Although the final product is in my opinion the better deal by a WIDE margin, I do think this initial concept for the game was interesting in and on itself. So after Ico, horned boys would no longer be sent to some castle in the mist for sacrifice, but would eventually have become a badass equestrian and nomadic tribe hunting down these giant beasts wandering the steppes? You gotta admit, that's a cool concept! Of course, I can't envision a dramatic story with this kind of setting, at least not one nearly as good as Shadow of the Colossus ended up having. The twisting idea that the monsters are not the bad guys but you are is brilliant, yet I don't see how they could've developed it with this premise. Maybe that's why Ueda decided to change it afterwards. I say good call on his part.

I think I read somewhere that Fumito Ueda actually planned on having multiplayer just like in this prototype where you and your friends could take down colossi. I think the idea was scrapped though due to time constraints and the technical challenge. The Last Guardian is rumored to have some kind of online component to it, whether or not that is multiplayer, I'm interested in finding out soon.

This was the idea behind SotC. It obviously changed as we have SotC today and not NICO. I wouldn't be surprised if they tried something along these lines with the third installment to the series though. I cant wait. :)

I really like more of the way the colossis' look like in the final game though :D But the idea that there are gang of those riders is kind a cool, but dont know how the story would then go.. Lonely rider idea is still so much more intensive and also legendary :D

I think they would have to change the story dramatically. One way I personally envision it is like this: These giant wandering mountains are the source of an ever increasing plague that's threatening all the plains and beyond. A plague of darkness. Shadowy forms (similar to the ones in Ico) start appearing in villages and camps at night, attacking anything and anyone. Those who don't die are dragged down into the shadowy abyss never to be seen again. While fighting them off is not impossible, it is never the solution, as the shadows simply return on the following night with the same numbers they did prieviously, regardless of how many of them you and your people dispatched prieviously. These nightmarish forms have their origins in gigantic beasts who seem made out of earth and stone. They wander the plains endlessly, never stopping, never sleeping, always moving from one camp to another, crushing anything that stands in their way. THAT is the source. The only way to trully push back the darkness is to fell these beasts. And so, you set out with your horse and whatever companions you can recruit along the way to hunt down these giants and spare the land of the clutches of darkness forever. There's more or less the initial summary of what the story could be like, or at least the start of it. But of course, we'd have to search for a way to add a twist to it, because as it is, I won't lie, it sounds hella generic. :P

Yeah, it's been confirmed by the creator that SotC is prequel to Ico set some unknown time before Ico and that Wander is the start of the line of horned children. Then again, he's also said that that's only his impression of the story and it shouldn't be taken as absolute fact.

I think multiplayer SotC wouldn't be as much of a masterpiece. It wouldn't have the same atmosphere as SotC. Being a lone hero, with just a horse with you. Then feeling overwhelmed when you fight a 200foot creature all by yourself. In a multiplayer SotC, the game wouldn't feel that way. Being with 3 other people slaying Colossi wouldn't feel as overwhelming.

Yes, at the moment some people are calling it Trico (since SotC was once Nico) We have absolutely no idea what it's about or even what it looks like, other than the chain the poster above me stated) I heard it will come out four years after SotC did since the developers took four years to make Ico and four years to make SotC. Totally agree, but i dunno about the RPG thing. I think it was one of those rare games that defys genre classification. Quite simply, it was a beautiful game, and it would be great if the released it on the PSN, like they did with Tekken 5.
