Imo, HIMYM compares to Friends in only shallow ways. HIMYM is so much more creative. Friends couldn't have gotten away with some of the out of the box comedy that they did here, can you imagine Friends doing a musical episode? No. It just wouldn't have worked. Friends was so one dimensional compared to HIMYM.

For the longest time, FRIENDS was my favourite sitcom, then HIMYM came and changed everything. I did watch Modern Family too and I did enjoy the initial seasons a lot but then it got very boring. I tried to stick around but I couldn’t bring myself to continue it. It would be sad to see you go through that as well. But with HIMYM you will enjoy every episode as much as u enjoyed FRIENDS and tbh it is more emotionally driven and will definitely have an impact in your life (u will understand what i mean after you watch it). Trust me! This one is the better choice. Or do us a favour and watch both the show simultaneously and make us all happy 😭

@thatgirlwearingglasses I'd definitely have to disagree with you there. The way the story is told from Ted's future perspective is absolutely a unique take. Especially for a sitcom from 2005. The way Ted tells the story, and jumps around and at times is a completely unreliable narrator makes the show incredibly different from a writing perspective. Three of the episodes that comes to mind would be "The Mermaid Theory", "The Burning Beekeeper" and "How Your Mother Met Me." As a fantasy and sci-fi nerd I can say I've definitely seen tv shows and movies whose concept is incredibly different and out there and of course I'm not saying HIMYM is on that level. But for a sitcom that came out in the mid 2000s it's definitely different. I would say that if you compare this show to Friends, Seinfeld, King of Queens, Big Bang Thoery, etc. It's pretty easy to see that HIMYM definitely stands out with the way the story is portrayed!

Ngl, Friends, Buffy and HIMYM are like the trifecta of shows that I tend to rewatch, but HIMYM is definitely my favorite, and I cannot wait for you to continue with this show! If you enjoyed Friends, you will absolutely have a blast with this show! I’ve watched both FRIENDS and HIMYM a gazillion times but HIMYM holds a special place in my heart simply because its not just funny but has so many life lessons and serious discussions that have had a huge impact on me. I think Nick will really enjoy watching HIMYM more than Modern Family because Modern Family tends to get boring after 5-6 seasons, meanwhile no episode of HIMYM is ever boring. Yes, the ending is controversial, but that will only make this ride more fun as we can hear Nick’s opinion about it.

My issue with HIMYM compared to Friends is that it’s not as balanced like Friends. The later seasons of HIMYM are just not on the same level as earlier seasons. By a lot. And it’s probably because it got ridiculous to still not see the mother in whatever season 8, it really dragged on. And I really loved the show but I never rewatched it because of how much I got bored in some of the later episodes. So I only rewatched some individual episodes but never the whole show. With Friends, I rewatched every episode countless times. HIMYM should have had 5 seasons just because of the storyline setup. And it would be a perfect show.

I can highly recommend How I Met Your Mother! It's maybe not as consistent as something like Friends, but has way, way higher highs, both in terms of emotional storytelling and just creativity within the episodes. With HIMYM, you'll find out very quickly that this show likes experimenting with how to tell a sitcom story, changing up the formula, playing with time and expectations. The Pinapple Incident episode in season 1 is a prime example of the show's creativity!

Oooh, this is SO interesting! I've never seen Modern Family, but I was a fan of HIMYM and watched it in real time from mid-season 6 to the very end, before I ever binged through Friends in 2015. And while I do love Friends far more, and HIMYM now has a complicated and bittersweet memory because of its fucked up finale, I would be VERY intrigued to go through the journey with you, Nick, as my favorite series reactor! I say go for it! EDIT: "Little flashback in episode 1" Oh yeah, get used to it, this show just might be 50% flashback, HIMYM LOVES its flashbacks! ;)

What's great about HIMYM is that it does a lot of really, really cool narrative stuff: it plays with its timeline, with unreliable narrators, and uses stuff like the Rashomon effect that you don't expect from a TV show. And it does some of the most amazing callbacks to itself and turns things that you think are one-offs into motifs throughout the series. Plus, if you're a music fan, this show is like a treasure trove of great music (including the best music callback in TV history, for a Pavement song called "Spit on a Stranger").

My favorite thing about HIMYM is the running gags. They really, really commit to the bit in this show. I think the only show I can think of that does that particular thing better is Arrested Development, and I love AD, so it's probably no surprise I like HIMYM so much. HIMYM also walks the line between absurd, pure comedy and actual heart and character development very well a lot of the time. I think this show would be much more fun to go through in this reaction format than modern family because there are so many really well known recurring gags that I think everyone who has seen the show will anticipate you getting to, enjoy seeing you react to, and enjoy seeing how often you catch the references/ recurrences of past jokes because it does happen A LOT in this show.

I think a plus point for himym is that it’s very consistent. It has the longest living running gags and plays a lot with flashbacks (I mean the whole series is a giant flashback) and the costume and set designers are doing a really good job of staying consistent without huge continuity errors. I watched this show a million times and I still find things that were shortly mentioned in the first season and had a payback later on. In this show you can be sure that anytime a character (mostly ted) says that something will happen later on in the story or sth along the lines of: „I once fell into an elephant enclosure“, it will come back either as a scene or a mention. I just feel like this makes himym really special

Modern Family is a show I tried getting into twice, and both times dropped it after a few episodes. It just doesnt hit for me. On the other hand, HIMYM is legen...wait for it....... ............. I love Friends and How I met How I met did some things better than Friends, but most of the times it's so inspired its borderline copy paste. But it's like an alternative version, so it never bothered me too much. I love the characters, some jokes are absolute masterpiece, it has great cameos, etc.. Its a great show !
