I don’t think it’s a necessarily a bad thing to not stick with pixel art for a remake (after all, 2D animation has been executed well long before the invention of pixels), but the art direction here seems janky and indecisive. At the very least I’ll commend them for not going for a live action look, which would have been much more unwarranted for this type of game.

The issue with this clean cartoon art style is that it almost always looks flat. The shading needs to be extremely good to avoid this and not every artist can do that. Pixel art games usually have a different shading that gives them more depth and the CRT also helps by filtering any rough edges.

I just played the demo a few weeks ago and was immediately slapped in the face by the poor hit detection. Accurate physical contact is one of the most important things in beat em up games. Capcom can do it (Final fight, Cadillacs and Dinosaurus, Captain Commando, etc.) and it's excellent even in the NS original. This bugging causes that even if you are a good player who finished the original on one coin, you will cry at the remake. Thanks for confirming my initial thoughts on this remake.

Switch, however, is the best I've experienced for support. I play Street Fighter Anniversary with a Super Famicom pad. Everything I've tested works.

It's a bummer about the graphics, but to this game's credit, they patched it twice recently so it plays much better than when it was released. I remember losing all my lives to the 2nd boss on Medium Difficulty, and it was ridiculous. Thankfully it plays much better and they added death animations as well. Fingers crossed they'll patch in the ability to use the old graphics!!!

A lot of people are struggling to know what to call the old pixel art style graphics of the original. They're called raster graphics, it's when 2D art is made out of tiny little squares, it's what all old 2D sprite based games were made with. The graphics used in the remake are called vector graphics. Vector graphics can do curves (bessels), and the art can resemble cartoons or comics really well (i.e. Cuphead, Streets of Rage 4), but this ain't it... Some things should be left untouched.

There's no "square" in the old CRT tv tech, there are dots that's less uniform than the dots we have on modern LCD display, and the dots do not align in perfect checkerboard unlike modern display. It's a joke for ppl to claim original pixel art look better when they play it on modern display where it doesn't look anything like on CRT tv. I grown up with CRT tv and I'm grateful of the technology leaps in display technology and computer graphic.

i thought that it looked OK until I saw the original and realised that it didn't even seem the same game, despite the same title. A cash grab indeed with very little effort put into it. I got the Teen Wolf reference as soon as it was mentioned, even though it had not directly occurred to me. Literally, within 24 hours of hitting the Switch UK eshop this was slashed from £8.99 to £4.49 (and still is that price). I think that says it all. I was tempted to get it but after seeing this I think I’ll forget it. Unless they patch in a perfectly emulated original arcade version maybe.

Really didn't like that they went the lazy route with the background characters in the Bonus Games. The original had original sprites/art/whatever you didn't see anywhere else in the game except for the Bonus Games and they were quite interesting. This game just goes the lazy route and copy+paste the standard enemies into the background. Only thing I'll say that is decent or ok is the remixed tracks. Some of them were actually pretty good. And they have the option for original tracks as well which is great but playing it recently has shown that this game shouldn't have even been at the $5 discount that it got. It should have been a discount at $2.49.

No wonder Arcade Otaku on Twitter did not want to post about this. Yeah, no thanks, not interested in Night Slashers Remake. Give me Streets of Rage 4 or Shredder’s Revenge instead. The graphical style in that game looks similar to SoR4 to me but doesn’t come close to that game. Bad beat ‘em ups are fairly common it seems. I want a Simpsons arcade spiritual successor to look nothing like that but more like SR since Power Rangers is doing it.

Does this actually run at 60fps on other platforms or what? I have it on Xbox and it definitely does not. Most KZbin videos (including this one) show it as 60fps. I didnt know if that was just a capture/video quality thing, or if the game actually ran like that on the platform. If you look at this game on the Xbox store you can see what I mean by watching the two trailer videos on it, one shows the game as 60fps and the other at 30.

Mind you, there was a PERFECTLY fine port of the classic version on systems like the Switch a few years ago from Flying Tiger Entertainment under their Johnny Turbo's Arcade line. I have that along with the Dark Seal games (Gate of Doom and Wizard Fire) which FTE also released. They were DELISTED and now replaced by this hunk of crap. Maybe we should stop buying Forever Entertainment games. They're not good.

Hot take, but I'm not really getting the big hype for the original. It just feels like people are being nostalgia biased. People are treating the original like some coming to christ. It just reminds me of people who still praise Super Mario Kart and Mario Kart 64 when those games have aged terribly. I don't hate the original Night Slashers, but the meat riding is ridiculous.

Will agree that Super Mario Kart has aged horrendously due to the draw distance not being good, but 64 is playable. A lot of games are kinda hyped up because of their aesthetics and music though. Kinda the thing that makes them stand out compared to similar games in the same genre and I guess Night Slashers is unique in that regard. I do think people have the nostalgia goggles on a little too tight sometimes though. Like... Ocarina is a very influential game, but it's not objectively better than the games that came after. (Thankfully ship of harkinian fixes the framerate so that it runs higher than 20fps, so it's at least enjoyable to play.)

They'll bash Nickelodeon Kart Racers, Disney Speedstorm, Dreamworks All-Star Kart Racing, Beach Buggy Racing, Lego 2K Drive, Chocobo GP, and KartRider: Drift by calling them Mario Kart clones or Mario Kart rip-offs but then still praise Super Mario Kart and Mario Kart 64 till this very day when those games are objectively better than those two. Someone had done a poll asking people if they preferred Mario Kart Tour or Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled. Mario Kart Tour ended up winning. Pixel "art" was a technical limitation back in the old days, if pixel "art" is so good, why in the old days the game box covering art design don't use pixel "art" but choose to use highly detailed hand drawn picture instead? Highly detailed sprites like those used in recent TMNT brawler was fine, but I really cannot accept most 8/16bit pixel art used by many indie game makers.

When I saw the first trailer for this this I already knew it wasn't for me, because if you take the graphics of the original and turn them in to this, you have already lost the plot. At the very least, offer both styles, as the majority of the intended audience will be fans of the pixel style. So before this was even released, you had already alienated 70% of the people you needed to buy this. I honestly don't know who are in charge of these types of games, as this is an amazing game that could have been so much more. And yet some how this gets released to the like of nearly no one, how clueless can you be?

The art style is subjective. Yes most people won’t like it but that’s still subjective. But the bugginess, lack of animations and bad hit detection just aren’t acceptable

@@VideoGameEsoterica Very true, and that's why I referred to 70% probably not being interested, but Streets of Rage 4 has a similar art style, and that is one of the best brawlers in recent times. But they took the time to animate it properly and of course make it fun to play, while this game seemed to not even bother with the bare minimums.

Forever Entertainment is absolutely trash. All their remakes are a bad joke. They've ruined Front Mission, Panzer Dragoon and House of the Dead too. I have no idea how they're still running and funding games.

Advocating gamers to play free on emulation where the game is still available in market in some form is like encouraging piracy and theft. When SOR4 released many pixel art fanboys also complained about the new art style. I doubt back in the days any developers would produce their game in pixel “art” if they got the tech to produce sharp looking images like what we could do today. This remake graphic is a bit off compare to the better example like SOR4 and Mayhem Brawler, but is no where worse than original pixel “art”.

Wrong. Play it for free on emulation. Full stop. I’m perfectly okay with “encouraging piracy” when it becomes apparent that the alleged “pirates” have greater respect for the IP than its legal owners. And if you have a Switch console and an overactive conscience you can always buy the Johnny Turbo’s Arcade original version on the Nintendo Eshop.

Why do many of these retro remake type games look like Flash games from the mid 2000's? IS that what retro looks like in the minds of these developers? Flash games from the mid 2000's? Please remake an old 2D beat ' em up game with hi-res graphics, but put some effort in it. The Street Fighter II Turbo remake had pretty good hi-res graphics. This looks like a@@
