My Talk with World Renown Unit Still Photographer and Portrait Artist Nicola Dove.
Originally from New Zealand, Nicola began her career as a photographer, traveling the world documenting the work of charities and aid organisations, before specialising in film stills and portraits.
Based between NZ and the UK, she regularly works with some of the worlds best directors and actors, most recently shooting the stills for the latest Bond film, No Time To Die.
Her other credits include Murder On The Orient Express, Artemis Fowl, The Inbetweeners Movie, Death Of Stalin, and many more.
She has recently established the Film Stills Academy, an online training resource for people interested in becoming film stills photographers.
When not on set she will be found playing on the beach with her two children, Tom and Stella, or touring with her family in a VW van.

Thank you for this, and all of your extraordinary interviews and 5 Photo Folios, Jasin. Your enthusiasm, brilliant imagery, and generosity of spirit toward your fellow world-class colleagues are inspiring and invaluable. I've learned so much over the past few months. Nicola, your work is breathtaking, and we are fortunate for your generous insights and candor. I’m thrilled for your upcoming academy. Incidentally, and serendipitously, today (Halloween!) in NYC, while bicycling downtown from Central Park to Union Square, at the Omega watch store on Fifth Avenue between 56th & 55th Street, I saw what I believe was a masterful portrait of yours, Nicola, of Daniel Craig as Bond in No Time to Die, dominating the window facing 5th Ave. At that moment, while waiting for the light to change, a taxi crossed the ave, crowned with your magnificent image of Mulan, Jasin, flowing hair suspended and jian sword poised above her. I wish I’d been photographing or video recording that moment (but wanted to survive the bike trip!) Kudos, and thank you both!

Thank you again Jason, for all of these Unit Stills Photography interviews and insights you have been posting! There's almost nothing out there for us who are relatively new. That Academy that Nicola has established sounds great! It's quite an expedition just to dig up any info at all without interviews like these. It's such a solo journey to learn. Thanks again Much appreciated.

Re the 'editing' aspect of the work... No complaints from me. I actually like the 'editing' phase because I learned to adjust to schedules, fine-tuning/streamlining my workflow, quality and efficiency of my submissions to the publicist/producer. It's the time I get to study how I shoot, too, and what/how to shoot for next time. My turnaround has been much better and I feel more well-rounded for it.

Was the scan method the reason the first images seem so soft?
@JasinBoland

Hi Roy. Nicola goes very deep into the thought pattern of her exhibition in the video. All the exposures were 15 seconds. It’s super interesting if you have time to watch our chat.

@@JasinBoland Nicola is much tougher than me - I couln't go back to film let alone medium or large format. I wasn't critisising - I was just curious. I've got great respect for photogs less lazy than myself...
@JasinBoland
@JasinBoland 3 жыл бұрын
Roy I totally understand I wasn’t sure if you had time to listen to the process. 15 seconds is a long time and the softness you see was intentional. Nicola will most likely explain it herself for you.
