Well, this is serendipitous. It’s such a massive thumping slab of pop. The brilliant Nile Rogers on production and Stevie Ray Vaughan, then unknown, on guitar. This version, with the trumpet, isn’t the radio release, but it’s the version I have always loved. Massive thanks ❤ And congratulations 🎉 The album also has Cat People. So so good 😎

David Bowie and his music was and is still such a huge part of our music culture, so many of us grew up listening to and enjoying David Bowies music, my first David Bowie experience is with the album Young Americans and the song Fame, John Lennon co-wrote and sang backup to the song, along with James Brown's guitar player Carlos Alomar, still one of my favorite songs

My first big arena show was Bowie in '83. Then the Police, Billy Joel, Springsteen, and Prince by early '85. By then I was getting deep into the alt/punk/grunge scene. 14yo-16yo me had a lot of mainstream experiences.

I'm a little late, but a very hearty congratulations to the both of you on reaching 100k here in KZbin, well-deserved! 👏👏👏 Out of the many music reaction channels here, you two provide what I would consider a unique and in-depth prospective on matters, all the while remaining both honest and pleasant. Thanks for all the work you guys put out here, you've brought joy and entertainment to thousands of people over the years. Whatever your future goals are, I wish you two nothing but the best.

Nice video Nick. Bowie is my all-time favorite artist, and has been for nearly 50 years. I first heard this song the day the album was released in 1983. Much of the credit for the sound on this song and this album is due to Bowie's hiring of Nile Rodgers to produce. He brought a pop/dance mentality to the production that made this one of Bowie's biggest selling albums of all time. I saw Bowie 5 times, including twice on this tour. He was always the consummate professional and showman, providing a memorable performance each time. Thanks for revisiting this song.

Heard this when it came out in 83. I was 14, so it made Bowie accessible to an 80s pop-centric kid. I also saw Labyrinth in the theater in 86! I still can hear “Smell Bad!!!” in my head to this day! 😂

When they started playing singles from this album on the radio, (China Girl, Cat people (Putting out Fire), and this one), I thought that Bowie had somehow got Albert King to play on the album. There are certain trademark Albert licks that Stevie used frequently, like making phrases by bending and partially releasing one or 2 strings to differing degrees. See Albert and Stevie Ray together on the 1983 TV show In Session.

One of those albums that was derided as too “commercial,” whatever that means, compared to his previous output. But became a classic anyway. Kind of like Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours.

Bowie at his most commercial is still Bowie, so remains very good indeed. I like all eras of his career because his take on different styles is always worth hearing. He kept on moving and learning and playing with things, it's not his fault that each new direction left different people behind each time, it's the nature of the beast. I reckon the main reason Earthling wasn't more popular is purely because it was lots of drum & bass, not because of any quality issues.

A good album in my opinion although fans of the early work are less favorable. I never got to see Bowie live but I’ve seen Stevie Ray many times. Especially before he got big I saw him many times in Texas in bars and small venues. He was really good with the female singer Lou Ann Barton and C.W. Clark In Triple Threat later named Double Trouble. Nick I always love your observations thanks for the rocking reaction.

For Bowie soul and funk: Try cuts from Bowie's Young Americans album with Luther Vandross back-up singers to die for and David Sanborn on killer alto saxophone, like Somebody Up There Likes Me, Win, Fascination, Right and Can You Hear Me. [Luther and David both on Dick Cavett talk-show video.clip..and Bowie did Fame and Golden Years singles on Soul Train clip] ...Also guitarist Carlos Alomar funk on Secret Life of Arabia (Heroes album). … Sample his Let’s Dance album produced by Chic’s Nile Rogers (and it’s all good!). From Station to Station album: Stay. Also Black Tie, White Noise with Al B. Sure.…Tonight with Tina Turner (also with him in one of her concert videos)... Knock on Wood (David Live, 1975). “1984” (from Diamond Dogs album. Sounds like “Shaft.” Recorded by Bowie, later by Tina Turner) A friend of the Black community - complained to MTV about Black videos being relegated to early morning broadcasts. Married to Somali super-model Iman.

If you want to dismiss the song as too pop or commercial, which is just being a hipster hater anyway, then you probably only really know the single version. All the other instruments/sounds you're hearing, along with the totality of Vaughn's guitar work, are what are on the full version. The album version is like 3 1/2 minutes more of all that.

I still find "Let's Dance" to be very good, but not great. It's maybe one song away. Some weak tracks hurt it for me, but it's not the tracks so many of the 'too cool for school' types who only listen to 'serious' music or message rock (and 1st gen punk, which is always considered so full of 'integrity' and the 'essence of rock n' roll' or whatever) dislike/hate. Friends of mine & those like them didn't like anything dance-oriented. They claimed it was shallow pandering. But it was really cuz they were too uptight/hung up to dance in front of other ppl. Soooo many of those ppl only know the single version of this song.
