In February of 2024 I went magnet fishing with the @PeakyDippers and @Sifinds in the historical town of Windsor, and my first experience at it was SO SO fun and VERY exciting. I must have had beginner's luck as I pulled out what turned out to be one of the rarest of its kind, according to the magnet fishing expert Glen of @PeakyDippers. Also, in this video I see an extremely mysterious find which one of the dippers, Marie, discovered on her magnet! We are really not sure what it is all about so maybe one of you can help! I wasn't sure what to expect at all when I threw the magnet in the river, but by the end of the day I was hooked. Find out what we found in the river here in this video- and let me know what your favourite find is.
Please note that magnet fishing is not allowed in the tidal Thames. The area where we were is the non tidal Thames. All historical artefacts are reported to the museum. All scrap is tidied away by a scrap merchant and there are procedures to follow if you find ordnance.
Thank you to Glen, Marie, Mike, Kirsty, Alison and Rusty for a fabulous day.
The Peaky Dippers support the Acorns Charity www.acorns.org.uk. See link below for the toy drive mentioned in the video:-

Your heavy item appears to be a vintage farm tractor weight. Made of cast iron, several of these are hung on a rack, usually at the front of the tractor, to add weight and stability. One of my old tractors uses weights that are very similar to the one you found.

Very clever, Mick. I was going to say some kind of counter weight for a door or window but a tractor weight seems quite likely.

Absolutely awesome video, I wish my week started off good. I have a 93 year old father that has dementia, who took off with no shoes and no jacket early Friday morning in 20 something Degree weather. Well, he's now in the hospital recovering from moderate hypothermia. But other problems have happened like kind of infections. And keeps trying to remove IVs and Catheters. Well, things are not looking good for a recovery, he's stopped eating and things are looking grim. Tomorrow we meet with the hostice people, very sad. This video put a smile on my face! Thank you, Nicola, thank you Peakys, for it. Thanks again you guys in the UK.

I think the "big" unidentified thing is a boat anchor for a small boat on a river, perhaps?
@DickHolman
@DickHolman 3 ай бұрын
I think that's too much anchor for a small boat, & isn't quite the right dimensions. In general, a 15-20 kg anchor & a 9-10m chain of 10-15kg is used on narrow boats below Richmond (tidal Thames).

Thanks for a wonderful time out. Your caring for your supporters and all things environmental is heartwarming. I have followed you from the very early days and seen how mudlarking has grown to professional videos like you produce now and how this community has grown phenomenally in the past 8 years or so. It's remarkable at how professional the hobby has become as well as the history being preserved. More awareness by people like you has been created in assisting to educate people in responsible mudlarking etc. Declaring finds is so important and the PLO monitoring permits has helped to maintain responsible larking. Do keep well and sure you are looking forward to spring time.

Hi Nicola!! So great to see your beautiful smile and hear your lovely voice. I really got a kick out of you, showing us how strong the magnet was,😂 when it kept taking the coin back out of your hand. It's so interesting when you think of all the history that's in that water. Cannonballs, daggers, that cool old key, the boat disks/license (Sorry, I can't remember the name of it.) and all sorts of things. And who knows maybe Cinderella's glass slipper!!😃 There's one thing that I've found that all muddlers and magnet fishers have and that's great personalities and very friendly but most of all they have fun doing what they do. The group is always laughing and I think that's terrific!!😂😂 I thought you did very well on your first day of magnet fishing, way to go!! Bad for Simon for losing his magnet. It Hass to be magnet when you think it's just stuck on something that you were trying to bring out of the water. I enjoyed the video very much and I look forward to your next one. Have a great week Nicola!!😍😍🥰🥰 It's 1:41am and I just finished making this comment but I'm sick in bed with a bad cold. My son had a fever yesterday and was coughing and we were so hoping it wasn't Covid and it wasn't so that's great. Hopefully it won't stay around for very long.💖💖

Here's a hypothetical metal clay pipe suggestion. A fisherman/sailor wearing heavy gloves in inclement weather might accidentally crush his clay pipe in the gusty winds or work environment. So, to fix the problem, he wanted a solid pipe and if it gets the bowl hot, maybe all the better?

Nicola, I just started watching, so maybe I'll catch up as the video goes on, but... do you understand most of what your magnet-fishing pals are saying? I turned on my cc, and it isn't doing much better than I am... (It is entertaining, though 😂) I obviously need to get more practice listening to other Englishes! It's so nice to see Si there! I was actually thinking of him because the last time I had such a hard time understanding everyone was when he went out mudlarking one time with his school pals. It was great fun, but I had no idea what was going on. Anyway, I've babbled on enough. So happy to see you & and Si. I've been away for too long. Cheers & much love to all from Seattle!

@@nicolawhitemudlark YOU don't need to do anything. 😁 My CC and I need to get out more & interact with folks who don't speak the exact same kind of English we do. It is so much fun though to see in writing, thanks to my CC, the confusion that is simultaneously occurring in my head. Sometimes, though, the CC guesses differently than I do. I came across your videos about a month ago and have been thoroughly enjoying each and every one. I just watched one from a couple years ago where you gave away one of your green glass fish and the woman that won lives here in the Midwest of the United States and her sentiments were the same as mine, that you've inspired her to try her hand at mud larking. Unfortunately, I live in the Finger Lakes of NY, so the tides don't go out, but I do occasionally search the shorelines, one time finding a silver and turquoise ring. I love your back stories on the history of the objects you find. I've borrowed my dad's metal detector a couple of times and I once found a coin from the mid 19th century on the property we used to live on. I checked a giant antique map of the area that was in our local inn and saw the name of the gentleman that lived there many years ago. It was nice to make some kind of connection between the coin and its possible history. I also commend you and your fellow mud larkers for being such good stewards of the earth, not only finding your treasures, but also removing the plastics and other detritus from the Thames, creating art from pieces and shards, and sharing them with the world. I am a big believer in making new from old and not constantly buying new. Bravo!! 👏👏

What a fun outing at an interesting location. I found Windsor Castle fascinating when I visited, highly recommended. I didn't have time to explore the town though. The swan paddling fast in the swift water was great. Thanks Nicola! 🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼

Thank you for the joy you bring to my home, and for always asking how we all are. Because you said it would be ok to say we are not ok, I will be brave enough to say I am frightened for my future as my health becomes ever more complex and my mood ever lower. Thank you again for simply bringing all the subjects I adore, together in each of your videos. If I had it, I would gift thousands, but I hope this tiny gift will help you continue doing what you love, and I get so much pleasure in watching. 🖌️🎨👩🏻‍🎨🥰

*Nicola 🙂 Wow you were getting some great finds from that river and also hanging out with some awesome & wonderful folks.. I reckon when the tide goes out... if it does in that area, that you should pop back down there and get Si's magnet.. 🙂nz*
