Wow, I've been a pilot since 1968 and by the time I finished my 20 year military retirement had been qualified in every Bell helicopter. Then I worked for Bell for 20 years and was there when the 505 was conceived. The difference between the Long Ranger and this is amazing. It just missing autopilot. I would love to be able to afford my own. Nice video. I'll bet she's an IP.

Great video Nick. I follow mostly for Porsche content ... but I spent hundreds of hours in 206s as a geologist passenger earlier in my energy career. Most of that was mountain flying in Western Canada, often slinging loads ... so diapers would have been handy on more than a few occasions. Apart from the avionics, I’m struck by the simplicity of the 505; however I don’t recall any correcting ballast/CG/vibration add-ons on the earlier JetRangers ... which makes me wonder about the inherent weight-penalties on the 505 vs a clean-sheet design? Glad though to see a Canadian-made aerospace product profiled.

Career long Bell guy, great equipment and great company. Clearly the best choice between the 505 and the R66 is the Bell. My biggest question is if you don’t have any manual control of the throttle how do you adjust torque/power during a stuck pedal E.P.?
@thicjim78122 жыл бұрын
Basically flip off to engine failure in the hover. Stuck left shouldn't need throttle input just takes time to lose the altitude. Stuck right find the airspeed that keeps the nose straight or slightly left and bring the helicopter in at a normal decent for landing, when at a safe atlitude for engine failure in the hover gently flair the helicopter and add collective. When the helicopter begins to yaw flip the switch from flight to idle and treat as engine failure in the hover

Beautiful helicopter! Just missing a chin bubble window with a mirror to watch the placement of skids during “bush landings”! Another item to note is that the fuel cap is located on the passenger side of the aircraft which had never made sense. During refueling operations, particularly “hot fueling”, it’s always best to have the refueling personnel and fuel cap in sight of the pilot to ensure fuel cap is on, and fuel door is latched. Wish the Bell engineering team would’ve consulted with operational pilots who land in unprepared landing areas during crew moves/ firefighting operations during the designing process!👍🏻

A departure from the usual Bell model numbers. Usually the first number was the m/r blade count and the middle number 0 or 1 would mean single engine and a 2 would mean twin engine. (ex a 429 is a 4-bladed twin). It is my understanding the "505" means 505 shp. This is a really fine machine. Congratulations Bell!!!

@mntbighker3 жыл бұрын
Having seen other 505 demo vids, one of the most impressive differences you guys missed... If you had landed off site and shut down, the 505 can be restarted basically instantly. On older models there is quite a wait involved before a restart is allowed. Or you risk damage to the turbine. The guys at the flight school seemed really impressed by this improvement over something like a 206 or an R66. And of course the cool down before shutdown is also very quick. Love your aviation tubes Nick.
@matttartal7637 Жыл бұрын
Great points! Love the fact that there’s only a 30 second cool down prior to shutting down! What I can say about the 206 is that you can restart the aircraft right after shutdown without damaging the engine by engaging the starter until the TOT is below 150*C prior to reintroducing fuel. You will still be within your starter engagement time limits and within your TOT limits during the start up procedure. Particularly if your blades are still turning after initial shutdown, their is reduced strain on the starter when conducting another startup! The only thing missing from this beautiful 505 is a chin bubble with a mirror to watch the skids below when landing in unprepared (Bush) landing zones, conducting toe-ins, hover exit operations, one skid placement for hover exiting, etc.

Great glass instrumentation, outstanding visibility, FADEC does a lot of the work, smooth ride, 20-30 second cool-down compared to a 2 minute cool-down in the 206 series... there's a lot to love about this machine, including it's modest price. It won't win a beauty contest, not that it should matter, but yeah, it kind of does... but Bell is going to sell a lot of these, for good reason.
