I suggest that you get several packets if Lupin seeds and plant where they get at least a partial shade, and not where it gets real hot. These are absolutely gorgeous in mass, not paced in a row. A perennial that will reseed - so don't go about digging around the area and only pull weeds when they are young.

Excellent video sir 👍 If I were to sow some seeds in early July is it best to plant them into position when they have grown large enough or keep them in pots over winter?
@LearnHow23 ай бұрын
Once established outside they can be left year after year. For new young plants I would play it safe and keep them protected over winter then plant out early spring.

Hi Angela. They should be ok in sunlight now - especially as it is not very strong at this time of year.

Thankyou for the video. Can I ask - will these grow year after year? Do you cut them back or do you pull them up once they've finished flowering? Sorry - new to lupins!
@LearnHow2 Жыл бұрын
Yes they will come back each year. I leave mine in the ground over winter. They die off then new shoots appear in the spring.

So if I start on Feb 3rd, will they flower this summer? Also can I keep them in pots? If I plant in the ground, the rabbits eat them same day. Then voles will eat the roots in the winter. It's been frustrating. I do love lupine though. I hope pots are ok as they'll be high on a wall away from critters.
@ladhernaTG Жыл бұрын
Lupins prefer to be on the ground, but you can plant them in pots too. It's recommended that they are deep, well draining pots, and ideally have 3-5 plants per pot (they like being together apparently!)

I live in Thailand and there is only 3 seasons here, wet, hot and hotter. It is now August so I am going to start the seeds now as it is the start of the rainy season so by the time the seeds have developed it should be near the hot season. I have also got Foxgloves, Gladiolus, Dahlias and quite a few more types of seeds so lots of challenges for me. I am open for advice. I had no problems growing plants in the UK.

@@LearnHow2 Thank you for your reply. I have been working and being interested in planting and landscapes for the past 50yrs from when I was a young British soldier in Germany to working with the environment agency in England. This lead me to go to University in Leeds getting a BA with honours and a graduate diploma in landscape architecture. I moved to Thailand 11yrs ago met my Thai wife and we have travelled around Thailand due to me working in various schools as an English teacher. I found that each area where I travelled each has its own native plants that cannot be intermingled around Thailand from Pattaya to Chang Mai to now where I live Korat (Nakorn Ratchasima). I bought these seeds and bulbs in Thailand from Lazada a Thai shopping agency as opposed to transport them in from another country that may require permits. It is going to be a challenging time for me to create a Thai English country garden under these weather conditions. The area where I live it is salty and in parts sandy so a greater challenge.

Mine seem to be growing so slowly. Perhaps I didn't sow them early enough. Next year I'll follow your tips and this from the RHS website: "Sow seeds in early to mid-spring. The large seeds have a tough coating, so it is best to nick them with a knife, then soak them in water for 24 hours before sowing. They should germinate in 10-14 days at 10-15°C (50-59°F)"

Hi Rhiannon. Thanks for that advice. Good luck with your growing and keep safe.

Some experts say you have to scarify the seeds between two sheets of newspaper or keep them in a cold area (fridge) for a few weeks to weaken the hard shell.
