When frenchie was doggin men and said “the only guy a girl can trust is her daddy” I was totally expecting nick to say “oh come on, we’re not all bad” or something to that effect. Instead he says “sometimes not even them” my brain exploded at how different times are.

Great reaction. If I may I'd like to suggest the following movie musicals or at least ones that have songs/music as a major theme. I apologize if you've already reacted to any one of these. Fiddler on the Roof (1971) 2 hours 59 minutes, The Music Man (1961) 151 minutes, Hello Dolly (1969) 148 minutes,The Sound of Music (1965) 175 minutes, The Wizard of Oz (1939) 102 minutes, West Side Story (1961) 2 hours 32 minutes, Anchors Aweigh (1945) 140 minutes, Take Me Out To The Ball Game (1948) 93 minutes, On The Town (1949) 98 minutes, Footloose (1984) 107 minutes, Flashdance (1983) 94 minutes, That's Entertainment! (1974) 135 minutes. A compilation of 125 stars, nearly 100 films of the Golden Era of MGM Musicals. Narrated by Fred Astaire, Bing Crosby, Gene Kelly, Peter Lawford, Liza Minnelli (Judy Garland's [Wizard of Oz] daughter), Donald O'Connor, Debbie Reynolds (mother of Carrie Fisher- Princess Leila Star Wars), Mickey Rooney, Frank Sinatra, James Stewart (George Bailey- It's A Wonderful Life), Elizabeth Taylor. Some of these films may require 2 parts to capture the true nature and cover more ground. I personally don't mind 2 part reactions. Side note: I didn't include the the main stars, a plotline or anything else that might be a spoiler alert.

Jeff Conaway, the actor who played Kenickie, actually very seriously injured his back while doing a stunt for the Greased Lightnin' number. It ultimately led him down a spiral of substance abuse issues for the rest of his life, and he unfortunately died in 2011 from pneumonia.

When Kenickie says “a hickey from Kenickie” that was an actual hickey from Kenickies actor on Rizzo so she didn’t have to do the makeup. When Rizzo says “Elvis Elvis, let me be” that scene was filmed on the day Elvis died. Elvis was a potential candidate to play the teen angel. The black pantsuit had to be sown on to Olivia on set. Sandy is originally only from a different state but when Olivia couldn’t do an American accent the way they wanted they made Sandy Australian so Olivia could speak in her regular accent

We lost Olivia this year after a long battle with cancer. My heart broke when i heard she had finally gone. Although born in Oxford here in the UK. Olivias family moved to Austrailia when she was a toddler. She came back to the Uk after winning a talent competition and was snapped up by a record company. She was mainly country but had a number of early hits here. She represented us in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1974 and came forth. She was invited to record an album in the US which was very different to her earlier stuff. It got her noticed by Hollywood and was cast as Sandy. Her career went mega and the title track of her album Physical was number onein the US billboard chart for a record 10 weeks. Many hits and albums followed until her first cancer diagnosis. But she battled on for nearly 20 years before a 3rd bout of cancer in her spine robbed the world of a beautiful soul and one of the greatest voices ever.

It took me about 20 times (and growing up about a decade) before I realized that this is one of the naughtiest "clean" movies ever. "Greased Lightning" alone is filled with double entendres and out and out sexual innuendos. Now I can't watch without laughing at how many people LOVE this movie without catching the really dirty parts in almost every scene. (An "Athletic Supporter" is a jock strap... and there are many such allusions made just like that.) I thought it was maybe my dirty mind until others started confirming what I finally recognized. Takes the movie to a WHOLE new level.

I was a 90s baby but I was obsessed with Grease growing up. I watched it so much and I knew every song. I still know every song. There was like a weird period of time where they started doing LIVE versions of popular musicals where they would film the cast performing it live and it was then aired on tv live. There’s a Grease Live, Rent Live and Hairspray Live.

I love live theatre and I’ve seen grease live on stage, I do think when it comes to movie adaptions of musicals, they’re seldom successful. Grease is a great exception, but the LIVE filmed for television versions (that are not like strict proshots because they have to change lyrics and what not as they are being aired live) I have honk are just kind of interesting. Grease was originally a very successful Broadway musical, a coming of age theme depicting high school in the 1950's. Some concepts that need clarification was that Sandra Dee reference. Dee was a Hollywood starlet known as this depicting the "goody-two-shoes," all-American girl in late 1950's teen movies.

FYI--many of the actors in the movies actually were big stars in the 1950's--Frankie Avalon was the angel in BEAUTY SCHOOL DROPOUT, Edd Byrne was Vince Fontaine, the MC of the danceoff, and many others, like Joan Blondell, the waitress at the malt shop. Eve Arden (principal) and Sid Caesar (football coach) were HUGE stars. The director wanted them all in the movie, and he got 'em. So glad you enjoyed it--it's an all-time favorite of mine!

Nick, if you rewatch the Barbie movie, I think you'll notice some elements inspired by this movie Grease, especially the dance break the Kens do all in black (like Danny does with the T-Birds in the song Greased Lightning), and a laugh Ryan Gosling does as Ken is very reminiscent of one John Travolta does in Grease when he's trying to be all cool and pretend he's not into Sandy ("Don't make me laugh... ha ha ha"). It's pretty funny.

"Grease" is a reference to "Greasers," a youth subculture of the 1950's and 60's. It's thought that the name "greaser" might have started as an ethnic slur of sorts, denoting the Mediterranean, Hispanic, and Latino origins of most greasers. People still use "greaseball" to insult certain ethnicites.

As kids, whenever it got to that part, my sister and I would sing it as a duet. I sang Danny’s part and she sang Sandy’s part. We had so much fun practicing the song together, then we preformed it to our parents. 😂 One more memory I have is that we would always fast forward Sandy’s slow song that she sang at night outside Frenchies house. It was too long and boring for us.

35:20 but this movie is about the 50s. Nostalgia has always been about 25-30 years in the past. That’s why currently everyone loves the 90s. When this movie was popular it was a celebration of those earlier days. Back when rock n roll was new and kids were just starting to be “wild and rebellious”. As a kid in the 80s it was weird to imagine your parents like this.

This is one of those movies that is popular in any decade. I was surprised when I was babysitting some ten to twelve year olds in high school and they wanted to go see this when it was back in theaters and their parents were ok with it. The kids were more into action films but they were singing these songs all the way home after the movie. 21:56 no this is Frankie Avalon. Big singer back in the day. 25:20 this scene was filmed during the summer when school was out and the gym had no A/C and no ventilation. People were passing out cause the lights for filming heated the room up even more. 30:58 she dropped it on purpose cause it’s only supposed to be good luck if the person picks it up themselves which it did turn out to be good luck cause I don’t think he could’ve beat him. He would’ve let his anger get the best of him and he’d lose but Danny doesn’t have the issues with the guy like Kenickie does. 33:03 we had teachers that if the kids did something they’d kiss a pig. One soccer coach drank a coke out of shoe when his team won all their games. Some teachers if it will “light a fire” under the kids to do something will do whatever it takes for them to succeed. Olivia Newton John had to be sewn into her black pants at the end cause the zipper broke. This was shown in 2020 on the BBC and people were complaining that it was promoting misogyny, racism and homophobia. Olivia Newton John did a podcast saying that people need to relax and they were acting silly. That this was a film shot in the 70s about the 50s and it’s a fun musical not to be taken seriously. That’s one problem with this world they see movies or shows that have things that aren’t considered proper and think they should be banned when they need to use this stuff as a teaching moment on how you don’t treat someone. If they block things and lock them away them they’ll at some point come back as appropriate.

This musical is such a fun combo of camp/cheese and legit bops and quality dancing/costumes etc. I've always been fond of it. It's not my favorite, but some people really despise it I guess. I think it's a lot if fun. Too bad the sequel is a disgrace that never should have come to fruition 😅 The Pink Ladies are too "Alt" to be this universe's version of the Plastics. They're cool but they're not especially popular and they're "bad" girls. It's just so funny to me how frighin OLD everyone is. One of the Ladies is in her mid-30's 😅 I think Travolta was the youngest of the main characters at 23 if memory serves. It must have been a hard thing to hear about his co-star's passing, RIP Olivia Newton John ❤ Also, Kinikie doesn't know Rizzo's real name is Betty cuz everyone always calls her by her nickname. I don't know that they ever mention her last name, but now I'm curious. She's also probably my fave character and Stockard Channing does such an amazing job in the role. One of my favorite lines is between her and Danny when he tells her "Aw, bute the weenie, Riz" and she quips back, "With relish" 😂 Love that double entendre, and the mischievous look she's got on her face when she says it is just so cute 🥰 Cool reaction Nick, as usual 👏🎉 Give your GF a kiss for us, she's such a doll, too bad she missed this one. I think she would enjoy it, don't you? 😸

I hope I haven't already commented on this. I see I already gave it a thumbs up, but I don't see my comment unless it's really far down. So if I'm repeating myself, sorry! I was obsessed with this movie! I was an unpopular nerd in high school, so I was fascinated with the idea of Sandy and Danny reinventing themselves for each other. In my high school, seniors had their own separate cafeteria and it had a juke box! On one of the last days of school, I took a ton of quarters to school and I chose every song from Grease on the juke box! Hopelessly Devoted to You, Greased Lightning, We Go Together, and You're the One That I Want. Unfortunately, everybody groaned when the music started. Apparently, they didn't consider Grease to be cool enough for them. Thing it, someone else made a few song selections before me, so they didn't start to play until I was back at my table. So they thought some other guy who was standing at the juke box when my songs started was the one who chose them all. Sorry, Steve! That line you said you didn't know what it meant, "You're a one woman USO", The USO is an organization that gets celebrities to go to war zones and perform for our troops. You'll see mentions of them in movies from World War II, as well as Korea and Viet Nam. Bob Hope was famous for hosting a lot of USO shows. I think the Korean War was the war we were fighting when this movie was set. Maty wrote pen pal letters to lots of our soldiers in Korea. In the original stage musical, she gets her own song where she sings to one of her pen pals and she's focused on the presents he sent her. The song is called "Freddy My Love" and it's actually on the movie soundtrack, because they play it in the background of some scenes. The drive in movie ring was not an engagement ring. In those days, I hear guys gave their girlfriends "promise" rings to show they were "going steady". If the guy was an athlete, it was customary for him to give her his letterman's sweater as well, just to tell other guys she's taken. The guardian angel was Frankie Avalon, who was famous for doing a series of teen beach movie musicals with former Disney Mouseketeer Annette Funicello (sort of the Britney Spears of her day). The adults in the cast are actually mostly famous stars from the 50s. The principle was famous for playing a teacher in the sitcom, Our Miss Brooks. Frank Fontaine was played by an actor who was a heart-throb on a detective show called 77 Sunset Strip. The waitress was in a lot of big movies in the 40s and 50s and later played a supporting role on a 70s western called Here Come the Brides (about cowboys who get mail order brides). The coach was Sid Caesar who was a comedian who hosted an early, live variety show called Your Show of Shows. And the shop teacher was mostly famous for playing Esmerelda on Bewitched, but she was also one of the mothers in the original Charlie and the Chocolate Factory movie. I think she was the mom of the kid obsessed with television.

At the time Grease came out in the theaters in 1978, I was 9 years old and being raised in an abusive, dysfunctional household. As a result, I turned towards watching LOTS of TV and went to the movies as a way of providing myself with escape and comfort from my misery. Back then I was going to the movies with my then best friend. We were a couple of fanatics about the movies. We talked, read, ate, drank, and slept the movies. And we went to the movies together once a week, every week for a lot of years from the 1970s-1980s. We saw literally hundreds upon hundreds of movies over the years. We tried to see every new movie that came out regardless of plot, genre (he loved horror films, I preferred comedy), critics reviews, who was starring in it, etc. So there was no particular reason we went to see Grease. It just happened to be a new movie that was just released. You wouldnt think a movie musical such as Grease would appeal to a 9 year old boy. But being an abused, neglected child, there were a small handful of movies that managed to hit me in the very right places at the very right time. Grease was one of those movies. Right from my very first viewing, it quickly became one of my all time favorite movies and remains that to this day. After seeing the movie, later on I would buy the Grease soundrack record album, the Grease bubble gum trading cards, and the Grease fotonovel. In the following years, whenever Grease popped up on tv, I'd drop everything to watch it. Today I own the movie on DVD. So, I say to the cast and crew of Grease, from the bottom of the heart of a young, abused boy, thank you. Thank you all so very, very much

I never understand how people can say a movie is dated when them movie came out out was 78 but it's storyline is set in the 50s. So why would we think it's dated? Is a period piece. We understood that it wasn't about teens in the 80s but the 50s and accepted that is what it was on the 50s. I dint her the dated thing. If like asking if the movie glory is dated?

"Those of you who grew up in the 80's..." Remember the plot of the movie is set in 1958. So for those of us who grew up in the 80's, this would have appealed more to our parents. Remember, this came out in the 1970s, but it was set in the 1950s. Have you reacted to or seen Child's Play? The actress who plays Marty in this is Aunt Maggie from that. And the actress who played Frenchie was on a really funny 1980s sitcom called Benson; also worth a watch - - maybe a reaction. P.S. In the late 1970s/early 1980s, we (kids) walked around with combs in our pockets, and used them (back when feathered hair was in). I wonder if it's because we all saw this when we were little. Some '50s styles were definitely back in style in the 80s, too, and they're coming around again - - soon we may see reactors in argyle sweater vests and penny loafers - - who knows?

I've watched this movie hundreds of times because it was my favorite as a kid and i completely missed all of the sexual innuendo. As an adult, I realized that Danny is not a good guy, especially at the beginning. He definitely charmed a lot of girls and dumped them after getting what he wanted -- you can tell from the way Annette and Cha-cha react, but even moreso, by how he treats Rizzo. That "sloppy seconds" comment was especially cruel, basically saying she's worthless because she's not a virgin. Rizzo is my favorite character because of her growth (she's bitter about Danny, takes it out on Sandy, and dumps Kenickie to keep from being hurt by him, but eventually sees Danny isn't worth her time, Sandy is a friend, and she deserves a guy who is into her the way that Kenickie is). It's a surprisingly happy ending for the character set up to be the mean girl or villain in the beginning.

I had just turned 11 a couple of days before this came out and it was HUGE that summer, made in the 70s when 50s nostalgia was big with American Graffiti and Happy Days/Laverne & Shirley on tv. Grease uses just about every stereotype that existed for that time period, my mom graduated in '51 and she just rolled her eyes at it 😁 I remember calling in to the radio station to request they play various songs so I could tape them off the radio, before I got the album that Christmas. They wouldn't play Greased Lightning for obvious reasons, I don't think they had a radio friendly edit yet

Wait. "People who went to high school in the 80s"? The movie takes place in 1959, and, when it came out in the late 70s, early 80s, it was nostalgia for our parents (though not very realistic even for them, I imagine). Watch Rebel Without a Cause for a more realistic look at 50s kids.

Ironically, the day they shot Rizzo (Stockard Channing) performing "Look At Me, I'm Sandra Dee" and she references Elvis in the song, is the day Elvis just happened to die. Olivia Newton-John (who had just recently turned 30 when filming started) had already established herself in the US as a singer (she started out as a country singer until her "signature" song was released in 1974, "I Honestly Love Her") but admitted she was scared to death to try to become an actress, with one of her reasons was how much older in real life she was than John Travolta (she was nearly 12 years his senior). But she said that the first time they met, he put her at ease and made it easy to make the movie and it would be the beginning of the long friendship (they did a second movie together 5 years later, "Two Of A Kind") until she sadly passed away on August 8th, 2022. The day the shot the "National Bandstand" show it was SO HOT that a lot of the actors & extras were fainting and getting sick. The iconic outfit the Olivia wears at the end of the movie for her Sandy transformation, she would actually be able to fit in 40 years later!

"Sandra Dee" was a popular actress from the 50's, portrayed as the puritanical, virginal teen. So when Sandy says "goodbye to Sandra Dee" that's her hint she's ready to dive into adulthood and "Get Physical". I invite you to look that up in association with the lead actress, Olivia Newton-John.

The Teen Angle was Frankie Avalon. He made several ‚Beach“ movies in the 60‘s with Annette Funicello. I believe is biggest hit was a song called „Venus“. The Beach movies were: Beach Party, Muscle Beach Party, Bikini Beach and Beach Blanket Bingo. The movie „Muscle Beach Party“ introduced a new young singer who went on to do GREAT things…..“Little Stevie Wonder“. Cheers

- The cast included a few cast members of the stage show: Travolta (originally played Doody onstage), Jeff Conaway (who was Danny in the same touring company as Travolta), and Jamie Donnelly (Jan, who reprised her role from the original Broadway cast and was the oldest cast member in her 30s). - The cast is stuffed with stars and character actors of the 1950s in the adult roles: Coach Calhoun was played by comedy legend Sid Caesar, Principal McGee was Eve Arden, a star of B-level films of the 40s and 50s, Vince Fontaine played by Edd Byrnes was a TV star of the series Route 66, and Teen Angel was Frankie Avalon, a huge teen heartthrob of music ("Venus" was his signature hit), and films (Beach Blanket Bingo with Annette Funicello and the sequels). - Olivia Newton- John was a HUGE music star at the time, and was Travolta's choice to play Sandy, even though she had only minimal experience as an actress. She made other films, but this was her only hit film. Her biggest flop was Xanadu (1980) which also starred Gene Kelly in his last big screen film, which ironically had several huge songs that became hits for her and the band Electric Light Orchestra including the title song. Travolta and Olivia remained friends for the rest of her life. in fact, he took her death in August 2022 pretty hard. They did one other film together Two Of A Kind in 1983. - Most of the songs in the film, sung by characters in the film are from the original stage version. There are the exceptions..the songs in the National Bandstand sequence performed by Sha-Na-Na are mostly hits of the era except "Hand Jive" from the show, Olivia's "Hopelessly Devoted To You" and "You're The One That I Want" were written by John Farrar, Olivia's main songwriter at the time, and "Grease" was written by Barry Gibb (of The Bee Gees) and sung by Frankie Valli. Many stage companies that put on Grease tend to pay the extra royalties to perform "Hopelessly Devoted To You" and "You're The One That I Want" because they are so loved, a tradition that started with the 1990s Broadway revival of the show.
