Been following you since you popped that 3:56 indoors and pretty much “jumped” into the limelight. I was most impressed with your 2013 3:34 1500m. Always felt if you shifted your focus to 1500m your times would of improved dramatically while learning to race that distance with top level competition. (Sub 3:30 perhaps).. however I think you made the right move focusing on the 800m and your success on the international level aka World Champs/Olympics proved that point. There’s always that what if factor though..... =) Anyways I enjoy your KZbin content, I’m a former D1 xc/track athlete and truly appreciate what you’ve accomplished! Keep it up

Played semiprofessional but decided to pursue other passions at Uni, gained 20 kg and haven't been able to lose weight until this year. Now i'm running again, and it's exciting to try to aim for pr. I'm sure I can. And your an inspiration, switching from an elite md, to ld to sprints. Great video as usual Nick! Really appreciate the time your investing in to the channel. Your upload consistency and the improved audio/video quality are awesome. Some of your improvements are significant before you reached relative peak shape and performance. Assuming an individual is still running above 4 min/mile and all resources, environment and training are average or collegiate, how much of a time improvement would you expect to see month-to-month during a training season?
@nicksymmonds5 жыл бұрын
at the HS level its impossible to say simply because puberty changes EVERYTHING. 30 seconds drops are not uncommon in .a season for HS kids. For professional men, I would expect to see a 5-10 second drop from the season opener to the season's best.

I'm finishing off 8th grade next month and I'm going for a 5:40 at least before we return to school in August. Some of these times people throw out which are often sub-5 really make me feel slow, but I did some quick math and the average mile at our meets is right at 6:05 for almost all 8th graders and a couple 7th so I'm not lagging, and the average among the non-track members is around 7:45-8:30.

Are your legs dying or is it your lungs? My nephew sucked the first year he tried and was decent the next year. It takes time to build the muscle systems necessary. For your lungs, get on a treadmill and walk 4 mph for 30 min; everyone can do that. Keep increasing the angle to 10% while keeping your heart rate down where you're still able to have a short conversation. This might take 2-3 months. I've done this multiple times before and am up to 6% right now, age 64. The advantage is you're using walking muscles instead of running muscles. After that it's just building the running muscle and the heart & lungs will keep pace. I eventually ran miles in the 4:20s. You're lucky you have the speed; I never did.

How far will run 70 miles per week for 4 months drop my 21:30 3 mile to a 17:00?

If you're a 21:30 3 miler then you're almost certainly going to get injured running 70 mpw

@@alanyu6846 it's possible, but I'd talk to a coach or a pro if you're looking to get super serious.

What's an argument for running the 1,500m? 3 and 3/4 laps? The lack of symmetry and completeness of that hurts my brain and triggers my nonexistent OCD. 1,500m feels like a DNF for a 4 lap race. We do races in laps or fractions of a lap if it's less than one. The split times are annoying since one is 75% of the distance as the rest. I hate the 1,500 as a distance. The rest of the world should do everyone a favor and do the 1,600 just to make the lap count and splits easier to follow.

Spot on.... you will not have the fastest times right away. My freshmen year times went from a 5:25 to 5:10 to 5:00 to 4:50 to 4:45. Steve Prefontane’s mom called my mom one day and told her what Steve was doing, like running even in the snow. Good memories for sure.

Only about 1400 people have ever run under 4:00 for a mile, and the first was 65 years ago. Think about how many people have lived since 1954, come and gone, and you'll realize how small your chance of breaking four is. Look at him. He's naturally running 4:35 as a 15 year old. He had those rare genes.
