Why does Lee Haney get so little mention in bodybuilding KZbin. It's like they go from Arnold, skip the 80s and go right to the 90s. When I was a kid, Haney was THE man.

Aaron Starks, in my own opinion I believe that it might be because he didn't bring anything amazing to the sport besides the greatest record holding run in bodybuilding, allow me to explain. First Arnold brought it out to the masses, his attitude, physique, charisma were all eaten up by the newly interested people that just started to see and learn about bodybuilding. 2nd, Dorian changed the game completely by coming in huge, bigger, harder, and more conditioned than anyone before, which is partly why we see guys so big today. 3rd Ronnie took it further by being an absolute beast and outdid everyone with such sheer mass coming in just over 300lbs and also tied Lee's record of 8 straight wins. Lee Haney on the other hand only had the record to his name which he deserved rightfully so due to his consistency and amazing physique, but other than the record 8 straight the game didn't change. Dorian and Ronnie also had tougher competition to deal with, being up against the likes of Nasser, Shawn Ray, Kevin Levrone, Flex Wheeler, etc.. That might be the reason why he gets overlooked but again that is just my assumption. I personally always hear Lee's name come up because of his record, but, that's the only thing I ever hear about him, nothing else. It's sad because he was the best for an amazing 8 year run, and I do agree that he does deserve mountains of respect.

srg914 uhhhh bruh Dorian in 93 94 95 96 looked crazy at the Olympia, and the German Grand Prix (no big waist) I think ur referring to the 97 Yates when his physique was fucked because of injuries
@juliohernandez51107 жыл бұрын
Dorian just represented a new era, the same way Haney did. Lee came up with a physique that balanced size with aesthetics in a way that had not seen before. Besides, Haney was also noticeably bigger than most of his competition at the time, and that certainly gave him a decisive advantage. Dorian took the size aspect to another level and combined it with extreme conditioning which to me has yet to be equaled. You might argue that Ronnie had great conditioning in his prime and was bigger than Dorian, which he certainly was, but never as dry and shredded as Yates in Dorian's best years. But back to the original point, Haney is certainly the last of the aesthetic Olympia winners.
@bigstink97 жыл бұрын
LOL. Haney was never a cop. I think you're confusing him with ROnnie Coleman. At least I hope you are. Haney was 'very far from being aesthetic'???? Huh?? Haney didn't win because of politics. Haney was more often than not the biggest, hardest, most proportional and one of the best posers at every Mr, O he competed in. There was no financial advantage for the Weiders to market a Black Mr. O who was undeserving.smh
@bigstink97 жыл бұрын
Nah, even when Dorian was at his aesthetic best in the IFBB, '91-'93, his aestheitics were average to poor. He never had what anyone would call a 'pretty' physique. His abs were flat and he had poor muscle separation, except for his back. And Yates' waistline was always on the thick side. It just got worse after 1993.

madmile1997 Right on bro. There's a vid on YT where Lee Haney is guest posing at 260+#, and he was beginning to lose his classic proportions. Yes his arms were bigger, but is waist was much thicker too. Too many BBers don't know what their sweet spot is and think they can gain weight indefinitely and still look impressive. IMO Haney knew his best weight was between 248-258#, and never deviated from that. In that sense, Haney never lost the artistry and aesthetics of pro BBing.

He was in top shape for both just prior to the Olympia and was a freak of freaks. Samir was at the 85' seminar as well and looked tiny compared to Lee.

Afraid of losing to Dorian Yates? Ha. Remember, as Mr O, Haney had an insider's ear to the trends in bodybuilding. He knew how to win another O, & decided it would do his physique & his legacy more harm than good : All he had to do was upgrade his drug intake to the new mass-monster levels, & gain another 20 lbs, forsaking his tiny waist, & beating Yates at his own game. Thanks for not doing that, Lee.

But what did the "writing" say?: "Take more drugs, eat more, come in at least 20 lbs heavier than ever before." As a competitor who never gained an oz that'd affect his waist/ taper/aesthetics, he refused.

Lee Haney took mass to the limit while still maintaining a look that was aesthetically pleasing. His physique can still be viewed as a work of art because of his lines, proportion and conditioning. The true art of the sport was somehow lost after his era and I think many fans hope that one day that part of the sport will return.

Awesome as usual Nick. I agree, that he retired for his family. Bodybuilding at that level BACK THEN was intense and time consuming. He, like all bodybuilders BACK THEN, competed YEAR ROUND. Not like today's one and done competitors. Lee Haney had a great balance with his small waist, wide upper body, great legs.
@bigstink97 жыл бұрын
After Lee won his first Mr. O, he only competed once a year. Remember during that time the top IFBB guys had Weider and supplement contracts, so Haney probably earned close to double or triple his Mr. O title money every year. Still, at some point the reality of knowing that Lee at close to 260# in his final Mr. O was going to have to take more PEDs and put on more muscle mass AND get more shredded if wanted to continue to win more Sandows, probably wasn't appealing to him at that time. Lee Haney left the game on his own terms. Nobody 'retired' him.

Lee was freak in his own right. Let me explain. Genetics has a large part of the Type of BB's you see today and back then. V taper was the thing you had to have; many BB's that compete today could not have competed then because they lack the genetics to have a crazy v-taper at any weight. Likewise, many BB from yester years could not compete today because they don't have the frame to pack on muscle to the degree needed to place now. This is where Haney comes in; he had genetics to have a small waist but still pack on muscle without HGH and insulin. Not many can come on stage at 248-250 with a vacuum and 31 inch waist. A mass monster dominated competition allows for those with naturally wider waists and blocky frames, which can put on muscle quickly, to be dominant.

He lectured me on eating healthy which I keep telling myself one of these days I'll put into practice.

Didn't Mendenhall have some sort of car accident in which he said the doctor attributed his conditioning for saving his life? That would be an interesting video as well. Edit: December 84 he was in a car accident in which he was EJECTED thru the windshield, which would normally have killed most normal men (broken neck from hitting the windshield or internal injuries from hitting the pavement). All that muscle saved his life. I remember reading that story as a kid and being fascinated by it for some reason.

Subbed. And thank you for this. I give *every* credit and respect to Arnold Schwarzenegger. His impact on the sport is beyond measure or question, as are his accomplishments in and outside of it. He is the single most influential figure to ever come out of BB. Having said that, I am sick to death of Arnold fanboyism, he is most assuredly NOT the 'greatest bodybuilder of all time' from an aesthetic standpoint - that is fatuous nonsense unsubstantiated by anything other than a cult of personality. THIS man right here has actual facts to back him up. *8 unbroken, unquestionable wins at a time when BB was at it's aesthetic zenith.* ie after the top heavy era and before the mass monster craze. This was the best of times in BB, when men were big but still human, and women were muscular but still female. And Lee won it all, then left on top.

Haney retired at the right time. He would have had to take more drugs to increase his mass to stave off Yates and the rest of the field. Who knew that Yates would be the start of bodybuilding turning toward the darkside?

Lee was born with the gift of excellent genetics, that small waist line and V shape was always there, and his symmetry was on point. That photo tells you why he can't be touched

5:38 Haney just annihilates Yates. I'm one of the few who thinks Yates has an ugly physique....poor chest genetics, but later in his career, freaky mass, and perhaps the 2nd best back in history. In '91, Haney was still superior and WAY MORE AESTHETIC all-around. It's a treat to watch this video after following the ugliness of today's era..lol
