Imagine you're Ken Miles, 60 years ago, driving a 1964 FIA 289 Shelby Cobra on the racetrack. Nicole joins Cobra icon Lynn Park at Willow Springs International Raceway as a guest of the Cobra Owners Club, where Nicole experiences solo driving the legendary one-of five, 450-horsepower race car. For comparision, Lynn and son Steve offer Nicole another bucket-list thrill-a 500+ horsepower 2010 Special Competition Continuation 427 Shelby Cobra. Emboldened with a new Simpson fire suit, Nicole experiences the difference in throttle response, gearing, and torque on the track.
Check out EPISODE 20, featuring Lynn's mind-blowing collection of ORIGINAL COBRAS: • ORIGINAL COBRAS Part 1...
MORE ABOUT LYNN PARK: Lynn's long-time relationship with Carroll Shelby and Shelby American began in 1962. Now a legend in his own right, Lynn is today's living authority on Shelby Cobras, owning more than 50 originals over 6 decades. Lynn and his two sons, Steve and Tim, regularly race three 289s from the collection and can be seen at historic vintage racing events around the country.

My dad had a chance to buy a 289 Cobra from a guy who was going through a divorce in the '60's. He chose to buy his shop instead. He believed 289 Cobra as a car was the perfect blend of power, weight, and balance. 60 years later and the Cobra is still a benchmark automobile.

My first experience with a Cobra was the Gumball Rally movie back in 1976 when I was 16. I was hooked. A couple years later, friends and I went to a huge car auction at the Seattle Coliseum. Wandering around Porsches, Ferraris and other European exotics was great fun. And then my dream came true, there it was, a blue 427 Cobra. It creates such an emotion inside of me to this day. In fact, 3 days ago, 3 replicas drove down Main Street of Bozeman Montana and my heart started beating a bit faster. The only other to get my heart beating like that is my beautiful wife! Great video as always Cheers! Cheers!

Nicole, this video was AMAZING. Back when I was a Sr. in High School (1965) I went to a Cobra Dealer on Broadway near Downtown in San Antonio Texas. I was 'drooling' on a 427 Cobra when one of the Sales guys came out to talk, I guess he figured I had a rich dad...anyway in our discussion about the car he popped me a question I will never forget. "Do you want to go for a ride in this car?" He said he was taking it out for a spin as it had sat for about a week and he wanted to exercise it. I couldn't get the YES out of my mouth any faster! He drove it out the door to the showroom and I climbed in to the passenger seat. We went down Broadway and turned to get up on the nearby highway. I'll never forget the acceleration, the car was a Beast! I've had several fast rides since then, Mustang Cobras, Camaro's, and a 1972 Black Norton Motorcycle Commando Combat (which did a sub 12 second quarter mile, 11.72 sec, 148 Mph) but nothing ever felt as powerful as the Cobra. Back then they were priced under $4000, if only I could get one for that today. I retired at the end of 2020 and I've been thinking of getting a Replica (can't afford an original). This video gives me the Urge!!! Thanks Again for reviving my memories! By the way, Carol Shelby came to Randolph Air Force Base for a celebration, can't remember the year, he was an enlisted pilot, one of the few during WW II. I got his autograph in one of my Ford Mustang Books and the Picture of him signing it. That was amazing as well!

I remember reading a story some years ago. Could've been posted here on YT. Commenter's dad was a Ford High Performance salesman at a Ford dealer. A dentist came in saying he wanted to test drive and buy a 427 cobra. His dad steered him toward a 289 cobra but the dentist was adamant he wanted the 427 and wouldn't take no for an answer. So he agreed, but first he was going to take him for a test ride in a 427. When they got back the dentist was noticeable shaken and said, "I think you're right. I probably need to check out the 289 cobra" to which his dad said, "This is the 289 cobra." lol

The 1964 FIA 289 is an absolute beauty, there's something so pure and soulful about every scratch, nick, and wear spot on that car. @jimcabezola3051 Yes, the mk III Cobra with the 427 engine changed to coil over shocks all round in 1965 -- 55 years before the Corvette 😅 The front transverse leaf spring is the reason the engine is back behind the front axle -- making the car technically mid-engined.

You have great taste in cars!! I’m Building a Untouched barn find 1972 Trans Am with a racing history. It still has tire marks on it from racing. The more I come across these unrestored rare cars, worn with perfections; the more I realize I am happy I decided to not restore it and build it back mechanically sound. Cheaper to do, and less stressful as you don’t care if it’s not perfect. I don’t even mind if I make my own tool marks, as it adds to car’s history. I was forced to add a shine new master cylinder and booster, and I already miss the patina of the old one. Keep the awesome videos coming-

That is so BADASS! I have a 2004 CTS-V with the same power but I’m not ashamed to say this as my daily is a diesel Ram truck, I’m afraid to run it without traction control. I’ll put it in competition mode every once in a while but I’m not half the driver you are! The day I bought it it rained all the way home, about an hour of pure white knuckles and that’s with all the bells and whistles. Taking that thing home would’ve needed a trailer. It’s not only men that have balls/talent. Love the show!

I, too, love the responsiveness of the small block Ford V-8. Your video definitely captures the spirit of both big and small block Shelby-AC Cobras, and kudos to you and your team for this excellent presentation. Not being kin to the Rockefeller family, I bought my Cobra replica kit in 1987...took 3.5 years to complete as I paid cash along the way. Even worked several part-time jobs to buy parts and worked on friend's cars to help finance my "dream"...never took a penny out of the household budget. Every nut and bolt I put on the car and rebuilt the engine myself, but I did not rebuild its Toploader 4-speed or the 3.50 Traction-Lok rear end. Being a "soldier in the war on poverty", I even squirted the paint on the car myself. Museum quality? Nope. Concours winner? Not even close! Car was built to be driven and not a garage queen. Most fun part of the build process was the circle of friends which was created. We called ourselves the Cobra Clan. I surrounded myself with friends (Ford enthusiasts, electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical engineers, etc.) who knew more than I. When there were questions about each step, they were there to offer their advice. If two of them agreed, that was the pathway forward. Strange as it may seem, when I took my completed creation for its inaugural drive which was exhilarating, I was left with an empty feeling as I sat on the garage floor against the closed garage door. I was full of emotions as I listened to the hot metal "tinking" as it cooled and smelling the off gassing of the painted engine and side pipes. Popping open my first beer I tried to take inventory of these emotions. Upon opening the second beer, it finally struck me. It was the journey (build process), not the destination! No wonder why so many gearheads build a custom car, sell it at a loss, only to repeat the process.

AGAIN. You did it AGAIN. Bringing to the screen a memory I was lucky enough to have and participate in 30+ years ago! I was able to go to a Cobra meet in the late 80's at Willow. There WAS a F.I.A 289 there with no windscreen, webers, all as it should be. I hung around it a lot, helped turn wrenches and was blessed with a ride along session. WOW. My full face helmet that I "used" to think was too tight... tries to leave my head and air all around at 140mph and no windshield. So Great! Not sure if was Lynn or or who.. may have been a gent that lived in Vista , CA at the time. Keep it up!

I just watched your video on driving a couple of Cobras at Willow Springs. Funny, a coworker of mine in 1969 (we worked together at the very first Porsche- Audi dealerships in CA.) owned one of those factory Cobras. Really, In 1969, I had just started racing in Porsche Owners Club Time Trials with my 1966 Porsche 911. My coworker's name was Tony Bwano O'Sullivan. Instead, I wound up selling my 911 and going to work in Germany for Porsche in their Tourist Delivery division. I would walk Americans and English through the factory and then deliver them their new Porsche. Great job. I was all Porsche. When I returned home after 1 year (German Visa Issues), I purchased a used 1964 Porsche Carrera Cab. (God, I wished I owned that car today. It's worth close to one million) when I came back home instead of going back to racing in Porsche Time Trials or even starting racing Porsches in SCCA. No, not me. I traded the Porsche Carrera for a Formula B car (worth about $4,500 back then). I jumped in with both feet. 1971 was my first year racing SCCA. Of course, my first time on track driving was at Willow Springs and Riverside Raceway. I turned Pro in 1972. In 1973-1975 I moved to England to Race in the two different Formula Atlantic series. (PS I lived on James Hunts Couch for two weeks when I first arrived courtesy of a friend, who knew him). Back then, Formula 3 or Formula Atlantic were the main feeder series to F2 or Formula 1. I was in My car almost every day of the week, either testing at one of the 11 different tracks in England or racing at them. I have some great stories. Anyways I learned so much in racing there. Mind-boggling, in fact. I moved back to CA because I had a full factory drive with the Chevron Factory Distributor. Unfortunately, besides working out every day in the gym, I also raced Pro 250cc Motocross (Moto X) to stay in shape. Unfortunately, I got hit in a race and broke my Femur. 2.5 years of recovery, I lost my big career-changing Drive. During my recovery, I brought my 2 Formula Atlantic Cars back to CA from England to sell them. A guy I knew wanted to rent them. I thought he was crazy and said NO. No one had ever done that back then. Well, he finally convinced me to do it. It was one of the best decisions of my life. With my coaching and his paying, we won everything in Club racing Ok, he had some talent. At the end of the year, I sold the cars for so much more money because of our success. Most important, it paid all my medical bills and allowed me to buy newer cars. I continued to rent my services and cars for a couple of years while I healed. Well, as smart as renting and couching was, going back to driving was the dumbest. I went from making a great deal of money to losing a great deal of money. I have never regretted my decision. I have had a great time and so many great stories racing in the Pro Atlantic Series and Indy cars. The point of all this is I have about 5,000 miles (mostly testing) at Willow. Oh, I still own one of my Indy cars. A 1996 Lola. The main point of this is I noticed your lines around Willow, and in most cases, you are right on, except for turn three up the hill and down the hill and a huge amount of time lost in turn 9. 99% of most drivers lose huge amounts of time in turn 9. I've gone through there at 166 MPH. My best time was in 1993 in my Atlantic car (Testing My new Swift DB4 at 1.13.2). In 1998 ln, my Indy car I've turned a 1.08.3 in testing. To me, turn 9 is such a high when done right. In my Atlantic car, I'm flat out. Clearly, I'm not flat in the Indy car, but still a lot faster than the Atlantic car. If you would like to contact me I’m Ted. My e-mail is ted@alifesaver.com

My Dad was a Rocket Engineer and Team Manager at Cape Canaveral from '57 thru '76 with GE Aerospace but he took a couple year break and took the Sales and Service Manager job for the Shelby cars at Heintzelman Ford in downtown Orlando i believe in '65 - '67. I heard him tell this story several times as a young boy at backyard BBQ's and cocktail parties: a dentist walks into the showroom and tells the receptionist he is interested in a 427 Cobra, he is directed to my Dad. My Dad speaks with him for several minutes to judge is driving experience and financial wherewithal and suggests the 289 would be a better option. The dentist insists he wants the 427 so my Dad asks him to have a seat in the showroom and he would prep one and bring it around for a test drive. My Dad pulls up out front and takes the dentist on a very "sporty" test drive. When they get back to the showroom the dentist, who is white as a ghost, gets out and announces that perhaps my dad is right, he should consider the 289 afterall. To which my Dad replies, That was the 289.

A lot of men and women love good things. And understanding what makes a car tick and good mechanics is one of that. We all hate the new cars with plastic covers under the hood and arcade like dashboards that are simply dangerous. (Because they distract.).
