The more muscle you have the more carbs you can handle while retaining insulin sensitivity. Exercise also improves insulin sensitivity. Its like the body is made in such a way you have to earn carbs through working out. If you are low in muscle, high in fat and don't work out than carbs are quick to make you insensitive to insulin. You hear lots of normal people get diabetes but its usually never an active bodybuilder, even though the latter often eats more volume of food and more frequently.

I've heard Arnold say almost the same thing. It's fascinating that (at least) two of the greatest champions in the history of the sport both advocate staying within about 5% of competition weight. That means it has to be an incredible commitment and grind 24/7/365 to compete with the likes of them.

Lee Haney's advice may work among those who are serious body builders - although a strict Carnivore diet has worked well for some body builders - but for the average person who is overweight, carb-addicted, and insulin resistant, it's not particularly wise advice in my opinion. Keto is not "crazy" as he says, and a diet heavy in meat and saturated animal fat has healed many people from chronic inflammation, has been good for weight loss, and in restoring a healthy gut flora. Keto and Carnivore diets (especially a Carnivore diet!) have been quite successful in improving autoimmune issues, and in some cases even entirely eliminating such health concerns. Many people have also reduced their anxiety, gotten off their meds, and essentially brought their bodies in balance as a result of a diet that is animal-based. Haney appears to also adhere to the modern-day 'cholesterol' myth which says that high cholesterol levels are markers for bad health. Well, not necessarily so (see Dr. Malcolm Kendrick in his book, 'The Great Cholesterol Myth' who completely debunks this common misconception). There is some nuance that needs to be understood, so it's not as simple and clear-cut as even some physicians think. There's even a growing body of evidence that LDL is not, by itself, necessarily a bad thing. Again, in fairness, Haney's opinions are related to body builders, especially professional body builders. Perhaps he does not feel the same when it comes to the average American who eats what most Americans consume - namely, lots of processed carbs, sugary drinks, lots of seed oils, alcohol, cereal, breads, pasta, etc.?

@@skepticalbutopen4620 No, not in the least. People thrive on a keto and carnivore diet and not just survive. By means of eliminating carbs they have also eliminated most if not all of their health issues. It's funny too how when our government began to promote a high carb diet in the 1970s, so also did rates of obesity increase to skyrocketing levels. Yes, some people can tolerate carbs better than others, but that's not the same as saying that carbs are necessary or any other such nonsense.

If you are fat adapted what usually takes up a few month on Keto or Carnivore you will greatly build muscle. Most people just have no idea cause they never tried it. The amount of cholesterol you eat will greatly effect your hormone. Bodybuilders make a big mistake to avoid saturated fat. Asides from that, longterm you will have lower inflammation in your body what leads to less injuries and better overall health. You can look at Vince Girondas diet principles.

Scientists support that low carbs to lower carbs and eating higher protein fat is key to lowering body fat and prevent diseases by preventing insulin resistance. Fat is a better source of fuel than carb😅s. Besides, the drugs you were taking which increased your metabolism as long with your hard training and increased faster metabolism all play a part. So i need to stop now as you are not mentioning all this particularly the drugs you were taking. Eating a animal fats does not raise your cholestrol…. Listen to Dr Lustig here on KZbin. Nuts are full of oxalates and phytic acid which blocks absorption of many minerals. You’re way better off eating a grass fed steak or even uncured bacon to supplement protein and fat. Also dietary fat intake has a very mild influence on your cholesterol which is overly treated in the US because of out dated science and big pharma greed.

Keto is mostly suitable for obese people who want to lose fat fast and are sendentary. My father is trying keto when he decides to go on a diet all these years and I see he suffers. Also, I'm about to throw up sometimes watching him putting so much olive oil on his cheese or fried eggs. Yes, he lost weight some years ago, but he gained it back and now he lost it again. Keto is the epitome of yo-yo dieting and frankly, it is not sustainable long term unless you live alone in the mountains. I tried it as well and I felt miserable and also overweight. The last 2 years I include carbs in my diet (yes, even the oh so villainous sugar) but I track my calories meticulously I lost such a serious amount of fat, that now I'm probably a little lower than 10% body fat (thanks also to endless hours of cardio), stronger than ever (thanks to strength training) and more satisfied than ever, thanks to bread, rice, pies, fruit and occasional treats(I usually eat a crepe with chocolate and biscuits once a week and burgers and ice cream on special occasions).

Started lifting at 19. When I turned 25 I began Keto after gainig at least 20lbs of lean* muscle mass (I was 7% bf). Lost maybe 5-8lbs over 6 months. Man I was lean like a mf...!! Around 5-6% . However; I began losing Hemoglobulin (Red-blood cells) and lost a lot of veins and fullness. But man I was high like a manic and never felt better mentally and physically. It took at least 6 months for my blood-volume to get back at baseline. And I gained a lot of brown fat (because of the cold baths every morning in the winter in Norway.) Would I do it again thjat way? No. Do I regret it? Absolutely not. Keto is not for muscle. But it certainly helps in every other area if you are predisposed. Now, I cycle the diet and do Hybrid-forms of it. Would recommend everyone to try at least 6 weeks as it really promotes cell health

Carbs are fuels. PIck the right fuels wisely, some of them are terrible and are toxic, and others are right on the money.

That's because you weren't getting enough electrolytes to keep your body and muscles hydrated. Once you start cutting the carbs, you lose the water that is retained with the stored carbs in your muscles, so you lose electrolytes hence the cramping. Once you add those back in, things would go a lot smoother.

Respectfully, unless you have several hours a day carved out for proper cardio and weight training, managing lower carbs is how normal people can avoid unnecessary fat. I think everyone should strive to be around 10%. That’s awfully difficult if you are eating piles of rice and starches
@lowcarbbully
@lowcarbbully Жыл бұрын
I like Lee Haney, but he’s wrong about low carb and no carb diets. Steak is the most nutritious source of protein that we have. Saturated fat has been proven to be demonized wrongly. Saturated fat is necessary and cholesterol is necessary. Recent research has shown that there is no relationship between red meat and cancer and that cholesterol is definitely necessary for hormone maintenance and especially as you age. A Japanese study showed that the people who had the highest cholesterol after the age of 50 years old are the people that lived the longest. I was a low level bodybuilder for 2 1/2 years in my early 20s, obviously not nearly at the level of Lee Haney. But I prescribed to the same philosophy regarding carbohydrates. Many bodybuilders used carb depletion and carb loading in order to increase vascularity and cause the water to get forced into the muscles. It works. But the reason it works is because it is a short-term manipulation of the body’s metabolism where it shocks it by eliminating its primary energy source of carbohydrates. The human body is always looking for equilibrium. So you can do hacks that help you to draw water out and force water into the muscles. People do this with sodium loading as well. But over time your body will figure out a way around the hack. With carb depletion, over time your body would be starving for energy so eventually it begins producing ketones, in order for the ketones to use fat for an energy source. Once this occurs, your body becomes a fat burner. For those who say, “are you saying that you know more than Lee Haney?” I’m saying regarding low carb diets absolutely. I have not only studied them for the last six years, I have been on a carnivore diet for five of the six years that I have been low carb. The last year and a half I only eat red meat and water. I work out 3 to 4 times a week and I am 60 years old. A high carb bodybuilder diet helped contribute to a bunch of my metabolic issues. And that was without steroid use. I had 40 years worth of migraines and a host of other issues. I had some insulin resistance and heart and blood pressure issues. Carnivore lifestyle has rid me of migraines, and my heart and blood pressure issues. Not just that, but unlikely Haney, I am eating like a horse and getting stronger at 60 years old. I eat roughly 4000 cal a day and my red meat macros come out to about 300 g of protein daily and about 300 g of fat daily. (68% fat,32%protein,0% carbs) The problem for most people is that there is an adaptation period. And for people who are carb heavy eaters, that adaptation can take months. The facts regarding glycogen stores is that, after fully adapted, you replenish glycogen the same as a carbohydrate consumer. But you have to have been fat adapted for quite a while. The human body is an amazing God given biological machine. But years, eating high carbohydrate and working out hard takes its toll on your insulin system. Constant insulin spikes wears that system out. when you use fat as an energy source, you are resting the insulin system and relying on your gut and hydrochloric acid and the intestines in order to get absorption of your nutrients. It’s a much more effective process for the body, especially if your insulin system has been taxed over the years. In addition, most of the steroid guys have to be on TRT for the rest of their life as a carb burner, in order to maintain that insulin sensitivity for muscle growth, and in order to have the testosterone needed for their workouts. When you are consuming fat, the fat is creating cholesterol and is feeding your testosterone. It’s a natural steroid. Anyway, I’m sure I’ll get some hate on this. But I am living proof. This is an N equals one experiment that has extended my life and has given me a future life with no migraines and no blood pressure issues. Lee Haney wouldn’t know this because he never committed to it. That’s understandable. But it doesn’t mean he’s right. Also his recommendation to use nut and seed oils over saturated fat is bad advice. Unfortunately the mainstream media and the pharmaceutical industry is not publicizing the science and facts that are behind the demonization of saturated fat and cholesterol although The New York Times did an article in 2017 and Joe Rogan recently interviewed a doctor from England who debunked the saturated fat lie. Dr Aseem Malhotra.
