Three teenagers break into a pool.
NIGHT SWIM is used with permission from Victoria Rivera. Learn more at victoria-river....
Teenage friends Carson and Becca are enjoying a night out in Rockaway and Coney Island when they're joined by a new friend, Julie. The vibe is loose and fun, except that Carson feels a little left out and threatened by Becca's rapport with Julie, who has the devil-may-care confidence of the archetypal "cool girl."
When Julie incites their trio to break into a nearby closed-off pool at night, they encounter trouble, and Carson makes a key decision -- and tells a lie -- that has dark consequences.
Director Victoria Rivera -- along with writer Neda Jebelli and producer Camila Zavala -- has crafted a dark, bewitching yet somber take on the teenage coming-of-age story, as well as a knotty portrait of the complexities of young female friendship.
Rendered with moody, luminous light and visuals, the intimate, restless camerawork first casts a spell in its evocation of youthful potentiality. The urbane backdrop, with its vivid smears of colors against a rising darkness, summons an almost nostalgic and iconic sense of adventure and restlessness with a poetic immediacy -- a perfect playground for three young women to test their boundaries and expand their sense of possibility.
The three friends plunge themselves into this gritty milieu, and played by three excellent young actors, they navigate a thicket of flickering, often contradictory emotions. One minute one of full of bravado; in another, they're uncertain and insecure.
They seem simultaneously sophisticated in their approach to the world, yet can seem almost childlike in their longing for recognition and affection with one another. And it's this longing -- as well as her own insecurity and jealousy -- that drives Carson to make a decision that plays out in a way that will likely haunt her forever.
The coming-of-age story is a classic narrative that often revolves around a shift in consciousness that often widens a character's sense of the world or who they are. That expansion can be free-spirited and world-changing, thrilling in its sense of newness and power. But sometimes, that opening can reveal instead our potentiality for shadows and darkness, and the moral consequences of thoughtless, heedless action and selfishness.
NIGHT SWIM falls into the latter, but it has a moral, narrative and emotional intelligence that avoids simple sermonizing. The trauma that arises happens off-screen, but by rooting the "moral disaster" of the story in the messiness of human longing, flaws and vulnerability, it creates a tough yet fragile portrait of a young woman making a serious misstep. For her, the understanding of her self becomes fuller not because of a dawning sense of mission or grand adventure -- but because she realizes just how far the consequences of her actions will ripple out, likely for the rest of her life.

@@hellohowareyou9745 I get what you mean but no, the boys would probably be less reluctant to attack if they saw the other two girls. You can see that the girl in the pool sees the other girl watching from inside. She saves her friends by not saying where they are. At the end she's betrayed by both. One leaves her behind with out checking for sure if she had left, and the other, out of jealousy let evil take over and left her to be sexually assaulted or die when she didn't even bother to call the police. Complicit to the crime!

My boyfriend is a DJ and I went with him to the club one night. Right next to the DJ's booth there was a table and there where three girls there. One was extremely intoxicated. The other two friends being aware of this left her alone at the table. Before the girl became intoxicated, she was dancing with a guy whom was with 3 other friends. When the friends left, the guy the girl was dancing with sat right next to her. And his friends started roaming around. The guy eventually left. Then the girl started vomiting. The guy came by again. His friends were looking at the girl whispering to each other. One was doing a happy dance. Seeing this freaked me out. Two more men ( friends with the guys) came over and they all started whispering into each other's ears, as one signaled the others to hush. It was clear what their intentions were. I grabbed one of the security men and told him a girl was inebriated and there were vultures roaming around her. He stayed with her the rest of the night. Got her water and grabbed a pail for her to puke on. Before the night club close, her friends decided to stop by. Thankfully they took her with them. Up to this date, remembering how the men acted and seeing the way they all looked at her makes me scared. I understand this is just a film, but it's scary knowing there are people out there like the one with the girl in the white shirt portrayed in this short. I wouldn't have been able to live with myself knowing someone got hurt and I could have prevented it.

It’s difficult enough getting comfortable enough with a complete stranger to perform a sexual act, much less forcing their clothes off and assaulting them. This reminds me of a friend's daughter who I believe was left to drown in a swimming pool or pushed in while she was drunk by a "hater" or "haters" among the group of so called friends. She was found the next day by the same group of friends laying at the bottom of the pool. She was only 18 years old. In the weeks before their Summer vacation. She wrote about feeling excited about the trip, but yet felt nervous, anxious, and had a strange feeling in her gut. What was supposed to be a cool getaway with "friends" ended up in a tragedy, and I believe a murder. Sad thing is, people have gotten away with it. (Though I can't prove it) there was something fishy about the way she felt and the conversation I stumbled upon, but I can't renember exactly what was said. But there were negative comments about the girl, prior to their meet up. And I can't believe the parents didn't keep digging in for clues, investigating the matter more. They just left it at that. (What the friends, and police said) Her parents even went on to have a new kid, to cope with the grief. If I were the father, I'd still be investigating to this day, and hunting them down. I saw conversations between the parties online. And there was one girl that stood out as the "hater". Those conversations I saw of them talking online, were either erased, or are long gone. This happened about 5 years ago or more.

I don't believe she left her because she wanted her to be hurt. Then she wouldn't have come back. They were obviously very young. She was scared and bitter, and she ignored it, mostly because it is easier than to face something scary. So they left. And then she came back when she thought it would be safer. She came back, so she obviously cared. I'm also thinking that she acted this way to protect her friend. She didn't want her friend to see because her friend might have tried to help and then get hurt. Or they might have ran either way and then both of them woul've felt guilty later. Or something along that line. Also, it is easier to turn the blind eye to something scary/new/challenging. Especially when you are young and probably uneducated on the matter. I was not taught how to confront bullies in school. That's just my interpretation. :)

I think she knew exactly what was going to happen to Julie when they left her there and only went back out of a combination of curiosity and guilt. She didn't even look for Julie when she went back, she just sat by her clothing until she returned for it after being sexually assaulted all night long by three young predators. She obviously has feelings for her other friend and was extremely jealous of her friendship with Julie. You don't have to be taught not to leave someone in a situation like that. If you cannot help, call someone who can!! NEVER leave a friend or enemy to be assaulted.

when I’m sober I’ll drop friends home, I did that for a guy I know and he was so confused when I didn’t drop him 2 blocks away because it was out of my way to go to his house. Boys don’t walk each other home, they don’t text to make sure they’re safe! Everyone I know girls wise will either help their friends into an Uber and text/call them the whole way or check in every so often. Ive seen boys who have been left passed out in their own vomit because their friends wanted to go in to the club, and I’ve helped those strangers get home even though it takes away from my night and their friends didn’t even want to do the job. Most women will help other women who are alone and men who are alone in vulnerable positions. When I have been left by friends (at the end of the night when we’re all calling Uber’s) if someone’s harassing me you’ll usually find a group of girls who will come over and help or just stand near you so you don’t look so vulnerable until your Uber arrives. People like the girl in the video are disgusting male or female. Men who laugh because a girls obviously black out drunk and about to go home with their friend are disgusting, and females who stand by and do nothing are disgusting.

Everyone is bashing on the girl in the white shirt for telling the friend that the girl left. It honestly makes sense. If they were to go out there and try stopping them or confronting them, they are ultimately putting themselves at risk. They are drunk and have been swimming, so likely tired as well. They would not have stood a chance against 3 larger guys. Them leaving isn't the part you should all be upset over, it's the lack of telling the friend after they were gone and not calling the cops. After they left and got a few blocks away, there was nothing stopping the white shirt girl from pulling out her phone and dialing 911. Trespassing is not a big deal when it comes to stopping the other girl's "encounter" with the boys.

jealous girl should have said something when she saw something the boys did what they did because there was no one to help It just goes to show you how a jealous person is. I think they should have been drinking and it's unfortunate what happened to the girl and it makes the jealous girl happy great short

That was not what I was expecting at all. We need to teach our boys and men to stop being predators. When Julie looked at her with no words I felt that. This was a tough one.
