Yeah the bearhug hold is a basic simple move that can even an opening to the one doing the hood but if it’s done right it can actually be a effective and dangerous move.

During that scene Richard Widmark was behind director Jules Dassin digging his fingers into Dassin's shoulder because he thought the old man was really dying. Well, the old man lived another 18 years (dying at age 88) and laughing at how the Hollywood actor thought he was actually dying!
