Finally someone I can agree with pertaining to this song. It’s not “better” than the live version, I like to say it’s more refined. Especially, since Freddie is the only singer. I concur with your choice.

@@toddmathers5075 I kind of agree with you. This album was the beginning of their downslide. Their lyrics were becoming trite, but the music quality was just as good as always.Queen's worst is better than most bands' best. "Dead on Time" is one of my favorites.

As a Queen fan since 1986, I must inform anyone who listen to one, two, or three songs of Queen then think can figure out Queen's music. It happened to me. Normally one perceives Queen as a prog-classic rock due to Bohemian Rhapsody. But the perception will disrupt when listen to surprising simple n soft like Dear Friend, Nevermore, Lily of the Valley, 39, or Lazing on Sunday Afternoon. It doesn't stop there, even there are a few Caribbean vibe like Who Needs You, Misfire, Rain Must Fall. While not losing roughness of playing hard n raw like Dragon Attack, Stone Cold Crazy, Sheer Heart Attack, Walkin' on the Sidewalk, Hammer to Fall, Tear it Up. Yet surprisingly also playing kind of dance music like Staying Power, Back Chat, Radio Gaga, I want to break free. Queen is like music dept store. They provide all music they can play and the best they can prepared.

This album marked the end of Queen's early "classical" period. After this album, they seriously streamlined their sound towards the late 70s. If you love this song, explore their first 5 albums, nice pick!

The best songs of Queen are the songs which are rather unknown to none Queen fans! I mean those songs which aren't aired on tv and radio, which aren't on the Greatest Hits (1-3) compilations, as those songs which are only "radio-friendly" singles. You can dig deep and find a ton of masterpices - one better than the other and very, very different from everything that you heard from Queen before. They did almost every genre in fantastic quality - absolutly stunning perfection. And with "every genre" I mean: blues, glam rock, psychedelic rock, hard rock, progressive rock, punk rock, heavy metal, pop, rhythm 'n blues, funk, disco, country, gospel, soul, opera and even music-hall and ragtime, etc.! Or as I like to say: "Queen is a genre of its own!" :)

Been a fan of Queen since being a child in the 70s, and this is one of my favorite songs! Another prog masterpiece from this album is The Prophet's Song. Another gem from Queen that was never too popular and is just a completely different style is Cool Cat from Hot Space, it's full funky composed by John and Freddie, sadly Brian and Roger didn't want to be part of it which goes to show Queen's plasticity and composing talent.

I appreciate the hidden gems like this. If you find a video of people dancing the waltz, silence the music, play this song while they go 'round & 'round. It works. 123 123 :) Freddie's vocals are light & sweet. Roger's drumming is so much fun. John's bass line is spot on! Brian's a master rock guitarist, however I think it really shows him off when he easy slips into these other genres with so much brilliant talent. More different styles? "Lily of The Valley", "Dear Friends", "Good Company", "Dreamers Ball", "My Melancholy Blues", "Seaside Rendevous", "Lazing On a Sunday Afternoon", and so much more.

If you've only ever listened to mainly Queens greatest hits then you are in for a big big treat if you listen to Queens full albums starting with their first "Queen" you won't be disappointed. “Hard Core” Queen fans will tell you that Queen’s BEST material is in their Deep Cuts, album songs that were never released as singles/were never on The Charts. Some of these were played regularly at their concerts/became show favorites with audiences. P.S. The BoRhap movie’s nice, but IS full of inaccuracies (creative license, I guess). Freddie was actually already a friend. He’d hang out at Smile’s shows/give them advice on how to improve! When Tim Staffel quit, Brian said in an interview that he & Roger were ready to call it quits… Then Fred said “Try one more time, with me.” Roger said when they first heard Fred sing, Rog thought Fred “sounded like a billie goat” (because he hadn’t figured out how to control his vibrato yet). FYI, there are several really GOOD - free - documentaries on Queen/Freddie, here on YT.

I bought that stuff in the mid seventies. I was a teen then. Queen and a few other bands were our rock/pop/progrock pantheon. My generation was a little mad at Queen when their simple pop-albums came out in the 80ies ... especially after they did quite a few sensational albums in the 70ies. But even later they did a couple great albums: A KIND OF MAGIC and INNUENDO stand out.

The problem with Greatest Hits albums is they are just that, the singles, or hits. Unless you are into a band big time you don't get to hear deep cuts from the albums like this one. Well done for reacting to this! It was written by Freddie Mercury & positively oozes with his flamboyance. I used to be into Queen big time & the first gig I ever went to was Queen the "A Day at the Races" tour, in Southampton, The UK, in 1977. I was only 14 at the time (I'm 60 now) & it is still one of the best concerts I've been to! Brian May, a self confessed rocker, tends to write the heavier stuff. I know you don't react to requests from the comments but, treat yourselves to a listen to "White Man" from this same album. Written by Brian May, it really rocks & you'llthank me later!

The irony is that queen had to (or felt they had to) become more “boring” in order to remain commercial as the late 70s rendered anything perceived as remotely “prog” extremely uncool. Had they continued to make music of this complexity, radio would have abandoned them, they would have sunk into obscurity, and you probably wouldn’t be discovering their earlier work now. That said, and as much as I enjoy their simple, straight-forward pop song period, I agree that this earlier period is Queen at its best.

John Deacon on bass, everyone! As for prog, check out the album Queen II. In fact, if you are lukewarm or indifferent to their hits (and I love all of Queen’s output with Freddie), try the first three albums for hard rock and prog.

Just seen this , bit late to the party on this first time, definitely more “non commercial” Queen , check out My Fairy King & Jesus from Queen 1 , Fairy Tellers Master stroke/Nevermore (must be played back to back) Dragon Attack - The Game, Mustapha -Jazz , Tenement Funster/Flick of the wrist/ Lily of the valley -Sheer Heart Attack ( again played as one) all classics but you will never find on any Greatest hits compilation. You will wish you had listened to Queen bit like Steely Dan 😊

I vote for any version of "You Take My Breath Away"....it will knock your socks off... also "My Melancholy Blues",...and "Mustafa" for lots of contrast! You will love them!

That is why you need to go through deep cuts. You will run across so many hidden gems that you never have heard of before. This was on f their masterpieces. Might want to give a listen to March of the Black Queen. You both really need to listen to Queen 11.
