I understand that some people aren't so keen on their overall sound during this period. But for me, this album and Hold Your Fire, were one of their pinnacles from a song-writing perspective. They were majestic during this period.

It's all good but from a musical standpoint it's a lessening of Alex's presence during this period. We all like different things but the music is just more formulaic. It's the type of stuff they refused to do when they made 2112.

@@charleswagner2984 Oh yes! 'Hold Your Fire' is a phenomenal release as well! I absolutely LOVE the way the band used synths and other electronic effects to embellish the music, and convey emotion at just the right time in the songs! I know I was one of the ones that commented about thinking it was the song Marathon, when you titled the video with Marathon a while ago. So glad you got around to doing the actual song. Certainly a top 5 Rush song for me, and Power Windows is a top 3 Rush album for me. Absolutely love this album. I know you don't focus on the lyrics much, especially on a first time listen, but the message of the lyrics, combined with the outstanding, uplifting music is the reason this is a favorite song of mine. I HIGHLY recommend you give it another listen, focusing on the lyrics, and the message of the song.

Hi Guys, Well all I can say about Lex's response is, it basically discribes the entire album. It's an incredible album. I have it on vinyl when it 1st came out. I got it again on cd. I even made a copy of it on a cassette tape during the 80's and played on my walkman when I was out walking anywhere. Rush just hits the spot every time, and every track has an "amazing" chorus ! Great to see you Lex 😀👍 and wishing you well. I know what it's like to suffer from back pain. Take care. Great reaction, thankyou. Jim X

FYI, I just heard Geddy Lee is doing a tour of smallish concert venues starting in November. It is called the "Geddy Lee - My Effin' Life" Conversation Book Tour. I don't know if it will be Geddy just talking about his life or if it will also include music. I picked up 2 tix for the November 18th show at the Orpheum Theatre in Boston. He is performing in Denver on Nov 30 at the Paramount Theatre. He's hitting quite a few cities in the US, Canada, and the UK.

@@mvunit3 Yes painting will take time, but in this case some of the photographed album covers that Syme did with Rush must have been much more time consuming. I mean designing the concept, finding a location, designing a set, building the set, lighting it, hiring models & sometimes animals to perform in it, photographing it and finally editing it on the computer. I bet that takes more time and money than doing a painting. But I don't know, maybe Rush's preference was in the more photorealistic style or something.

When Geddy brought in the massive wall of synth sound to these 80's albums, it completely transformed their sound & I absolutely fell in love with the change. It really elevated them from a progressive rock band to brilliant synth infused new wave rock to my ears. It really was so different to anything I had ever heard. Power Windows is one of my favourite Rush albums but I could say the same for Hold Your Fire, which was also a beautiful synth fueled album These 80's Rush albums are rarely reacted to but they are absolutely their best work imo. You must check out the rest of Power Windows & Hold Your Fire.

Power Windows for me is the best overall Rush record. Lyrics, songwriting, playing, it's all at or very close to career peak on this record. (I think Presto is the actual peak of the lyrics, but this one and HYF are strong there too). I like Hold Your Fire more than most, but it's way down from the peak established on Power Windows. (A similar thing happened in the 90s where Counterparts was as good as 90s Rush gets and then Test For Echo fell off a cliff).

@@ischmidt Yeah, I agree. 80's Rush is just choc full of beautiful ambient compositions and they produced such a great fusion of drum, guitar, bass & synth. I can't think of any other band at the time that put it all together quite like Rush in the 80's. The turning point I'm thinking was probably Signals, where we see this huge sonic wall of synth, backed up by everything else. Power Windows is a great example of this but I would also put Hold Your Fire up there with instant killer tracks as Force 10, Mission & Time Stand Still.

According to Alex Lifeson, Rush wanted to combine the strongest elements from 1982’s Signals and 1984’s Grace Under Pressure and use them for Power Windows. For him, this was one of the most cohesive and satisfying recordings he and his bandmates ever put together ... According to Peart, Power Windows may have seemed to be a simpler album but it was actually just as difficult to compose and perform as any other ... Power Windows featured elements of musical material Rush never used before, allowing them to break several boundaries as recording artists. This was the album that Rush agreed to not hold any of their creativity back. - excerpts from Classic Rock History Geddy: "Power Windows was a high note. That was a great record."

I saw this show and GUP, and every show following it, 24 shows in total, and each was soaring. @@kbrewski1 - 'Grace Under Pressure' and 'Power Windows' were the first Rush albums I heard (in '89) and I'm glad it was those ones; I'm not sure if 70's Rush with Geddy's piercing vocal style would've gotten me hooked to them straight away like that. I also reckon their vocal melodies were becoming way better from that point onwards, whereas they'd often just followed the root notes and/or riffs in many of the songs on their previous albums. I do like their older material, but 'Permanent Waves' through to 'Counterparts' are their best albums, in my book, and 'Jacob's Ladder' through to 'Freewill' on 'Exit...Stage Left' are my most-favourite Rush recordings of them all 😊

So pleased you shared this with Lex. Love this album but this along with Manhattan Project really stand out. The bass is insane and the keys work so well not cheesy syths. Listening to the whole album in one go is a challenge as it’s so clinically produced so glad you did not do the whole thing. Love to Lex and her back what a trooper x

Yeah, almost every song on the post-Terry-Brown albums sounds better live. This album would probably be my second favorite Rush album if not for the production.

I bought this album, and played along, and simply knew where it was going. RUSH has music theory down. They always have a bridge in the middle, where Alex goes crazy, and Geddy and Neil seal the deal.

Such a great album. During that "amazing';) guitar solo, Neil was going off in the background as well. Throw in Geddy's bass riff throughout and they all shine. Delicious!

With 'Oppenheimer' being big at the box office still, 'Manhattan Project' from this album is extremely timely. It tackles very similar themes to the movie in a song structure - and it has a vocal break in the final verse that makes your hairs stand up. My favourite track on Power Windows.

John Taylor of Duran-Duran taught Geddy how to slap-bass and Geddy ran with it. Check out Duran-Duran's song, Rio and you can hear the similarities.

This whole album is great. For being pushed back guitar wise, Alex comes up with some amazing guitar parts...

Some of Alex’s greatest solos are on this record IMO…. Marathon and Emotion Detector come to mind. Emotion Detector is so under-appreciated.

@@markyrogers2466 I did not make it to a show until the Presto tour - then didn't miss one until R40 when they skipped Pittsburgh for the first time since Neil's first show with the boys here in Pittsburgh.
