The encyclopedia salesman was a cameo by magician Penn Jilette of “Pen and Teller.” He wasn’t really trying to con Joey. People used to go door-to-door selling those. And $50 a book is understandable bc back then it was literally the only way of looking anything up.

Great points. This is gonna make me sound old but I remember before we had internet at home, for any school homework that involved 'research', you went straight to the encyclopedia same as people go to Wikipedia now. If there was just a tiny paragraph on your topic, that was all you had to work with! 😆 (Some schools would have had libraries and some families would've taken their kids to the city library...but that just wasn't how things went down on our council estate, lol.)

One thing about the salesman scene, despite how we all probably cringed about Joey getting scammed, he clearly read the book and retained a decent amount. He wanted to talk about the Vietnam war, of all things. I wish it had become a running gag that he knew strange trivia about V subjects.

You're right about Monica's mom, she mentioned in the One Where Nana Dies Twice that her mother was super critical of everything she did. Definitely projecting that onto Monica! Season 4 is one of the best! So excited for the rest!

I think the Treager storyline is also quite good because it's a bit of a wink to all the critics who wouldn't shut up about how they couldn't possibly afford such a nice apartment in the real world - it's because it's her grandma's rent-controlled apartment that she's illegally subletting, duh!

09:16 when Phoebe says "This used to be your room? you must've been in very good shape as a kid" there are some levels to the joke: a) she doesn't realize this was not what the room looked like when Monica was a child b) she doesn't realize that they changed it because they didn't care to preserve it c) Monica is as always the 2nd best favorite child and is hurt by it d) Phoebe never had a child's room and that is why she doesn't know that this is not what one is supposed to look like e) Still Phoebe is enthusiastic about the room even with all the gym equipment in there f) Because being a 2nd favorite child is still so much better because you have parents that can give you your own room
