That's why he was crying before the kick (i.e., he was going to make it and lose his pub)! He fully intended on making the kick!

Such an awesome moment. Looks like a no-win situation. Either they lose the game or Nigel loses his pub. Shane had almost no time to consider what to do, and took a huge risk. No matter how this play ended up though, Nigel gets to keep his pub, which was what Shane wanted.

Shane was smart to pull the football; away at the last moment which made Nigel miss the kick so that he wouldn't lose the pub to those he owed money too. It was like in Peanuts in the funny papers in which Lucy yanks the football away at the last moment before Charlie Brown could kick it and winds up falling on his back.

Azure He would lose the pub anyway, and he knew it. Shane took the ball because Nigel was not able to score in this emotional state of mind, he would have missed and he would have lost face and they would have lost the game too.

I think the film is hazy on this point. All it basically says is that "Nigel had a gambling addiction and his pub was collateral for gambling debts." But why didn't these criminals simply take his pub when he defaulted? This is the only thing I can come up with although I haven't seen the film in years: he defaulted, begged them not to take his pub, and made them a deal to throw the game so they could recoup their money. If one was to follow that line of reasoning, then they must have thought betting against the Sentinels would benefit them in a greater way than the pub (how?). However, Nigel is only one member of a team, and there would have been no way of knowing that he would be in such a position to throw the game. That being the case, why did the criminals go along with Nigel's plan? Why did Nigel think they'd bite? How did Nigel know he'd be in such a position? I very well could be missing something. Don't think about it too hard like I did ;)

Actually, it was the crooks idea for him to start blowing kicks if he wants to keep his pup. Earlier in the movie, when he kicked the 65 yarder, they cut to the 3 of them sitting in the pup seeing Nigel on the tv. They said right then and there, that if he wanted to keep his pup, he better start blowing some kicks.

Nah he did it cause he saw that his friend was in a bad situation, and that he had to miss the kick, which would lose them the game. So he took him out of the equation so he wouldn't be forced to kick a bad field goal, and they could win

Nigel has fallen apart ebcause he got fearful and depressed seeing the maffia guys there in the stadium knowing they came to get their money. That way he lost his spirit and he knew he could not even score a goal, because he was crying and could not concentrate. Shane understood this and he saved him from humiliation as well as saved the game and they won without Nigel's scoring.
