I'm not sure how I knew there was something there under the mud! It must have been a sixth sense. I'm glad I followed my intuition. Join me as I find weird and wonderful artefacts that have been submerged in mud for almost a century! The people who discarded this lot would laugh if they knew how excited we were to find their secret stash of treasures they no longer wanted!
Thank you to David Nolan without whom this excursion would not have been possible!

The 'jug' you left behind was a shaving mug and they were still quite common in my dad's day. He was born in 1904 and we had several of them at home in my childhood during the 1950s. A special round shaving soap sat in the bit with the holes, so that when you were finished the soap would drain off any water into the bottom of the mug. Hot water went into the other side and the brush was dipped into that, then the soap and lathered up on the face. Then the razor followed, safety or cut-throats, to be rinsed. Shave over it was cleaned up and put on the shelf for next time. What some really fabulous finds. Well worth being excited about! Don't ask me to pick a favourite. They are all brilliant.

This community on Nicola's and other Mudlarking KZbin channels never ceases to amaze and delight me with the depth and breadth of knowledge and SHARING IT. It doesn't matter that a shaving mug was an ordinary, commonplace item (Although I know they got very fancy, humorous, personalized, etc.). All these items - tobacco tin, re-imagined porcelain Grecian Lady, plate shard - come alive and somehow become utterly fascinating to me. Thanks for sharing!! ~West Virginia, USA

Here on Kauai we have a special type of shell called a Sunrise Shell. It was recently deemed a semi precious stone. After 30 years of searching the shorelines, both my mother and I have trained our brains to see even a tiny chip of a Sunrise Shell. They have a particular color, certain shaped ridges and a certain size, and are completely different from all other shells on our beaches. Im telling you this because I am sure all your years of mudlarking has trained your brain, even subconsciously, to seek manmade outlines, symmetry, and colors of porcelain or metal. It’s marvelous to see you discover treasures lying there in the mud . Come visit Kauai and I will show you all my secret spots! Aloha!

The eye does get trained. I could spot an Agate out of millions of pebbles on our beaches when I lived right next to the ocean. As far as seeing familiar, man made, or human shapes there is a bit of a psychological phenomena that humans exhibit. It's called Pareidolia. It is a psychological phenomenon that causes people to see patterns in random stimuli. You see faces in clouds, things that look like animals, shapes in clouds etc. we all possess this ability. 😊💕

Hello Nicola, I recognise the donkey, my mum had one exactly the same in her china cabinet, her's had "A Gift from Rhyll," written across the bit underneath the donkey, it was a Donkey Barometer spill holder, and it had a string tail , with a list of weather on the tall part behind the donkey, ie, if tail wet - Rain, if tail moves - Windy, if tail can't be seen - Fog, and so on, the last one being if tail falls off - Earthquake 😅 I wish I still had mum's one, Thank you for giving me a trip down memory lane 😊 Best wishes from Yorkshire 😊

If you watch the pottery throw down you will see the potters making the exact object. Love that you found it intact. Not broken..you put the soap at the top, put your shaving brush to lather it up and away you go. I remember shaving my Nonno with a cut throat razor, I was little, scary, but I did it, he must have trusted me. You had to pull the skin up and shave at the same time. That brought back a memory locked way at the back of my brain. Thank you. Love where you are, wonderful finds ❤❤❤😂😂

The small figure top right of the four photographs is a snow baby. It appears to be sitting beside an igloo. Snow babies like this were usually 1 to 3 inches tall. They were covered with bits of ground white porcelain to give them a snowy look. I collect the originals from around 1910. There is a fascinating history about them to look up. Just what you like Nicola. If you want to look them up, a great source is Mary Morrison who is a fantastic source of correct information. The Santa Bottom left is carrying a lantern, I have this one myself. I love your mud larking and have always loved the thought of doing it myself. Hi, Nicola. Susan here. Funny you should have found the milk bottle, as Si (Finds) found the same one in his video last week. I know he thought the first name was amusing, but here in North America, fanny is another name for your backside (hence the term "fannypack" for your bum bag). My favourite find would definitely be the Allsopp's, as it was a cool find, and researchable, too! My favourite shots were the sunset and the wildlife on the return journey. I also enjoyed the MOLA video earlier this week - how great to get two videos in one week! Since we've had over 3 feet of snow, then 2 inches of rain in the last two weeks, I welcome anything that helps me through the long months of a Canadian winter! Much appreciated!
