A common trope, especially in Westerns, is that vultures will circle high in the air over someone who's dying (like in a desert from thirst), and will even land and hop closer when death is imminent. The bird here is indicating that the man on the radio is either wrong or straight-out lying when saying they're likely to survive this.

The lady with the coffee and the internal voice is an actress who was in a rather famous coffee commercial at the time of the film's release. And his wife just has this internal voice that says, "That's funny, Jim never has a second cup of coffee at home!" The best part about the lady who "speaks jive" is that it's played by Barbara Billingsley aka June Cleaver from the 1950s sitcom "Leave It To Beaver". June Cleaver is pretty much synonymous with the ultimate suburban housewife/mother (very "square" as they would say in the '70s). So, having her be the one to slide right into urban "jive" speak just makes that bit even more hilariously awesome.

The scene where the doctor is giving the pep talk telling him about George Zipp. That is an adaptation of coach Knute Rockney's inspirational speech to Notre Dame's football team before their game with Army in 1928. In this film as the pilot, was returning to the cockpit ,the Notre Dame fight song is playing in the background.

This film is a parody of several disaster films and war films. The film drama "Airport " is frequently referenced in this parody. The beach scene is a parody of "From Here to Eternity, " starring Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr. The girl saying goodbye to her soldier boyfriend is set up like a train leaving the station. There is a train conductor standing nearby. Also, on the plane, the overhead compartment is set up like a train overhead luggage rack. There are many pop culture references and parodies of real television commercials. The woman questioning her husband asking for a second cup of coffee is a reference to a real Yuban Coffee commercial from the 60's and 70's. The vintage commercial is available to view on KZbin.

Quynh always looks amazing. Dressed like she just got home from the office. Some great hair too.

I think a similar comedic movie that is worth checking out would be 'History of the World - Part I' with Mel Brookes. If you love this I know you would love that one too.

“We’ve got to get these people to a hospital.” “A hospital!? What is it?” “It’s a big building with patients but that’s not important just now.”

I suggest "Life of Bwian" by Monthy Python's Flying Circus and the TV-series "Fawlty Towers" by John Cleese. It was once labelled world's funniest TV-series

Nick, if you want some insights, read EVERY movie's trivia on IMDB on videos, let alone comedies like this.

Please react to Wrongfully Accused after this. It is comedy with Leslie Nielsen too

Hot Shots (and it's sequal) is along the line of Airplane, and VERY good.

The coffee joke about "Jim never has a second cup at home" is from a coffee commercial in the 70s and 80s. Also, Ethel Merman was a famous actress and singer, especially in musicals on stage so the soldier who thought he was Ethel Merman was actually played by Ethel Merman, it was hilarious if you knew who she was.

You mentioned looking for other classic comedies to watch, you and your girlfriend definitely need to watch Young frankenstein, absolutely hilarious and a golden classic!

So much of the humor is based in things only topical at the time. Boys' Life magazine. "Jim never has a second cup at home" from a commercial about coffee. "Since we watched that Ronald Reagan movie." Glad enough of the humor stood the test of time. Cheers for a fun reaction!

Some of the references in that movie were about things that were happening at that particular time, 1980.

Fantastic reaction guys, you really got it even if you didn’t know ALL the references. I’s it cruel to admit I was happy Quynh laughed herself sick? I’m just so pleased she loved Airplane! Kung Fu Hustle is a different kind of comedy but has many very absurd moments, and a minor but very sweet love story. Plus martial arts!
