This movie has one of my favorite first kills. It's mid day and the sun is shining, Kirk makes an all too real small stumble and runs directly into the killer. It doesn't just cut away after one blow, we see him get brutally beaten down and then that metal door slides shut. It's so removed from modern jump scare kills and it still strikes a nerve to this day.

I’m a psychosis patient. Someone who deals with hallucinations and delusions on a daily basis. Though some are as simple as hearing a knock on the door, some can cause me to spiral out of control, with manic mood swings, paranoia and sleep deprivation. This however never causes me to cause harm to someone else, and I used to implode instead of explode. I’m glad you spoke about the idea that mental health suffering humans are more likely to implode and be a victim, rather than explode as a perpetrator. It’s something pretty rare in films. If someone saw my symptoms on paper, they’d probably be at least a little afraid to be left alone with me due to the media representation, even though I’m not a danger to others and have never been deemed as such.

As someone who advocates strongly (and has done full scale projects in my community) against the stigma of mental illnesses I sincerely appreciate the reminder you gave about people with illnesses or disorders. More often than not stigma harms those with illnesses and it leads to assumptions that anyone with a disorder or illness is violent. Just as James said, they are more often victims than perpetrator. Thank you for saying that! I know you won't see this but I love to see people reminding others not to stigmatize.
@rexviperfan Жыл бұрын
"they are more often victims than the perpetrator." Yet schizophrenics are still more likely to be violent. I hate these sort of phrases that try to change contexts.
@commanderweebsterz Жыл бұрын
@@rexviperfan not true While there have been recorded cases of schizophrenics being violent, I personally know some schizophrenics and have done extensive research on this subject. I know that doesn't mean much on the Internet, however the fact remains that schizophrenics are heavily stigmatized of being violent. Perhaps unmedicated and untreated, they *can* be violent, but in normal circumstances they often are not. I get what you're saying, but feeding into the stigma that they are prone to violence is just as bad.
@rexviperfan Жыл бұрын
@@commanderweebsterz ; We are talking about unmedicated schizophrenics (or other psychosis), specifically when they are in a manic or psychotic state. They can be unpredictable and aggressive when they are unmedicated, but return to normalcy when they get meds. There are obviously many cases of this happening, I even know of/are related to several who were extremely violent for years when they were off meds. These obviously don't make the significant portion of those with psychosis, but the portion that do can be *terrifying*, so it makes sense to use them as a model for horror movie villains. Anyways, my point really is that I don't like when truth/reality is buried by presenting 'alternative contexts'. It's like, two things can be true and not contradict each other, but to present one to discredit the other, it just doesn't sit well with me at all.

His brothers are despicable. Nubbins loves dead things, carcasses and he loves slicing his victims so they slowly die. Cook is a paranoid schizophrenic psychopath. Mental illness runs RAMPANT within the Sawyer clan. But not just mentall illness. Psychopathy, necrophilia, cannibalism, murder etc. Imo the only Horror family that rivals the Sawyers and may be even worse are the Firefly's. Both despicable but to me Firefly's are even more evil. Good on James for stressing the disconnect between portrayals of mentally unwell people as villains in horror movies and their more prevalent victimisation irl (in fact, not only are the mentally ill more likely to be victims of violent crimes than perpetrators, they’re also more likely to be the victim of a violent crime than neurotypicals). It’s by spreading awareness and remaining conscious of this fact that we can allow these films to remain entertaining, without letting them create implications that seep into real life. It may be a small thing but it’s great to see from such a hardcore horror fan.

From Leatherface's point of view killing Kirk and Jerry was probably self defence but impaling Pam on the meat hook, forcing her to watch him chop up Kirk's body, sticking her in the freezer and killing Franklin when he heard him and Sally shouting for Jerry obviously wasn't. Earlier in the film Drayton tried to warn them because he knew his house was near Sally and Franklin's granddad's house. "You don't wanna go messing around no old house. You don't wanna go messing around other folks property. If some folks don't like it they don't mind showing ya." What I've noticed is that some of the most infamous and influential slasher horror movies don't actually have that many kills or gore at all. It's just pure atmosphere and suspense. I love it.
@sexuallyactivetoyotaprius34542 жыл бұрын
I feel like having more kills just means more characters and more characters just means less time to spend on any of them. So they just feel like boring idiot meat sacks, which makes for a cheaper or more forgettable film.
@kainkong2742 жыл бұрын
@@sexuallyactivetoyotaprius3454 it can still be a redeeming quality to have cool kills and gore in a horror or thriller movie especially slashers & body horror films
@MZ-zu7wk2 жыл бұрын
Slashers were all about the suspense and build up more then body counts, at least until Friday the 13th came along and made it a murder fest with tons of onscreen blood and gore. Just about every slasher movie in the 80s followed this formula, even the sequels to movies that inspired Friday the 13th such as Texas Chainsaw, and Halloween.
@EvilStevilTheKenevilPEN159 ай бұрын
@@MZ-zu7wk Nah Friday the 13th sucked, as did parts 2 and 4. If you really want onscreen gore look up a film called _Maniac_

What kind of response is this? I think it’s visceral and horrifying. It would definitely make a plethora of different people have “nightmares” regardless of the release date. Jeez.
