattern was different. Kansas was actively homesteaded in the years following the War of the Rebellion - mainly by Union Army veterans. As a consequence, there is little government-owned land left around here. Nothing for a group like APR to build upon.

People do look out for others in small towns, kinda. I lived in a slightly bigger town in Montana and, well people look out for y’a, but they’re also all up in your business, and the gossip is outta control. And seems like ppl want to let you know that they know wtf you’re doing. Like every day someone would say, « hey I saw you walking your dog by the river », or, « I saw you going to the grocery store » or whatever. I could never live in one of these places again. And in winter, unless you play in a darts league, or shoot pool, or go to bible class, there’s nothing to do. There ain’t any skiing or anything in eastern Montana…just cold and wind

When folks talk about low crime rates, are they forgetting the high levels of drug and alcohol addiction and related crimes? I would also guess domestic violence rates are high. Living in Wyoming for most my life, I did spend 3 years in MT. I used to always say that out West, you probably won't be assaulted or murdered by a stranger, it's your family and friends who do that.

I'll gladly take the "drama" of small town Montana vs the drama of any of the bigger cities such as Chicago, Baltimore, Philadelphia, San Francisco, St. Louis, Portland, Seattle, Oakland, etc. Very few riots (or "peaceful protests" as cnn would call them), lower overall violent crime, no open-air drug dens or homeless encampments along the sidewalks, and you can park your car without fearing that someone is simply going to smash your windows to get whatever you happen to have in your car with no repercussions for the criminals. Try having such peace of mind parking your car or simply walking down the street in a place like San Francisco.

Go to Montana in during the first two weeks of January. Same with Wyoming (outside the rich northwest). Have a drink or two in an almost vacant bar and talk to the barkeep. Go to the local breakfast spot when it's -30 C. You'll start to understand the place- why it is so unique. Same applies to Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba. Paradise during the short summer, brutal in the winter, sometimes there's no spring...
