What great voices by singers who didn't need to run their voices all over and up and down the scales to express themselves. And Rosemary Clooney! She looked hotter here in 1960 at 32 than she did in 1954 at 26!

Rosemary started her singing career here in Cincinnati Ohio. Rosemary sang on the Ruth Lyons 5050 Club on WLWT Cincinnati. Nick Clooney Was a personally on the Television he was Newman on WKRC TV. His son George Actor. Rosemary and Bing on White Christmas. That was a great show. The production was tremendous.

These variety shows attempted to provide a break, a time of pure entertainment amidst the lives of ordinary, working (and otherwise) people. The goal was to present these talented people in their best light, i.e. grooming, delivery, sharing of their gifts, positive interactions among them, and sheer musical delivery. No need for vulgar sexual demonstrations, no screaming, no grinding, no "wardrobe malfunctions', just the projection of an amiable demeanor, talent, beauty, class, and sincerity. They garnered positive attention, not the fulfillment of needs which should have been met by parents and elementary/middle school teachers and peers but apparently weren't.

Amen to that. My guess, and it's only my take, is that later generations probably grew up watching absurdity and they are unable to distinguish between talent and the ridiculous.

I recall as a small kid coming up in the 60s there were a lot of variety shows on television. I thought real life was like that. And to my horror, I found out that life wasn't like that at all.

From Melrose Park, Illinois, where she grew up about seven minutes from my home, Carol was a great dancer, great singer and great actress who as a person has remained unspoiled, warm and very funny too. She also wrote what I think is the greatest Italian cookbook of all time. At the time this show was done Hollywood was still like a small town, the only difference being it was a town of filmmakers, dancers and singers. You'd be surprised at how normal life was otherwise.
