i had a 383 that i put in a P76 Leyland in Australia. you can laugh a lot but i got the complete drive line from a 68 dodge phoenix . rebuilt with .030" over size piston as the the bores had so much wear. heads wear cracked but a friend had some 440 heads. got them reconditioned and put it all together. had to make some mods to the sump to fit it in the car with an external pick up in the sump. made everything work power steering and aircon. used a Torqer 2 manifold with a 750cfm Edelbrock carb. same as the carter 750cfm. rebuilt the 727 trans as it slipped into 3rd gear. i found one snap ring in the wrong place in the clutch packs that caused the slipping. cut all the leaf spring brackets off and welded the coil brackets on to fit in the car. in the end it was a great sleeper. the car was not well liked in Australia but i made some people cry as the 383BB left them for dead.

My good friend bought a 70 Roadrunner brand new. 383 4 speed. I put headers on it and changed the carb to a dbl pumper. We put 7” slicks on it and opened the headers at the dragstrip. I drove it to a class win that day and he got the trophy. It went 13.87 at 101-102 and was miss firing above about 4500-5000. Points ignition probably the problem or maybe spark plugs. We drove it to the track. I’m sure he still has that trophy from over 50 years ago!

I owned a 1970 383 Road Runner automatic hardtop with the air grabber, black hood stripe, bucket seats and center console. It also had the stock exhaust. It never sounded like this car. It had a deeper more rumbly less raspy exhaust note. That car would really rip! Never timed it in the 0 to 60 or quarter mile, but it would easily blow past 110 mph in a heartbeat and was still climbing strong above 135 mph. It was not a slow car at all! There were only a couple cars I could not catch, but each one of those had a whole lot more engine than I did. And all 4 of my drum breaks were painted that factory red which looked great behind those magnum 500 chrome mag steel wheels with the brushed stainless trim rings. I did not know the red paint on the brake drums was put on at the factory until decades later. I cherish the memories I have of that car.
