Nick, FYI, Mt Mackinley was not the original name of the mountain. It never was. You said "it used to be called Mt Mackinley. No it wasn't. Alaska was and still is inhabited by indigenous people, who for centuries named it "Denali". The Kuyukon people referred it as Denali until some white foreign gold prospector changed to Mt Mackinley ( former US president) without taking to account the history and culture of the mountain.

Been in interior Alaska for 23 years. Grew up in Arizona. Alaska is tough. But worth it. Am I tired of the 9 month long winters of snow and ice and darkness? Uhhh sure. Am I ready to live on some tropical oasis?? Uhhh of course. Am I proud to be an Alaskan? Definitely. Have I lived in a cabin with no heat all winter long at -65 indoors and out? Yes, I have. Have I encountered Grizzlies? Yes, of course. Did I have dogs sleep with me and save me from vears and break through ice trying to get to me and eat out of my mouth so carefully not to bite my lips? Yes to all those. Have I got frostbit? Yeah. Have I ran a dog sled? Yes. Have I been in car accidents because of the icy roads? Yes. Have I burned firewood countless years as only heat source? Yes.....have I raised a son through it all? Yesss! Would I trade it in for 23 years of simple living somewhere else? Not a chance.

TTundergrizzly you probably eat nails for breakfast... without any milk and I’d bet even a hearty breakfast of nails would run your wallets stomach pretty empty. All jokes aside you’ve really lived/are living a full life there’s a lot too say about that especially now, simplicity can go so far instead of the question being “what’s going too entertain me today” to “what will I eat/survive today” puts things into perspective real quick, it’s good too hear that Alaskans, who are still Americans, are keeping the American independence mentality alive, just like Nick said.

Its just such a gorgeous place, especially the Aurora Borealis which was part of the many natural beauties of Alaska. Then I came back to visit via the 12 days cruise to Alaska/Canada on the Grand Princess Cruise ship in August 2018. Reconnected with friends and toured with nostalgia.

My wife and I are recently retired living in southern California. We took an Alaska cruise last year. I realize we didn't even scratch the surface when it comes to seeing Alaska. If we didn't have such deep roots here in SoCal, we'd be very tempted to move to a place like Juneau. We saw more "eye candy" in that one Alaska cruise than we saw in the previous 3 cruises to the Caribbean. The glaciers, the whales, and the eagles were just beauty to behold.

If you want to move to Alaska, like nick says, you need to have a plan. In other words, you need to be hired by a company up here before coming here to Alaska. You may also want to have a portable translator with you that can help you communicate with the locals. Yes I am currently working here in Alaska in the seafood industry out in the aleutian islands. Housing and food is provided by the company. So its easy to save up your money here. There are lots of eastern europeans here I work along side with, like Serbians, Macedonians, Ukrainians, etc. And yes 80% of Alaska is only accessible by plane or boat. Most of the islands out here has no alcohol available. Or there is, but you would have to buy the stuff underground in the black market, which means having to know someone, and it can cost hundreds of dollars for even a small pint of whiskey, so there is really no point. But overall I have found Alaska, to be very gorgeous and peaceful.

Did you know that most of the shows we see on Discovery and National Geographic are filmed in Alaska. And gold mining is also a big business for Alaska too.
@michaelcaprio3113 жыл бұрын
I sure hope that whatever mining companies that do end up excavating the land they put it back just how they found it, working with nature instead of against her could be life or death/make a huge difference in curving climate change. By the way Great Big Stories (which unfortunately the channel shut down, but has its videos still posted) in the town of UnAlaska, Alaska there’s a bald eagle problem and they eat the fish when the fishing boats come from a haul, harass U.S. postal workers, people trying to go to the U.S. Post Office, and hang out mostly at the dumpster. I understand that Alaska/any other state/company’s/corporations need revenue too stay alive BUT all that I’m saying is everyone should respect the land/nature and then use the land as needed, as an example on Discovery’s Gold Rush series yes the rag tag of miners/machine operators would work there asses off but would get 2 jars of gold and the land would be gutted. My point being We have 1 planet let’s take care of Earth because Earth is all We have despite what we’re told about Mars/the moon. Also We must confront our problems and not let them fester becoming worse over time and profit/benefit from the problems just look at the homelessness/opioid/heroine/mental health/class warfare problems they must be solved not ignored at. Btw I’m from the Midwest specifically the Chicagoland area.

Yaaaa... I was born and raised in wasilla. My father worked on the oil field for about 40 years. I grew up outside and everything we ate we either caught, groove for killed. I grew up on snow machines, schemes and sleds oh really trips out in the mountains where we would go moose, chief, caribou, and bear hunting. Is that it has a blend of liberalism and conservatism that work very well together. You have seen more empathetic virtues available where we say people deserve healthcare and an education and so we invest the money and schools, colleges, and healthcare. Not to mention infrastructure. When we take the hyper focus on work ethic and individualism from conservatism, and we use that to solve problems. We work hard to make sure that people are educated and those who need to have things that they can't afford or are unable to provide for themselves, available to them. It's not that the rest of the country is entitled and expecting things to be given to them, because we don't want to go down. Alaska has a very high rate of crime, alcoholism, drug, and homelessness. In fact, Alaska accepted the Medicaid expansion of the affordable health Care act otherwise known as ObamaCare. People in Alaska like to think they're independent from one another, and that they don't rely on anyone or anything else except themselves, except the fact that for a long time there were no taxes and even now they're very low. The permanent didn't comes in super handy for people who have a family with several kids. That's often over $10,000 right there every year. Not to mention they have a higher wage than most areas. It's not so much that people work harder in alaska, it's just that they have more opportunities to work hard. They're hard work yields better results than other places that I've been to. I live here in northeastern Oklahoma and as quiet as it is. It's slow and we work very hard for very little money. The minimum wage here is $7.25 an hour, and if you can find a job that pays $9 an hour you're considered rich lol. My point is that alaskans are just as dependent on things as other people are in the country.

The Northern lights are the most beautiful thing you will ever see btw, totally worth it.

Haha loved the video. Born and raised in Palmer. And yes don't leave home without out a gun...or two... Damn bears and tweakers. Alaska is awesome but limited on non outdoor activities. Omg haven't seen that mattress ranch video in a grip.

5 things I think about Alaska. 1. Balto "The Best Childhood Movie Ever" It isn't even a Disney movie either. (SUCK IT DISNEY) 2. Inuit vs. Aleut. Battle between two Native American Tribes 3. Arctic Circle/Arctic Ocean 4. Moose/Bear/Salmon/Elk/Deer/ 5. Sarah Palin

AK is a great place to visit, but would not want to live there year round. I have visited twice in the summer, saw so much incredible wilderness, learned to love salmon at my first salmon bake in AK. Beautiful country, but I could not take the long, cold, and dark winters.

There are more Weed Stores than Liquor Stores here. It's also the Smell of Alaska now. Also residents can dip there nets into the water and pull out a lot of Salmon or just go combat fishing on the Russian. Been here for more than 35 years and not planning on leaving. Oh I also have a pilots license lol and have picked up some Gold off the beaches. Thanks for the video.

My grandson lives there. I want to go visit so bad. It's already snowing a little where they are. I'm in NW Indiana and it's still pretty nice here. They don't have a very long summer. They really enjoy it and do lots of outdoor activities when it's nice. It looks so beautiful.

What advice would you give to a very young, newly married couple that has the idea of moving there and living outside of Fairbanks in a smaller town? No job offer and a kind of figure it out after we get there attitude. Asking for a concerned father friend of mine.
