NieR Reincarnation First Impressions - Worth Caring About?

INFORMATION CORRECTION:
NieR Reincarnation is the 3rd game "released" in the NieR series, but not the 3rd game chronologically.
"Rein is a Sequel to Automata the same way Automata was a sequel to OG" was based on incorrect information that was circulating at the time that has since been updated.
"Takes place in the same universe..." Definitely takes place in the Yokoverse, but as to this day it's still completely unknown where and how the game takes place.

As someone who plays gacha games fairly often, the rates in Nier Reincarnation are comparatively not that bad to other gacha games. My biggest problem with it is that weapons take up the majority of the 4 star pull rate. Can pull as much as you'd like, but there's a chance you'll NEVER get the character you want, so yes, you got very lucky with your 2B and 9S pull.

I've played every nier games and reincarnation is my least favourite, mainly because of the awful gacha system, I do like the graphics/visuals, story and music tho so... I'll give this game a plus point but it wouldn't change my opinion about how awful their gacha system is. I'd rather play SMT Dx2 or FGO. Instead of wasting your time pulling useless shit, just buy other Square Enix games on android. Trials of Mana, SaGa Frontier and Final Fantasy 8 are the current ones, they're much more worth the money!

I and many others are not happy Yoko Taro went this route with NiEr, but I can only hope the money they make from this game (and they WILL make a ton of money off this game), will led to another well funded console game. fortunately, this is not truth for every gacha game my friend, as a long time FGO player you can use you characters for years and if perhaps the game make it feels like somehow they are not strong as before anymore, new characters can make they shine again as its support or with great synergy. I'm not sure but I think you were looking at the individual chances of getting them over the 4 star general chances. Gatcha usually has the percentage of getting that rarity then it rolls again for that pool to see which 4 star you get.

Hey, great video! I was in the English beta and really liked it but unfortunately only got a bit further than the plot you described in the video. A part of me wanted to play as much as possible but another part told me to wait until the actual release as to not have to replay too much. I also just wasn't sure how I felt about the game as a whole. I liked what I saw for the most part but have a hard time describing what worries me about it. My only hope is on final release I can play it further and hopefully see the puzzle pieces come together.

Just an FYI. Square handles their Gatcha mechanics differently than most other companies. In SE gatcha games you are guaranteed certain hits after a fix number of rolls. So if you are rolling for something specific... which is usually whatever is being advertised in a banner... you will always get it before you spend insane amounts of money on it. Least that's how their Gatcha games work stateside. I'm not sure if they follow those same rules in Japan... but Japanese people love gambling so I wouldn't be surprised if not.

I'm like Yoko Taro is so crazy and subversive that he'd probably do a Nier game on mobile just to throw people, or make some completely different genre game. The part where you say, "it takes place in the same universe" is a bit misleading. If "universe" here refers to the overall Yokoverse, then, yes... because Rein is an official, new entry into the NieR series. The line where you say, "and is a sequel to Automata in the same way Automata was a sequel to the original NieR." is based on false information from the Rein Wikipedia page, which has since been edited to remove the incorrect information. I only bring this up because there are those who have been confused after watching this video. We currently don't know where in the overall Yokoverse Rein takes place yet, but I think we know enough to say that it doesn't exist within the normal linear flow of time. During the Rein 1st anniversary livestream, it was stated that Rein's connection with the NieR series has been rather opaque thus far and that they hope to start dropping larger breadcrumbs soon. The game is only on its 2nd main story arc, so I would assume we'll get larger hints by the end of this one, although we probably won't get definitive answers until maybe the 3rd or 4th story arc. This is just my guess, though.

If they are doing it the right way, which I do believe that they are capable of, this should be quite well playable entirely f2p. Most of the more successful Gacha Games (at least the asian ones) are made so that you really don't need to spend money, but you can usually speed up a few things if you spend a few bucks, which is why a lot of ppl spend at least a little bit over time (which is fair enough, if I'm having a lot of fun in a game, I think it's alright to spend a bit of money on it). In my experience only min-maxing would require actual cash and min-maxing (or trying to collect everything) in Gatcha Games usually equals whaling (spending a lot of money until you get what you want). Those whales are also usually the biggest income sources for those games. You probably won't be able to play it 30h in a row like a computer or console game but for casual f2p gaming those mobile games are actually pretty good. That being said, great overview, I'll be looking forward to the new NieR Story when it's out on Global!

My phone isn't really high end and as a person who loves to really dive into a game, this doesn't seem too appealing tbh. I love mobile games but I'd separate it from "real" gaming like on my console. It's kind of a shame since it looks amazing! Something that interests me, for some stupid reason, is that the main character looks like she has a leash on her back and the control is pulling a circle from another circle. So it's like you're pulling on their leash to make them move or something. During the intro cut scene, I remember someone melodramatically stating that they're not in control of their actions or something to that effect. I'm wondering how or if these two things fit together. The only gacha game I played until now was Fate Grand Order. I think they're similar in how they do their unregulated gambling. You need 30 Saint Quartz to do a 10 summon, one SQ is $0.99. The 10s you'll get are mostly things you can equip to your characters. it's not 1:1, but it feels awfully similar to me.

I'm 11mins and 38secs into this video and I'm not sure if you brought up if the game has a pity system or not, but usually Gacha games are designed for you to not constantly pull on every banner and you usually wanna save your resources and pull for banners you actually want(This is probably gonna be very difficult if you play JP because you won't have the future sight that the GL version will have) As far as enjoying the story and not being walled by gacha bullshit I'm confident that you'll at the very least be able to enjoy the story but I assume that when comes to challenges/event challenges(Haven't played the game just guessing off of other games I've played) gacha will actually matter there. with that being said really curious how far Yoko Taro wants to take this game's story since it's gonna be canon.

As far as I'm aware, through researching on Japanese info sites /message boards, this game in particular does not have a pity system.

You're correct, most gatchas have pity timers. From what I gather, this one doesn't seem to have one. I might be wrong / it might have been updated in though.

Mobile Games are generally made with incredibly low budgets and insanely high monetization (Gacha being the go-to). Recouping costs isn't a factor in choosing Gacha, it never has been nor will it ever. Outright paying for what you want could easily recoup the costs of a paper string budget, this has been proven time and time after, and budget niche games tend to make back their money to keep their devs and publishers afloat as sequels don't usually stop coming out. Point being, Nier is a massive franchise with massive brand awareness. If this was paid, people would've bought it, if it had fair monetization that had a focused on purchasing CONTENT rather than playing a slot machine, people would care a lot more about it. It doesn't help that it was released on Mobile, could've been released on Switch, seems like the perfect place for an experimental title, and SE has released "side-content/games" on Nintendo platforms previously. But that's not the audience SE wanted, they wanted the quick buck to profit off of the Franchise because they didn't want to give the budget for another game in the franchise. With Platinum Games working on Bayo 3, they weren't going to come back for this game. Supposedly wasn't this supposed to be an MMO that basically failed so they scrapped it into a Mobile Cash Cow cause' that's what everyone else is doing? The only way I can justify this even existing is if the proceeds will go to the development of further Nier titles and remakes. I don't think that's the case sadly because we haven't exactly seen many announcements of that and Nier Replicant doesn't count because it was in development far before this even existed. - Side Note: If anyone actually cares about this Cash Cow, I'd recommend watching videos on it here. You aren't missing ANYTHING when it comes to Gameplay, so what'd be the difference actually playing through it? Seriously, most Mobile Gacha games have similar game mechanics and the 3D turn based ones aren't much different. There's numerous videos here on YT going over the story, so yeah. (Personally, I hate the idea of a franchise like Nier becoming just another sellout cash cow on Mobile, it's a massive disservice in my honest opinion. I see this was incredibly corporate ruled as they did put the effort into the story itself, I haven't gotten into it too much but I'll be practicing what I preach and watching stuff on it. There is clearly some thought that went into the artistry of the game itself, honestly the theming is on point, and it "feels" like a Nier game. So to have it bogged down by all this corporate bullshit is an absolute shame. Honestly, I hope it gets shutdown within a year or two as profitability sinks due to shitty rates and patches, maybe they'll make a single player version without all the Gacha (Kingdom Hearts did something similar, dunno how it turned out, but it's better than nothing.).)

I love the visuals and the story, and I asked myself if I'd enjoy this game without these and the answer I think is NO. I want to think that I would but I've been grinding for enhancement items and for 2P, 2B and A2, with no success after 30k gems. And yes, you can probably go through all 9 chapters without a 4 star char. I've finished ch. 6 without any difficulty. But if you want to "climb the ladder" this game requires a lot of attention and grinding. Learning what previous Nier game was like, I'm disappointed this franchise took this route.

so here is how gatcha get u. you see the 1% to get the cool character but chances are you will get at least one with all the rolls you get at the start and they are great powerful toons BUT.... the difficult spike will come and the only way to move forward it to rank them up. so it's not rolling A2 once is rolling her like 7 times to get an actual good toon.

You might or might not know it by now 2 years later, but you only need to get the character once, you can get extra copies for sure but it's just a stat boost that isn't even that big. On top of that, there are substitute items you can use instead of copies that you get from events quite a lot.

An S tier will outclass anything early game but by mid game and A or B tier will outclass it because of multiple copies powering up the character and the basically trick you into investing resources on a character that is not likely to be usable due to poor roll rate. I haven't played this game nor will I ever go back to gacha hell but I would comfortably bet 20 bucks this happens in this game too, at some point you drop the high tier toon and get the B tier with a massive amount of copies.

i think a lot of folks go ham into these games. They are very predatory, and make most of their profits off whales. However, I think the game telling you exactly what your chances are to pulling the rarer characters and weapons is leagues ahead of other gatcha. The game needs to be approached as a marathon and not a sprint. A lot of this stuff can be forced if you put enough cash through it. The grind is real, and again, treat it like a marathon, not a sprint. You can play completely free, but it takes a very long time to get a good team geared out enough to finish the 'core game'. I've heard some estimates say, at least 6 months. So it's really about the investment you're willing to put in. I've played a bunch of gatchas in the past, and you'll never be top 1% on the leaderboards, but it's still fun to do arena, and learning what you need to do in the game. Just some tips below for free play: If you look at the arena, it can be pay to win. Which I don't really like. The game from a beginner's pov, it feels like "you need to get the characters", which you don't. You try to get pulls of a core team of 3 to start, to get yourself through the main content without having to go into arena. 2B, 9S and A2 is a solid lineup to start the game with, and will be your main group of characters until you get them leveled to 90 with all their abilities maxed. That in itself is quite the grind, but the real grind is the weapons, and you need about 9 lvl 90 weapons to do all the content. After that, you will focus on getting an arena team. You can still do it while you pull boxes to upgrade your core team. But the main focus should be to your core team until they hit 90 and you have enough weapons. It's a matter of learning what items you need, and what activities you need to grind to acquire them. To make a lot of progress requires you exchange some of the tokens you earn from running events and dailies to stamina and grinding. There are also pity pulls you can get. You get 1 token for every pull. So when you pull 10, you get 10 tokens. You get a lot of free tokens just completing the in game stuff, and can get enough pulls to form a good team. If you still did not get the character you need, you can use the tokens you earned from all those pulls, to get a guaranteed single character (200 tokens) I hope that helps

Following the global release, im playing for a week already and I'm pretty impressed, I already have experience with gacha games so I know the drill in this kind of games, you have to play smart, not greedy, and Reincarnation really did well in my opinion, good story, good characters (Akeha best girl), interesting gameplay with helpful QoL features that makes the necessity for farming in the game less painful, you can do it in afk mode, which is something every game like this should have (and its one of the reasons why Fate Grand Order is dying for not having it), not that bad, I can see me playing it for a while.

What is even the point of afk mode? My biggest gripe with Arknights is that they put in an auto system for levels you perfect but instead of just letting you harvest the materials from the stage, they force you to watch a replay of what you did every single time. I wouldn't have unintentionally dropped it if I could just tap the level a couple times and be done with grinding for the day. You're already wasting my time with the stamina system. Eh, guess I'm not built for these games. I'll go replay Bloodborne for the eighteenth time I guess.

@@uhoh7545 afk mode saves my time, I do multi-task, leaving my phone there with the game open farming in automatic I can do other things while the game alone plays itself and do the stuff, so I don't need to do myself the boring part that is farm countless times the same stage.

I got 2B, 9S, A2, and 2P in both 3 and 4 stars. All in free rolls, nothing payed. I usually leave it farming the tokens in the event all by itself while I do something else irl. Finished the story up to the latest to get the gems from the missions for extra rolls which have also helped with upgrades. All in all it’s an okay game just don’t compare NieR automata with this, just think of it as a way to fill the void.

Usually gacha games have insane prices for x10 pulls if you pay straigh up. They then implement montly passes, where you can get a x10 pull for a fraction of the price *IF* you log in every day for a month. You save like 15 usd for a mukti pull and they make you develop a habit of opening the game daily. The best way to avoid all this is to go f2p and if you feel you need to spend money to enjoy it, it's best to take a break. I'm looking forward to trying the game out and I really enjoyed the video!

The trickiest thing about gacha games is that they are built to create a habit in their player (daily log-in and waiting for the next big content release), which turns into a sunk-cost trick by getting you to spend a 'little bit' because you've already put in so many hours thus far, and boom. You've dropped more money in that a legit game and you have little to show for it that will stand the test of time (aka game preservation). Any meaningful story you could get here will be drip-fed to you over the course of years.

As a gacha player, 10 rolls for effectively 40CAD is actually not that different from other games. The rates shown on the Nier Automata crossover are generous as well. Since most gacha character rarities have a lot of characters within them, the odds of getting a specific one are incredibly slim. So for a character like 2B, 9S, and A2 to each have a 0.5% chance is incredibly high hilariously enough. For an example, say you have a 2% chance to pull a max rarity character, but there's 20 max rarity characters you could get. That means to get a specific one is 0.1%. So you'd have a five times better chance of getting 2B than you would the single waifu you wanted in another game's pool. But even if the odds are heavily better, there's other variables that matter. Some gachas use what's called a pity system, a way to reward players who aren't as lucky by increasing or guaranteeing their odds at getting what they want. I don't know if Nier:Reincarnation has one, but I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't considering Japan's biggest gacha game Fate Grand Order, does not have one to my knowledge.

Honestly, the best way to experience it is just watching the summary/gameplay. This is because story and visual seems phenomenal but unfortunately there's little to no good gameplay elements. The biggest issue that I find with this game is how unrewarding it feels, the auto button which does everything for you feels like a slap in the face tbh. You called it another strand type game and honestly I disagree... Even death stranding had gameplay elements built into running/walking for example you actually had to plan the best route, avoid BTs, equip suitable equipments and what not but here it's just running/walking with analog stick(which again can be done at auto).
