Nickelodeon never lets it’s creators win. Last time, we mostly discussed how it kills shows before they get a chance to succeed. This time, we’re going in the opposite direction…

I have actually made a solemn vow to never EVER work for either Netflix or Warner Bros. Discovery, both of which in my opinion have become the worst places for creators. I think we need more independent animators to rise and put the big companies in their place.

Agreed. Alot of studios outside of America are mostly independent. Like Xilam, Zinkia, Aardman, Splash Entertainment, Nelvana, ZagToon and Wildbrain. And heck, most of them are viewed to everyone on KZbin. Also they can air longer on different television networks whenever their rights from a previous channel expire.

Nickelodeon has been doing this practice since around 2004, every show that wasn't getting SpongeBob/FOP ratings got only 1 or 2 seasons and then shafted to Nicktoons Network. This is the list of all the victims: My Life as a Teenage Robot, ChalkZone, CatScratch, The X's, Harvey Beaks, Tuff Puppy, Making Fiends, Jimmy Neutron (in its later run), Its Pony, and All Grown Up.

I think “Taina” would make a great Vs. The Network episode. It focused on high school students at a performing arts school in NYC. It was notable at the time for featuring a predominantly POC cast. It aired for only 2 seasons in the early 2000s and was cancelled by Nick. I’ve heard various reasons for its cancellation. Some sources say that it was a very expensive show to produce, some sources say it was cancelled because the network thought the show only appealed to girls. When High School Musical and Camp Rock became hits, Nick revamped the premise of “Taina” to create “Victorious.”
@christianlech1084
@christianlech1084 Жыл бұрын
There was an article interviewing Christina Vidal, the actress who played the titular character. In it, she claims that she was never given a proper explanation for the show's sudden cancellation but said that the network told her Taina was going to be replaced by Romeo. She then suggested two possible things that may have led to the show's early demise despite high ratings. 1. Vidal signed on to a record label with MCA Records meaning her attention would've now been divided between doing music for MCA and Taina. I should note that the MCA deal never produced anything due to MCA going belly up shortly after the deal was signed and the new owners of the company wanting Vidal instead to lead a music group (she wanted to be a solo artist). 2. Vidal had a team on her side led by a mother and, by the sudden cancellation of Taina, included a lawyer. They were making sure Vidal's rights were being respected and that she wasn't being exploited like many child actors were at the time. While I should point out this is only Christina's hypothesis for Taina's cancellation, this idea of Nickelodeon not being content with live action child/young adult actors that are being protected from overexploitation by other lines up with Nat Wolff's explanation as to why The Naked Brothers Band, despite its commercial success, ended after its third season. Here is the link to the Vidal interview: www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/story/2021-06-13/latino-gap-christina-vidal-recounts-taina-role-nickelodeon

@@christianlech1084 thanks for sharing that article, that was an interesting read. I hope we get to see Christina Vidal in more projects. That point she made about Nick not wanting to work with young actors that couldn’t be exploited is damning. @@Divinemisssm5758 The thing I don't understand is that canning successful shows like Taina and The Naked Brothers Band because the actors couldn't be utilized to the extent Nick wanted doesn't even make financial sense. Both of these shows were near their way to possibly becoming major icons of the Nickelodeon pantheon and a limited number of new episodes wouldn't be a huge issue (they could've simply made each new episode a nigh-on event like they did for the remainder of SpongeBob S3 back in 2003 and 2004). Abruptly ending these popular shows instead of negotiating new content (even if not the extent Nick wanted) almost certainly lost Nick money in the short-term and long-term.

I always kinda assumed The Loud House killed Fairly Oddparents. After loud house became a huge hit it filled the place as Spongebob's 2nd fiddle and allowed FOP to finally end. Although FOP actually has gotten some continuations (live action spin-off and one animated in production). I feel like we should still give attention to new upcoming Nicktoons even if there doomed to a mere 2 seasons. Look forward to Rock, Paper, Scissors.

Surprised that Fairly Oddparents wasn't mentioned. That show was Nick's second biggest hit show, able to rival and sometimes overtake that of Spongebob. But Nick kept running it into the ground with those live action movies, more seasons, and that god AWFUL live action/animated sitcom reboot. And with ANOTHER reboot on the way, (This time animated) it seems that Nick will never learn and will be stuck in this never ending loop forever.

a lot of people don't know this, but Nickelodeon was first created in 1979 (1977 if you count Pinwheel, the original network that it used to be) back then their goal was clear, to make shows that are good for children. sure their first few years were rough but they clearly cared about what they were doing. this is the Nickelodeon I want back. also the iconic Nickelodeon jingles that they reuse were first made in the 80s.

Nickelodeon started off as Pinwheel TV on the QUBE Network service in Columbus,OH. Warner Amex Renamed it Nickelodeon and launched it as a Premium Cable PBS Knockoff on April 1,1979. Warner Amex also launched MTV 2 years later(Which got started as "Pop Clips") on Nickelodeon in 1980. But those first 5 years(1979-1984) were REALLY rough for Nickelodeon, so Warner Amex sold it AND MTV to Viacom Communications and its owner Father and Son Team Samuel "Summer"Redstone and Frank Redstone in November of 1983. In June 1984, Frank Redstone met MCA Television owner Dick Wolf and together with MTV's Private Equity Group Fred Alan,Inc(Named for MTV owners Fred Seibert and Alan Goodman) Viacom and MCA Television formed the IPO "MTV Networks,Inc" which was introduced on March 27,1985. Both Nickelodeon and MTV were managed and operated under the MTV Networks banner until May 29,1994. On March 22,1995, Viacom International got a NEW CEO, and Redstone was Ousted(Both Samuel and Frank). The NEW CEO, Herb Shelbert, successfully bid a 100% Stake and Share purchase of Nickelodeon,Inc which had spent the Better of 1994 Independently run after MTV and Nick split up. Viacom Now owned 100% of the Nickelodeon IP and Shelbert was determined to force ALL of the Redstone Properties of VH1 Communications,Comedy Central,Lifetime Television and MTV Networks into ONE Viacom Branded umbrella by buying them out one by one during 1996-1999. Both Fred Siebert and Alan Goodman QUIT in 1996 in protest as they were close friends with Frank Redstone.

TUFF Puppy is my 2nd favourite Nicktoon, and I am absolutely annoyed by the fact the show’s 3rd season was so short. That show had so much potential and has a big fanbase (Mostly from the furry community). I just wished the show got a proper full 3rd season and a later 4th season. Now our only hopes is to see if Dudley & Kitty would join a future Nickelodeon crossover game.

The same thing that is happening to The Loud House right now, happened with Fairly Oddparents. Where Nick wouldn't let it rest, until the show got flattout destroyed in Season 10. Then shortly after The Loud House arrived, Fairly Oddparents got shoved onto Nicktoons and i feel that what happened with The Fairly Oddparents is now happening with The Loud House. Your actually right about Nickelodeon being like this since their early years. The Ren & Stimpy Show was similarly screwed over by the network, aside from the censorship issues. During the Games era Nickelodeon basically tried to milk the show for all it's worth and commonly ordered too many episodes in a short time span, which led to many episodes being rushed out of production or being delayed, this especially made the writing and animation suffer. Games also had to outsource alot of the episodes to much cheaper and lesser quality production studios to make the deadline, such as most infamously Mr. Big Cartoons and Wang Productions. In fact there wasn't actually supposed to be a season 5, but the team were so behind schedule as Nick ordered too many episodes, so some of season 4 had to be split to another season to finish production. Nickelodeon were also very inconsistent about the content in the episodes, they would sometimes allow certain things to be in episodes that the network didn't like in another episode, the most infamous example of this being "A Dog's Life" which is moreso a rip off and a way worse, more one sided version of an episode they did ban, "Man's Best Friend". They would also sometimes force the writers to make Ren more aggressive and less sympathetic. I'm pretty sure a spokes person of Nick told the animators, "If we had a hit, do you think we'd slow things down and wait 8 weeks for a new episode?" which really goes to show how Nickelodeon's thought process is when it comes to how they treat their shows, especially when it comes to their big hits like SpongeBob Squarepants.

Bob Camp and Jim Gomez finally QUIT outright after 2 years of production in the Spring of 1995, Most of their Team realized that they just couldn't capture the SAME magic that John K and Spumco had first brought to it during R&S first two years, Games Animations was cutting so many corners(MANY of the things Kricfalusi surprisingly was RIGHT to protest, which is WHY he got fired by Nickelodeon in Early 1993, as they gave him a Clause that would have required him and his Team Especially Chris Riccardi to Outsource ALL work away from Spumco directly TO Games Animation). As Disturbed and Seriously ILL as he is as a person, John K was RIGHT in saying "NO" to working with Games Animations, its why he lost his creation, he wasn't fired for failing to meet deadlines, he went OVER the Heads of Nickelodeon and MTV Networks by flat out saying "Hell No, I will NOT work with Games Animations". Regarding "Man's Best Friend" it was BANNED before it got to air on Nickelodeon, but in the early Summer of 1993, MTV DID air and show this episode, alongside "Dog Show" which was also banned from Nick. People don't realize before the DISASTER known as the 2003 APC reboot, Ren and Stimpy got shown Uncut on MTV during '93 and "Jailhouse Blues" got an uncut airing on MTV in June 1993.

SpongeBob actually started production back in the mid 90s when it was called "SpongeBoy", but they had to change the name because a Pencil factory already uses that name. So they settled with "SpongeBob SquarePants" instead, and the first version of Help Wanted would air in 1997. Once that happened, it was actually pretty successful and as a result, they decided to turn it into a full series, and the pilot would be the very first episode to air. While the 1997 version has been found, the original "SpongeBoy" dub is currently lost. Tom Kenny himself has confirmed in a hard to find interview that the audio is real, and he even plans on releasing it once he gets permission from Nickelodeon

Casual viewer to the channel, and I admire the deep dive into the niche topics like forgotten TV shows or why certain shows flop or lost steam over time. If you guys take recommendations, I'd like to recommend Imaginary Mary, an ABC sitcom from 2017 about a woman reuniting with her imaginary friend Mary and wacky hijinks ensue. It never got past one season presumably due to low viewership, critical reception and how much it cost to make each episode. The show is also notorious for Mary's early test design that's EXTREMELY ugly.

Actually, I would say if Nickelodeon NEVER rejected Adventure Time for their channel to make Fanboy and Chum Chum, we wouldn’t be having this dilemma, along with some other show after creating The Mighty B, and the downfall to this entire channel in 2010 when they created Planet Sheen, which would also explain why people hate Dan Schneider when creating ICarly or Victorious, and gets worse after Sam and Cat, Henry Danger, and Game Shakers were aired. One more little detail, since I know Fairly OddParents became bad when seasons 9 and 10 happened, same issue with SpongeBob or whatever, I theorized that if the producers/animators of Nickelodeon, Disney Channel, and Cartoon Network weren’t so obsessed with the money and ratings, or thought the plots of the shows, movies, or episodes completely through, then maybe people wouldn’t feel either nostalgic or filled with hate. Plus, when discussing The Loud House in 4:40, I usually get the feeling they don’t even know what girls are anymore, I mean do they have to put 10, make all their names start with L, use literal examples of stereotypes, or probably make them act in a wild behavior because there are a few things that literally makes no sense to the female gender, and not to mention how I sometimes wished this show, and possible The Casagrandes, wasn’t so similar to Disney Channel’s Stuck in the Middle didn’t bother me so much, I also wished Lori was still around you know.

I’ve already stated this before in the comments of one of my videos talking about why I wrote _The Loud House: It’s Not the Same Anymore_ back on my friend’s channel since I didn’t have mine yet at the time, but I’ll say it again here, albeit with some slight edits. I’m not really blaming anyone who’s working in the show with where it is right now, it’s just that I’m a little scared that if someone working on the show listened to the Queen of Lions reading my story, they might not know what to think of it. As for Chris Savino, even if the allegations of what he did are still true, which I'm guessing they still could be at this point, it is also still true that you’re not forgiven right away for your actions *(depending on what they are)* . To make things worse, ever since Chris got fired, he has stated that he can't bring himself back to watch the show anymore, especially episodes that came out after his absence. According to TV Tropes in their own words, the very idea of Chris wanting to watch a show he created that he's no longer involved with is too depressing for him. And while a lot of people say Chris got what he deserved due to some misconducts, others say that doesn't change anything that the show started going downhill after he left. And yes, people also said he ruined the original Powerpuff Girls and Dexter's Laboratory, but that's most likely because he didn't understand those two shows. My guess is that he may have had some learning experiences as to not only understand what a show is, but also how to make one. So in Chris' defense, at the very least, he understood what the Loud House was since he created it. What's kind of ironic about you mentioning John Kricfalusi, the creator of Ren and Stimpy, is that it was the first show Chris ever worked on back when he was only 19 years old. In 2019, an audio recording of Chris talking in a church had come out. In it, he was telling everyone about him asking God to forgive him for what he's done. And he sounds really hurt by the tone of his voice, almost like he actually regrets it. He did say he was "very sorry and ashamed" back when the allocations happened, but even with that, he got suspended anyway. Here’s the link to where the audio recording is if you’re interested. www.cartoonbrew.com/artist-rights/with-jesus-by-his-side-fired-loud-house-creator-chris-savino-wants-to-make-a-comeback-180324.html Yes, what Chris did was very wrong and inappropriate, but the fact that it destroyed his career as an animator and that he can no longer bring himself back in a watching his own show because of it makes me kind of feel really bad for him. I know, when someone sexually harasses or assaults someone else, people usually feel sorry for the victims, and I do too, even though I wasn’t really aware of it since I didn’t get into the show until December of 2017. But like I just said, I also kind of feel sorry for him as well. Unfortunately, when this recording came out, some people commented on it by saying things like, “Nice try, Chris, but you’re not getting out of this easily.” Look, we get it, what he did was wrong and once again, you aren’t forgiven immediately. However, in my option, having people judge others for apologizing about some bad or outright horrible things they’ve done, even if they do sound legitimately sorry, is kind of unfair. And all of us are no exceptions. Bringing up past experiences that people either went through or caused, even if they actually apologize, doesn’t make anything better for them if they keep getting rubbed in their faces. Yes, we all need to own up for our mistakes, but we can’t judge others in any way, even if they think they can get out of whatever they did. At least that’s what I think. To sum it all up, if there are people who do feel actually sorry for what they’ve done to the point that it really hurts them, don’t let others treat you unfairly. You can be forgiven for your actions, but it takes some time, and I think Chris is still trying to get there. Sincerely, CJB Studios.

I feel kinda torn on what I've seen on post-movie 2 SpongeBob. On the one hand, I'm glad they've moved away from the melodramatic, dry, and sluggish pacing that a lot of post-movie 1 episodes suffered from, but it seems like an over-correction. Whenever I see or hear about the more recent seasons, it's usually either how strange it's gotten or the freaky face gags. And sure, both of these have been a part of the show since the golden years, but they weren't the only things that made the show so funny back then. I feel like a lot of it was also in it's dialogue, given how so many (myself included) still quote are favorite lines from the show. But maybe there's still some really witty or well-written episodes of the show that I just haven't seen or heard about yet. I haven't properly watched a lot of these newer seasons and I know even the post-movie 1 era, there was still some decent or even great episodes of the show. I know at least their stage musical was solid, since I watched that when it aired on Nick and loved it, and the recent game had some funny moments (could've done without some of the gross-up close-ups though...). I will say, though, that I am getting kinda tired of how reliant the franchise (not just the show, but also things such as the merchandise or the games) gotten on callbacks and referencing it's memes. I understand why they're doing this, since it'll get people talking about the show and the merchandise using the memes seems to be doing well-enough to continue, but it just comes off as such a lazy way to keep attention on the show and ends up hurting some of those classic moments. Like them turning the "My Leg" guy into an actual, recurring character.

Even though I could care less about the show and didn't even have any idea that a real life adaptation existed until I got to 6:02 in this video, the fact that they didn't give the live-action version of Lincoln white hair makes me unreasonably angry. I don't know why. Maybe because they were so utterly faithful when it came to the hair colors of literally EVERY OTHER live action version of every character shown in the poster, aside from the MAIN one?

I know this may sound like a rather odd comparison, but the way Nickelodeon treats its animated shows kinda feels like how the Marvel Cinematic Universe treats its female characters. The female characters they mistreat ended up getting sidelined, screwed over, or even worse... KILLED OFF abruptly! (i.e. Gamora, Black Widow, Scarlet Witch, Maria Hill) while the female characters they treated well end up becoming annoying, obnoxious, unlikable, and overpowered Mary-Sues (i.e. Captain Marvel and She-Hulk). The fact that you told show creators to avoid Nickelodeon would be the same kind of advice I would tell any female actress in Hollywood to stay away from Marvel Studios. If these actresses want to become part of a mega successful movie franchise, they should join other movie franchises. (Heck, I would rather have some of these actresses join something like the Sonic The Hedgehog movie franchise) because like how you said that Nickelodeon is the worst place for show creators, I honestly feel like the MCU is the worst movie franchise for female characters. Not trying to come off as woke or anti-woke or anything like that, I'm just saying.

If you’re doing more vs the network next year, then you could do one on comedy, Central or ren and Stimpy. (Believe me in terms of animation comedy Central is as bad as Nickelodeon since the only original animated show that still gives them profit is South Park. by the way, I don’t hate South Park, I do really enjoy the show…. well, the first 15 seasons at least.)

As a big Nickelodeon fan, like I’ve loved the channel as long as I remembered. It hurts, it hurts so much to see how bad of a company Nickelodeon is. To the point where pitching a cartoon to them feels like stepping into war Their scumminess gets so bad that some people go ahead and say they were never good. On the business sides of things I agree but shows wise I think they were great, even if with a lot of the cartoons they screwed over Even my favourite Nicktoons Invader Zim and My Life as a Teenage Robot got screwed over I honestly wish I could to a different universe where they didn’t screw over so many cartoons and had a consistent library of cartoons they didn’t screw over and actually treated well and didn’t milk. Like Cartoon Network I use to always defend them but now I cringe as I don’t like what I was talking about I will always love Nickelodeon and their shows and they’re still my favourite but as a company I don’t like them

It's sad actually. Nickelodeon originally made a name for themselves and exploded in popularity in the 90s by treating kids with respect all while promoting shows that catered directly to what they actually respond to like goofy/gross humor and the feeling of being misunderstood by adults. The reason the network is in such dire straits today is because they completely abandoned their original mission statement. They no longer respect or even care about kids and only see them as potential customers to sell their SpongeBob merch to. The show is nearly 30 years old! That's absolutely insane. If anyone is likely to try to pull a Simpsons and refuse to end it it'd without a doubt be Nickelodeon.

ALL GROWN UP might had upset a bunch of a Rugrats fans, But I still believe it was a good concept, NOBODY LIKED THE FOP Live Action spin off series, It was a like a bucket of salt in the stab wound, The cartoon was more dead that zombie SIMPSONS.

Okay, so, I know Rugrats being very popular and all, but Ren and Stimpy were the ones that started it all. Ren and Stimpy at first, being the most popular on Nickelodeon due to gross out humor, classic art style, music and formula that can be found in Looney Tunes, Walter Lantz and MGM Cartoons. They're WERE the first cash cows of Nickelodeon. But when John Kricfalusi got fired, things started go downhill in season 3. They're were desperate to keep the show running until season 5 where it didn't worked out anymore, and then Rugrats took over the popularity. You see, Ren and Stimpy were ones that put Nickelodeon where it is today in the first place. Without it, Rugrats wouldn't be as popular as it was, or we wouldn't have SpongeBob or The Loud House being cash cows. Again, I’ll say that Ren and Stimpy being the first cash cows to Nickelodeon, but I couldn't blame the show for it. But regardless, Ren and Stimpy deserves more than Rugrats, as the one that started it all.

Good Loud House is Season 1-4. After that, the show went very downhill. I dislike that they abandoned realism. The show always had cartoony moments but they were always quick gags that didn't impact the plot. Now you have plots like Lucy ghost-hunting with her friends. That plot would be more fitting for Gravity Falls than Loud House of all things. I love over the top unrealistic plots but you should do that from day one like American Dad did. You can't just change the tone halfway through. I like how the other siblings get more focus but they always focus on one at a time. They rarely pair the sisters up. They are supposed to be related to each other yet they hardly talk to each other.

Oh boy, are there more misses than hits: Disney's Doug, All Grown Up, Pre School Daze, Adult Party Cartoon, Planet Sheen, Fairly Odder, Kamp Koral, and The Casagrandes. I think the only one, in my opinion, that is really good but flaw is The Legend of Korra. Please Nickelodeon don't screw up the Avatar franchise. Oh yeah then there's the Hey Arnold spinoff The Patakis which was scrapped because Nick thought it was too mature for them.
