Life is simple. Better. Daughter’s a techie. She was leery about taking transfer - 15 yrs ago - from SoCal to SLC. She & husband loved Bountiful, UT. Utahn here! 👋 Born in Glendale, raised in West Valley. At ~25 I moved to Midvale. I’ve now lived in Missouri for almost 6 months. Utah is absolutely amazing. West Valley crime can suck. But it definitely isn’t terrible. I’ve been on almost all sides of Utah. When I was homeless, I was always so surprised by how many people were willing to make small acts of kindness. The laws determined by the church are definitely the most annoying thing. Rent is high, house prices are high, but the pay is pretty decent in most places, & the organization of the state makes it almost all okay. I wish more states would adapt the same “road organization” Utah has.

Lived here for nearly 50 years. It has changed and evolved over time. Most Utahns are adverse to the constant migration of people transplanting here from other states. The quality of life has diminished as a result. Housing, food and other prices have escalated while the wages have remained low. Crime has definitely increased and downtown Salt Lake was once a safe place to be in the evening if you were alone. That’s no longer the case. The temple is NOT a church. I laughed at your comment about how people from Utah complain a lot. That statement is completely true! I manage an apartment building in Seattle and had multiple residents relocate from Utah which was a complete nightmare. They moved to Seattle for a Church group and immediately started complaining about everything and their neighbors. Seeing them transition into a large city like Seattle was a bit entertaining. They started changing their tune and realized that living in a big city has a lot of variables that are not in your control. This goes the same for residents from Idaho. Awesome video, Nick 9:00 when you talk about the Mormons, they're led by both the conferences up at the Salt Lake temple and tabernacle, but also by BYU in Provo, which trains missionaries and is one of the leading language schools in the country where they offer many world languages. There is also a BYU campus in Idaho. 14:00 one of the reason the problem with homelessness is rising is partially because there is a large wage gap in the state. Apartments start around $800 a month, but the minimum wage there is still the federal rate, so many entry-level jobs only pay between $8-10 an hour.

A very overlooked and forgotten movie called Promised Land that came out in 1987 showed a realistic Utah life about small-town high schoolers. One of the main characters lived in a 1950’s home, dropped out of high school and ran away and had bleak, undemonstrative, and passive parents that were hardly surprised and impressed when he came back home to them a year later after running away, but just sat down with his new wild bride to a simple dinner on Christmas Eve with a tuna and potato casserole dish with applesauce.

To add a little history as well for the northwestern area of UT, most notably Box Elder county, it was the final location to merge the Transcontinental Railroad of the late 1800s in the town of Promontory, which has a museum dedicated to it.

I was born and raised in Central Utah. In fact my hometown Mt. Pleasant, is nicknamed "Hub City" because it's the exact center of Utah. It's a beautiful rural community along highway 89 at the base of the Manti LaSal mountains. Now I live in Northeast Utah in Coalville. A small town just outside Park City. It's nice here too. Mormonism isn't as big of deal anymore. I think us non-mormons are finally the majority.

Fun fact: So the big building in the beginning of the video is actually not a church building. It is a temple, specifically, the Salt Lake temple. It took 40 years to build. Fun fact #2: Although it's true that only members with temple recommends can attend the temple, when a new temple is built, or one is being renovated, they will allow the public to go inside and walk through before they are dedicated. Fun fact #3: Lime jello with shredded carrots and some sweet cream cheese type of stuff is nasty, but my mom loves it. I'll eat the jello, but spit out the carrots. Vegetables do not belong in jello.
@NickJohnson3 жыл бұрын
I would just make jello without stuff in it. And jello needs an emoji

Pretty darn accurate for someone that doesn't live in Utah! Best thing about the State is the Nature, so hopefully we dont ruin it with overcrowding! It's also getting really expensive fast. So yeah, dont move to Utah if you're not able to pay a premium. For me its worth it for the four beautiful seasons, the skiing, hiking, national parks, fall leaves....those things are what keep me here.

Living in Utah is wonderful for people like me. By “people like me” I mean people who enjoy, with unbridled enthusiasm, a cosmopolitan mix of available outdoor activities (not to mention the growing cosmopolitan vibrancy of certain Utah cities). For me, skiing is intoxicating for its mountainous, wintry grandeur coupled with its gravity driven exhilaration. From where I live I am an hour or less from multiple world class ski venues, the vast majority of which are also available to snowboarders enamored of the same excellent virtues. Our mountains are positively exquisite aesthetically and afford people truly marvelous year round experiences. Then there is the red rock country - as alive with incomparable beauty as it is with, in many places, the stirring footprints of ancient peoples and other prehistoric life. The richness of Utah’s outdoor variety is, if not entirely unique, among exceedingly few comparable places. To my way of thinking the cons are political. Although in a technical sense The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is a religion, its pervasive dominance subjects the population at large to its strictures as if it were also the state’s dominant political party (which I’d say it is). Utah is politically conservative in the extreme, a quality that threatens some of the things that make Utah wonderful. Witness the antipathy that encouraged Donald Trump to (try to - that story isn’t over yet) dramatically shrink Bears Ears and Grand Escalante Staircase, opening irreplaceable natural treasures to the ravages of coal and uranium mining. The state is aggressively one-party conservative, even though the population in general has substantially more moderate, even progressive elements. Still, our anti-regulation, pro-business political dominance contributes to poisonous Salt Lake Valley air, a related appetite to enlarge motor vehicle access everywhere, and a strong social subtext attributing the privations of our state’s less fortunate to their own lack of moral fiber/self-indulgent unwillingness to better themselves. It is possible that the time may come when I find the cons overwhelming the pros, but ongoing shifts in the state’s population make me optimistic that opposite tendencies will ultimately prevail here. For now and the foreseeable future, I’m staying put.
