From the context of the time, I'm sure many people were annoyed by Barbara's catatonic state and being the 'damsel in distress', but from a modern perspective I actually do like that it shows that not everyone will turn into a badass come the apocalypse. Some people really do experience trauma by choosing the 'freeze' portion of 'fight, flight or freeze'. I found Ben's care and protection of her, even though she was a strange woman he didn't know, to be very touching. Some people do not respond to trauma or stress well, and that does not make them any less worthy of survival.
@tomemeornottomeme18643 жыл бұрын
It's also realistic that someone like Barbara would freeze up. Her introduction to this apocalypse was her brother's death, which to her probably seemed like an outright homicide at the time. She didn't even know what was happening. Ben's introduction is a bit more stereotypically apocalyptic and he was forced to take action, as well as presumably never being around anyone important to him the way Barbara was. Ben entered the outbreak by killing a ton of the undead in one major attack. Barbara was forced to run, Ben was forced to fight; so they react very differently as the apocalypse begins to set in.

homie i hate to break it to you, the zombie genre has no rules, if you compare the walking dead(slow, easy to avoid zombies, usually long infection times) to left 4 dead(sprinting zombies, mutations and an unknown infection time) its obvious the “rules” get thrown out so much, i mean look at train to busan, they break their own rules, it takes the first girl at least 10+ mins to turn, then it takes someone under 3 mins and then again someone can fight turning bc of willpower or smth

It’s always funny seeing old horror movies that were once considered so horrifying. I remember my parents showing me jaws for the first time and I, a massive animal nerd born in 2001, was like “this isn’t scary, it’s just a shark that looks very fake.” Crazy how times change.
@moonooze61713 жыл бұрын
I was born in 1982 and it was the same. I remember my father telling me he was terrified as a kid of Bela Lugosi’s portrayal of Dracula. I was dumbfounded as to how he could be scared of something so lame, compared to Freddy or Jason hell even Jaws. Weird how each generation becomes more and more callous to some things.

Am I the only one who had a crush on Ben? Man was so handsome and bamf and I wished Duane Jones had gotten more roles like he deserved. He really was a great actor.
@Phoebe54483 жыл бұрын
Nope, I've got mad respect for him as an actor!! Easily my favourite character in Night bc of his versatile acting and badassery! His character would not work with anyone else. Duane Jones IS Ben, just as Ian McKellen IS Gandalf. Iconic. Shame he never got enough preesh. Everyone acting in this movie is great, but just Jones sheer performance easily gives him top billing imo. It would be nice if we got a prequel purely about Ben someday. In the movie, his monologue just encapsulates the hopelessness of a zombie apocalypse.

Johnny's death is a fantastic example of how to set audience expectations low. The level of brutality this movie can get as it goes on, in particular the zombie that gets stabbed in the head and of course the death of the mom, and the first death is a bloodless and kind of "classic" horror kill, very in line with something we'd see in films from the 40s or 50s. I imagine that kill was your usual "Oh, wow" thrill ride kill but then that skinless skull made people realize this wasn't your usual fun day at the movies.
