There isn't really solid evidence one way or the other, just this general "well we 'assume' it must help in some marginal way, so wear them". At this point it's more of a social signal that any concern over health or safety. For example here in the states, if you look state by state at graphs of case numbers ebbing and flowing, you would never be able to tell when the mask mandates when into effect. In fact it's almost the complete opposite of what you'd expect.
