Nier: Automata- I can't recall ever being so captivated by a game. At least not in the last decade. I think maybe I'm going a little crazy. Regardless, I haven't been able to string a single non-Nier related thought together this week as this review has all but consumed me. Even now, I am still deeply unhappy with it as I feel it does not do the game justice. But I know I wouldn't be happy with anything I produce at this point, so my hope is that you enjoy this review more than I did, and if you hadn't thought to purchase and play Nier, that you might revisit that decision.
This cannot continue...

@@MemeLordCrusader Have you not played them? A is basically the prologue of the story. B is a quick replay through the story through the perspective of 9S, this is the weakest point f the game but there are many things still to learn. C however, is the whole second half of the game, and what makes it truly special. D is an alternate ending to C (without spoiling anything, you can quickly select the final mission after what ever ending you get and make the other choice). And E is the ACTUAL ending, is is quite possibly the most memorable and best executed video game ending. PLEASE. If you had any interest while playing A, do yourself a favor and go back. Look up a guide for some of the 9S specific B run side missions, otherwise blast through the main story and get to route C :)

In this game FILLED with truly profound moments, none moved me more than during the true credits sequence, (SPOILERS AHEAD) with the insanely difficult bullet hell survival, and messages from other players accumulating every time I died offering words of encouragement, and the offer of a helping hand. I tried so hard to listen to the ones who said I could do it alone, but in the end I accepted the help, and holy FUCK when all the chorus voices join in the soundtrack, moved me to actual tears! Then when I finally beat that section, I was asked to give a message to other players, so naturally I offered myself as help to them, only to be told that if I wanted to help, it would require deleting my save data. I had spent so much time gathering and levelling my items and weapons, I thought I would just go back to chapter select and get 100%, but the game *insisted* it was not kidding around. I hesitated, I could have gone back and changed my message to one of encouraging a solo win, but I felt so inspired by my experience that, even though my individual contribution to someones game will have very little weight, it meant a lot to me, in a pay-it-forward kind of way, that I was willing to make that sacrifice. Right up until checking the main menu, I had some doubt that it would REALLY go that far, but my GOD do i respect the balls to LEGITIMATELY make you give up something of such personal value, for this almost invisible selfless act. I *mourned* my data, but I wasn't mad. I was a lot of emotions, but all of the kind to where I now hold videogames as a medium to a vastly greater standard.

I don't know if you read these, particularly not on a 5 year old video, but, you made a big point in this video about wanting to encourage one person to play this game. I picked it up a long time ago, played it a little and gave up. I had the same opinion as you, "anime ass, meh, not for me." Later I came across your review and it convinced me to try it again. I can't thank you enough for it, it was an experience I'll never forget. The past week with all this SadFuntago content resparked that excitement, which again I wouldn't have had without this review. This may well be the most beautifully constructed and well reasoned review you, or anyone else I've ever seen, has created. It more than does the game justice. So thank you, again, for convincing me to take a chance on some anime dominatrix maid.

I went in completely blind, and it made my experience one that challenged my future expectations for all narrative-driven video games, and film, for that matter. It is a stunning achievement in medium, and absolutely shatters the notion that video games cannot be considered as enlightened or inspired as "proper art". I would go further, and say it easily surpasses well-known fiction in artistic mediums more commonly utilized for this type of story, like film, an anime, manga, or novel. Thousands of commenters over the course of six years are not wrong. If you are finding this review, and haven't played Automata, get on board. Bring tissues.

@@Aisatsana1971 well, I may not be an anime fan, but I still found this game to be fun to play, not for the artstyle, but due to the combat mechanics being a hack'n'slash (aside from the flying sections). The story, although good, the entire "play through the game 5 times to experience it in its entirety" thing got really tiring after like the 3rd playthrough, so it may be good, but tedious to get through.

Be prepared to get a lil annoyed with loading screens to different areas, it's not open world like Automata The story as it's gone on has gotten me pretty intrigued too. I like the characters but it feels like the development/relationship between a couple of them felt a little rushed imo. Just like Automata, the difference between normal and hard mode is a big jump. In Normal, i can slaughter a group of enemies with relative ease. Whereas in Hard mode i couldn't even kill the entire group of the same enemies and i died like 4 times before switching back to normal to kill em. That might just be me being awful though lol. The side quests are very much just kinda getting supplies and running errands for people, but there were a couple so far that made me sit back and really think about the choice i wanted to make. Plus, the side the quests are how you make the money and it is cool cuz it lets you get a better feel of the society. The scenery in some shots is pretty too. Some of the dialogue can be a little cringe but overall it's fine. The music is good too but for me not as great as Automata, but that is a tough soundtrack to beat. The combat play is pretty similar to Automata as well. I'd say the biggest thing for me was at the beginning with the genre change going from a science fiction-style game to one with medieval/fantasy vibes but i'm used it now. I'd recommend it, it's been a fun play so far.

This review single Handedly shaped my 2021. Watched this review early in the year and decided to play it. 1 year later and I’m still in awe of this game, played replicant remaster that came out in the ps4, decided to look more into this lore and lord and behold I bought a ps3 to play drakengard 3. Months later I’m playing NieR Reincarnation. The stories and the way everything is presented has changed my view of gaming. Like many people say, I wish I could experience this story all over again for the first time.

I have nought but this to say - the greatness of a story is not measured in how it affects you the first time, but in its ability to draw you back for the 100th, even when you know exactly what will happen. It's why people come back to Shakespeare, and I hope this stands the test of civilizational time in the same fashion. I know it has stood the test of time for me. I hope you can find enjoyment in having suspense where once there was surprise.

I don't regret getting this game, absolutely wonderful, the moves of the character are epic and all the details of the game are mind blowing.... Finding my body at the bridge where the boss battle at the start of the game happens surprised me , as i didn't even know you can go back there and get the big sword back, i love how you can combo the two swords together.

Moetez Ouelhazi Well to be HONEST, i have not played past a short amount. I started trying to level up something and was make things easier. But an issue I have with the game is it heavy reliance on skill and reaction time of the player over it rpg qualities. Don't expect hours of collecting money and upgrading things to show too big of a difference like in a nirmal rpg. Even games like Devil May Cry and God of War make more use of the rpg a qualities. I also found the general gameplay pretty repetitive despite dishing hours of upgrades into completely different weapon types.

Your comment near the beginning that perhaps it will take a while before people properly appreciate this game in light of what comes after is so spot on. I only just played this game around this time last year, and since that time, I haven't played any other game that has come remotely close to matching the brilliance of this game's story and immersive narrative. Even now thinking back on the last TEN years, even, I still don't think anything comes close. It's as if this game has completely altered my emotional memory, and now I can't even remember what I used to consider "good" before this game came along. I definitely remember really getting emotionally invested in Ghost of Tsushima, God of War, Nier Replicant, Returnal, etc, but for each one of them, there was just something about them that just didn't "click" completely. Returnal didn't have enough of an emotional punch, Ghost of Tsushima felt a little too cheesy with how the uncle was so uptight about not using certain war tactics cuz "we samurai yo", God of War is literally half a story, and Nier Replicant has moments here and there that I thought were a little contrived and took me out of the moment (like Devola and Popola near the end of each route) and having to play through the exact same sequences of events so many times really soured the experience for me more than anything else. Nier Automata, on the other hand, only continues to get better and better in my memories, and with each passing story I continue to encounter after it, it only looks better by comparison. Nothing has made this more clear than the existence of Xenoblade Chronicles 3. I have been a mega fan of the series since Xenogears, which I actually only finished about a year after beating the original Xenoblade Chronicles back in 2012. Xenogears is a story like Nier Automata in my mind, i.e. one that hits literally every spot it possibly could and hits them at light speed. I've been watching through a playthrough of Xenosaga and I desperately want to get back to part 3, but it's been so long that I would need to start over at this point, and I will say I think it has potential to also be an incredible story on the same level as Xenogears, but I can't say yet. Anyways, I love Xenoblade Chronicles, but the story was not nearly as personal nor complex as Xenogears, so as great as the overall experience was, it still didn't eclipse Xenogears for me. Then Xenoblade Chronicles 2 came out, and other than a really cool twist near the very end, it was basically just a shounen/harem rom-com anime story, and it fucking sucks most of the time. I've harbored a grudge against that game for the last 5 years because I was expecting a story at LEAST as good as Xenoblade, but secretly I was hoping that maybe somehow Tetsuya Takahashi could find it in himself to actually make something as good as Xenogears again. That was an unrealistic hope, but man, he didn't need to disappoint THAT hard. Then Xenoblade 3 was announced. This time SURELY, I thought, we can finally get a good Takahashi story for the first time in over 10 years. There's no way the man could really have wasted an entire decade of his life making stories that aren't worth consuming, right? And for a time, I was convinced that Xenoblade 3 was a success. It starts off fantastically with grounded characters that completely avoid cringe anime tropes, no pointless sexualization, just "regular" anime stuff that used to be around before Sword Art Online popularized the adaptation of terrible light novels into mega hit anime. Things were going great, the story had a solid direction, and about 4/5ths of the way through the game we hit an emotional climax that had me crying through about a solid hour of cutscenes. It was brutal, it was effective. I was IN the story. It HAD me. And then the rest of the game happened. What followed was the most boring snow level ever created, a hyped up area called "The Cloudkeep" that was actually just a cube with 3 staircases and a boss fight at the top, a lore dump that amounted to "things sort of just happened and now we're here", a fetch quest throughout the rest of the world you've already explored, and a final dungeon. Throughout all of this, the story evolves thusly: two major story beats are explained in the "things sort of just happened and now we're here" variety, and the rest of the major plot points simply *aren't explained at all.* When the credits started to roll, I think I actually shouted at my TV "You're joking, right?" Another 5 years of Tetsuya Takahashi's mind wasted on a story that he decided not to finish. At least Xenogears' story itself was actually told to completion, even if the second half of the game was mostly unplayable due to production issues. The funny thing is, Xenoblade 3 feels the exact same way, like after the climax hits it feels like there should be another half to the game, and there just isn't. Only unlike Xenogears, they didn't even finish telling their story. All of this then made me think "man, what even was the last game I played where the story actually finished well?" and I immediately thought of Nier: Automata. I thought of it so much, in fact, that I couldn't stop thinking about it. I've now watched at least a dozen reviews in the last several days wondering if I'm going crazy, but no, it seems the rest of the internet agrees that this game has aged so unbelievably well I would serve it at a 5-star restaurant. So, your prediction was correct. In light of what games have come after it, there is still nothing that compares to Nier: Automata. I would put it alongside only 2 other games that I think match its quality in terms of storytelling and affectation: Undertale and Xenogears. These are without a doubt my 3 favorite videogame stories, bar none. The more stories people try to tell in videogames, the more Nier:Automata looks better by comparison. It's truly insane, but it's just that good.

WOMANpukumaru That's exactly why the game's narrative is so powerful. There's no word I hate more than "overrate" when talking about art. You can't take people's appreciation of a piece of art and completely disregard it by saying that they are wrong to love it this much. That's quite arrogant. This review doesn't even delve to the core of why this game is special: its design. This game is a masterclass in game design and narrative design, no game before it achieved the level of mastery with which it can convey abstract ideas and the narrative itself through gameplay. The narrative itself is a perfect example of how you can use the medium to subvert and reset expectations in order to tell a unique story that could only be told through a video game. Everything in the game's design serves a purpose and enhances the narrative. If anything, the fact that 2B is dressed like a skimpy french maid only made the game's final moments even more powerful. Proving once and for all that video games can make you feel deeply for characters regardless of character design. Her design tells you nothing about her, if anything it conveys ideas about the game that couldn't be further from the truth. That's another example of expectation subversion applied to video games. The people who made this game (and especially Yoko Taro) understand how video games work and how players engage with a game and they use this knowledge to craft an experience that never shies away from completely rebooting its tone and the narrative's stakes in order to surprise and engage the player. Oh, and he happens to like sexy girls. Why should he need other reasons than that to make some if in the end it serves the narrative he crafted ? NieR:Automaya single handedly makes the case for video games as art.

I had never heard of the older games and had nier on my radar for a while (I am a anime fan, rpg fan but I mainly play counter strike). while board, I started looking into it a bit and discovered the older games and their 'relation' to NA, was like screw it il preorder. I also had never taken a day off work for a game and it seemed like a great excuse. the day before PC release, I had watched a few reviews trying to avoid spoilers as best I could, I then found clemp's videos on drakengard and nier (watched all of them execpt drakengard 3, will probably go back and watch, but was mainly interested in niers backstory) and from the moment I ended that last nier analysis video, watching some 2 to 2.5 hours of his stuff, I knew NA would be amazing. Then friday came about. I had other plans as well (Went to the range with a military friend and his mom, tough his mom how to shoot the guns that they owned but she had never fired before as well as laying out all of mine for them to choose from), I got home and the install was complete and from there I powered through the game, I did quite a few side quests but skipped a lot, the main story just kept pulling me. 40 hours in and I had finished. its been what, 2 weeks since then and I still can't get N:A out of my head, I watched this review because I just love content about N:A and seeing what the press has said and I agree, they describe a masterpiece but give it a 9... very odd. Very great review skill up, subbed because of this video! Hearing the music in the background while you talked gave me chills, you described it perfectly as well! Ever so often over the last few weeks I have done somthing I have never done before, listened to a games soundtrack alone while doing other stuff (theme park is best music IMO). Thanks for the great video, I will probably pass this to a few friends!

While this game is great...it's far from being masterful.. whatsoever... I have this game and beat it multiple times A through E or whatever.... and.... it's not masterful... many parts of this game could have been fleshed out so much more.... for one. The level design is somewhat atrocious... a robot utopia world could have been a perfect place to flex creativity and ambiance here.... the level design is desolate and honestly quite frustrating considering the amount of back trekking done... The gameplay itself is masterful... best I've seen in some time... very fun sword play and I love the chip system... Conceptually it's deep. But execution wise isn't masterful.... The music is wonderful... I'll never forget the "THIS CANNOT CONTINUE" scene and the boss fight.. brilliant... Overall the game is a 7.5 to me... while ganeplay and story is great... the level design structure, ridiculously stupid map system and quest system make this average.. The developer Yoko is a great conceptual designer. Not a game designer or director... If LEVEL 5 had this franchise they would make it sing... I'm playing Ni no Kuni 2 right now and I'm way more impressed with the amount of thought and quality gone into the product.... If you're gonna play this game, don't buy it full... buy it bargain bin

Indeed. While playing some parts of it, I tried to imagine some parts of it as a SNES or PS1 game. The way it fix so many genres together without being overwhelming is incredible! Also, for a modern story-driven game, it makes a lot of effort to remember you're actually playing a game, and not watching a interactive movie. I think the moments that did impact me the most were while I was in control of one character, and these are the majority here.

Just finished it this week... Man... it really is a masterpiece. There are so many points in the game where I just paused to absorb what just happened, to reflect if I really made the right decision, ugh that moment with a certain character... So many scenes where I was emotionally affected. There were even times when I was late to realize I was already in tears. All the moments I had on this game, I wish I can forget it so I can experience it again. I will treasure these memories. Thank you very much for this review, Ralph.

I first became interested in playing this game after watching Sterling's glowing review but never got around to it. But after watching this review a couple of weeks ago I decided to bite the bullet and do it, and it is such an amazing game. I've only just started it, really, and can't get enough. It's rare for me to feel that way about this genre of game, which usually isn't my thing. I actually listen to some of the music from this game regularly on Spotify and hadn't even noticed until this video when you pointed it out and the song was so familiar to me.

Hey Dude, it's me, the one person who explicitly played the game because of your video I was here to watch gameplay footage of games I wanted to buy in order to make a decision a couple of weeks ago. NieR wasn't even one of the games I took into consideration - I didn't even know it existed. But somehow I stumbled upon this video. So yes, your seven days of work paid out. You successfully convinced me to get it even though I was here to compare three totally different games on order to figure out which of them I would buy. And now, there is only one thing left to do and say: THANK! YOU! ❤️ This is one of the best games, if not THE best game, I've ever played in over 23 years of console gaming. Edit: Yoko Taro himself tweeted at me about this review! Extremely humbled that he took the time: twitter.com/yokotaro/status/849523282193920000 Hey all- really hope you enjoyed the review. Don't forget that there is a free demo on the PS4 store, and on Steam you can refund it within the first 2 hours of play if you don't like it. I know this one is a bit of a 'long-shot' purchase (it was for me) so if you want to try before you buy, then I'd recommend going down these routes. Hope you love it. It really is amazing :) I also have one REALLY big request for a Japanese speaker with some spare time on their hands. I'd love to have this video translated into Japanese so I can forward this review to the game creator, Yoko Taro. Please message me on twitter @skillupyt if you happen to have the time for something like that. It honestly makes me sad to know that I won't be able to pass on my thanks to Taro in his own language, so I thought I'd make this odd request :) Thanks everyone.

+SkillUp Nier: Automata is just as good as you say. I played it almost nonstop for over 80 hours on PS4 Pro, dropping Horizon and Breath of the Wild, as great as they are, completely until I'd completed Nier: Automata A through E. It's easily my favorite game so far this year, and also I'll rate the soundtrack among the best of all-time. It's very likely Nier: Automata also has the best story and animation of 2017, which resulted in a punishing experience for me with Andromeda due to catastrophically unfortunate timing of release dates. Few games have continued to lurk in my thoughts the way Nier: Automata has. I'll be picking it up again for Steam later this year. I'm hoping for a remaster of the original Nier as well. 9.5/10 for me and probably my GotY for 2017.

I had checked many of the reviews online for Nier Automata and thought that they either didn't grasp the true depth and value of the game (despite high numbers/ratings) or didn't understand how to reflect that in the grade/number they gave it. Also none of them (in my opinion) delved into the depth of the experience, and the expression of true story telling that exists in Nier. Not a single review has done it the real justice it deserves, until now. Is it weird to say this has made me not only respect you more as a youtuber, but as a person as well? I've told everyone I know about it as well and tried (but feel I have failed) to convey the value and depth of Nier Automata to them. I know for certain it's the best game I've played in the last five (maybe ten years) and will certainly be one of the best games I believe I'll ever play in my life time. The experience resonates on a level deep enough to touch who we are as a person, and how we, as a people might very well be connected on levels we're only beginning to understand. But I digress, I'm getting overly philosophical and wordy. Thanks for vocalizing and expressing so well in a video, what I think many have experienced since playing through Nier Automata. Thanks for a review that does true justice to this masterpiece and labels it for what it is. And lastly, thanks for sharing it on this medium so it can reach the hearts and minds of many who would have lost their chance to experience what we did because they overlooked this gem of a story.

My advice, stick to the story and don't put the game on the back burner for too long during your 1st playthrough or you'll potentially lose track of some cryptic elements or even where to go sometimes as the map and waypoint system kinda sucks. Other than that, it's a masterpiece. Get your ending "A" and then hit sidequests and exploration on the 2nd "B" playthrough. The game doesn't click until then anyways. It takes three playthroughs with three different characters to truly finish the game in a single way, but there are more endings that are worthwhile if you're feelin the story. I started Nier digging the gameplay, but I ended it savoring the story which is rare af for me, I usually put gameplay above all. I wound up watching Drakengard lore videos...Yoko Taro is a brilliant madman.

Wanted you to know just how convincing I found your analysis. As someone who is often disappointed with a lot of different creative media, it is refreshing to hear someone speak so highly and so convincingly regarding the quality of a product. I want to say, this is not the kind of game I would normally be interesting in playing, additionally I earn minimum wage, I also never buy games on release, as usually £40-£50 can affect my living standards for that month; however, I am choosing to make an exception. It is blindingly obvious that this is one of those works that is not just crafted, it is born, the creators of these kinds of media are concerned with one thing and one thing only, reaching the greatest potential possible; in doing so they give birth to a community dedicated to unravelling its secrets and examining its genius, not only do I hope to be part of this community, but so rarely do I allow myself to be witness to its birth. With the hopes of inspiring a similar mentality in the industry surrounding it, I will be throwing my measly sheckles into the collective hat. Thank you for bringing this game to my attention, by doing so you have fulfilled the greatest role that critics can, in other words, hopefully games like this will raise the standards.

I'm 3 years late but I wanna play this now Update: it's not just a game, it's literally an experience. It's intense and makes you think and gives you emotion and I've just never experienced a game like this. The music, the quest, the endings, everything is just amazing.

I watched the first few minutes of this review back when it came out, about two years ago, in the middle of a deep depression. I had just gotten PS4, too, my first console ever. Horizon Zero Dawn was one of the first games I bought, and the pictures I saw of Automata looked kind of pale in comparison - and yeah, I didn't much care for the waifu aspect either, or the cute robots. The first few minutes of this video convinced me to give the game a shot. I fell in love, and in the middle of a severe mental illness where nothing much felt like anything at all, this game made me feel and think and appreciate so many things. Two years on, it remains my favorite game ever, and I still marvel at its design, its themes, the interconnectedness of it all. I admire how Route A kinda feels shallow the first time you play it, but once you've finished the game and you play or see someone else play it, you get how much emotion and effort there is. All the silences that made no sense are now full of meaning - and pain. It's a masterpiece, still, and I owe it to you that I ever played it. Who knows how much more, because it might've literally saved my life. So yeah, your seven days was worth it. Thank you.

It actually makes me so happy reading your comment. I can definitely believe how this game can make one's life change, i changed myself a bit and the way i view the world after finishing this game. Hearing that it probably saved your life made my day, because i have so much love and appreciation for this game.

Wow, I hope you’re doing great bro. I almost skipped this gen, I only had my Xbox 360 but didn’t play it much at all. Got a PS4 last year in the midst of my depression, I’m 30 years old and never knew what true depression was... but during those agonizing months (being away from drugs and alcohol) I was able to find myself again.

After spending 30+ hours in this game, I promised myself to go see the game's OST orchestra show since the song tracks in this game is absolutely incredible. I'm glad I could fulfill that just before the COVID outbreak. Seriously tremendous experience. And Yoko Taro himself was on stage!

The review that single handedly created a level of trust between me as a viewer towards you as a reviewer. This review was born after I already finished everything in NieR and after watching this review I just knew if I ever want a reliable reviewer who approaches games the way I do, each differently according to how each is best approached, then I'd come here. Nearly 4 years later I'm rewatching this review and during all these years not once have you delivered anything less than this quality. Bravo, and thank you.

...yuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuup. For me that was the other way around. I already trusted this guy, and seeing that he called it a masterpiece was enough to push me over the edge and buy it. I was just like he was at the start of the video, with one friend who said "no seriously, it's amazing, SERIOUSLY PLAY IT". Now, I'm that friend.

You know, I was on the fence about NieR: Automata when it came out. I was going back and forth over whether it was worth my money or time. Reviews were very favourable, but I've played games with favourable reviews before and found they didn't deliver the kind of experience I was personally looking for. Skyrim comes to mind as a perfect example of this; it was widely hailed as one of the greatest games of the last generation. Naturally, I picked it up, played it and put it back down 10 hours later. Never finished it. Never picked it back up. Anyway, I stumbled across this review. I've never seen any of your videos before, but the title and thumbnail grabbed me. I thought, "Maybe i'll get a 50th opinion from this guy." I didn't get an opinion. I got the single greatest review of a game I have EVER read, or watched. The passion you put into this review is awe-inspiring. It reminds me of my own passion for video games, a passion that seems to have faded in recent years; whether that's due to recent video games not providing the same experience I came to expect over a decade ago, or a progressive change within myself. You said if this review prompts at least one person to buy this game, it will be worth it. I just want to let you know, that's exactly what your review did. Immediately after finishing the entire review, I went out and bought it. The experience was worth much more than the price tag. I no longer doubt that video games deliver the experience I'm looking for. NieR delivered that experience and much, much more. So, thank you for your review. Without it, I may not have experienced one of the greatest games of this generation. You'll be my go-to for quality game reviews from now on. Subscribed.

After seeing your review a couple months ago, i FINALLY get to experience this game since it came out on Switch (somehow???) I'm just a couple hours in and it's already hooked me in a way a video game hasn't since Breath of the Wild. All the subtle details you mentioned and more that i'm finding out myself has got me thinking aliens must have made this game. No disrespect to the creators but I just cannot believe a team of people came together to create such a masterpiece. Their way of thinking is ahead by lightyears.
