To be honest though, FPTP has ensured a stable political system and government throughout British history, as it usually always ensures strong majority governments and therefore a sense of accountability in the political system. No offence but people who are calling for PR do not understand how poor the track records of said systems are, pretty much every European country that uses PR (Germany, Belgium, Netherlands etc) have chaotic politics, nothing ever gets done, constant stagnation, little accountability and the need for multiple parties to join in coalition to form a small majority, which again means constant infighting and ineffective governments.

Current Labour got the greatest seat/vote share ratio since the last Labour government and maybe ever since Middlesex still existed as a county Why would they change the voting system that benefits them the most? Even I doesn't like how FPTP works but since the ones that currently rules are the ones that benefited from it the most they won't change, maybw they're gonna make it more gerrymandered to benefit them more 😞😞😞

@yourma2000
@yourma2000 10 күн бұрын
No, we were offered an equally stupid voting system where a candidate that no-one chose as their first vote could become the MP. It was only fairer in the sense that no-one would be happy with the MP that they elected and if we had voted to adopt it then that would have snuffed out any efforts or calls for PR for many generations as the adoption of AV would have been seen as a progressive action taken by the people and "Why do we need to talk about PR when we just adopted this new system that the people wanted?". By not adopting AV we could at least say "We didn't vote to keep FPTP, we voted to reject AV." and still keep the cards on the table for a system change. That's why I voted against AV and I stand by m decision because now the talk of PR is flaring up again and the AV vote feels like a distant memory to people.

If only a right-wing party had been in power for the last decade and a half and in a position to change our electoral system to some sort of proportional representation. Alas, right wing parties like the Conservatives never really got the opportunity to hold power in UK government, did they.
