“Nifty Fifty” Sony 50mm f1.8 in 2024?

The 50mm f1.8 is one of the first lens many photographers buy due to it being cheap and fast, but do we not give this lens enough credit?

I wish Sony made a mark ii for this lens at double or a little more of the old price but with significant upgrades- with inbuilt stabilizer, faster AF and all kinds of new and improved features that are appropriate enough to the price of 500-600$. Keep the f1.8 and the size, they're already perfect as is, just upgrade the speed and everything else.

I’d say an updated version would be great, mainly with new autofocus motors. There wouldn’t be a need for a built in stabilizer which would also add to the size and price. It’s already on the expensive side for what it is and they have a 50mm f2.5 with all the upgrades at $600

I literally just bought this to see how it performed next to the 1.4. And unless I’m zooming in at 300% the quality to the naked eye is nearly indistinguishable! What does give it away for me are the bokeh balls but it’s not bad! Just different 😂

Super helpful. Does the fact it's not water sealed a problem at all? Would that put my camera at risk if a bit of water/rain gets on it? I wouldn't have feared so much about it normally but last month I got a near bucket load of water from a roof gutter on me and my camera - it wasn't raining, not a harsh environment, just terrible bad luck. Thankfully I had the 24mm f2.5G on and no water got in... I'm just left wandering now what would have happened if I had a non-water sealed lens on. I'm still a beginner so am curious to hear what you and others think :)

Hey 👋🏾 Erwin I’m a new beginner & I brought a NEX7 that came with a 18-55mm Kit lens for $300 & it’s like brand new I am not a photographer 📷 so I wanted to ask if you think the Sony 50mm F1.8 or the OSS version will be fully compatible with my NEX 7? & will it put out better video quality than my kit lens?

Screw it, for $200 I’m gonna go get it as a fun/creative lens to accompany my Tamron 20-40 😂 I almost pulled the trigger on the 1.4 GM because… well it’s one of the best but maybe I’ll try this one out and if 50mm becomes my favorite then I’ll get it a year or two down the road.

Nice video! But I must say, this particular look, in evening light with warm tones and a vintage feel, is now over used. Would like to see KZbin photographers show case something different.

I think it’s impossible for something to be over used. The goal is to do what you like and create what you enjoy creating. What everyone else is doing shouldn’t impact that. If everyone is doing it or no one is doing it, as long as it’s what you like then go for it! There are tons of KZbin photographers doing all kinds of styles. The “vintage” vibe might be trendy at the moment but there are definitely a lot more people doing other styles as well
