The trigger of the original Long Night, though never stated explicitly, is spelled out by the author through the fables and folklore of the story. A Song of Ice and Fire is rich with internal mythology, but we're keying on the myths having to do with bleeding stars and magic swords in this second installment of the Nightbringer series. Featuring discussion of House Dayne and Dawn, the last hero's blade of "dragonsteel," Azor Ahai and Lightbringer, the Bloodstone Emperor, and more.

I got curious about other titles and came back when I got recommended by a Bridge4 commenter, glad I did. Tarot, Vedic, and Norse mythology along with the tip about Marvel being more important than Tolkien, absolutely vital. Comments gave me "jump in the well to avoid explosion" trope, Superman and Kryptonite, Frodo and Sam murder of Euron; for example. So glad I came back! Anybody consider Khal Drogo was poisoned by the weapons rather than Maggi? I just thought of it at Bridge4's vid today, don't think I ever heard a theory about that despite Oberyn's story overlap.

The Ancient Greeks believed that bloodstone has heavenly healing powers gifted by the gods, especially when it came to healing all things related to the blood. In biblical mythology, bloodstone was born when Jesus’ blood drops fell onto a jasper gemstone at the foot of the cross. It intrigues me how the colours of bloodstone (mostly black with specs of red and green, and sometimes specs of gold) resemble the colours of Danny's dragons.
@DavidLightbringer

Yes, my first go-around with all this I dove way into the mythology and folklore of bloodstone, with the bit about the blood coming from Jesus at the cross especially catching my eye. The meteors have the blood of the slain moon "maiden" on them, if you will, and Lightbringer was consecrated with Nissa Nissa's blood., making her the Jesus of the story.

yes! and how lions represent the sun, so Lion of Night - ruler of a time with a darkened sun, a sort of a "sun of the night"! and then it all comes together in the legend of Azor Ahai: he tempered the sword in water (one of the meteorites fell into the water, as we know from the Ironborn/other legends), in a lion (he darkened the sun) and in Nissa Nissa (killed Nissa Nissa with the sword and the moon with the meteor).

My guess for house Dayne's words is "The day will come again". Which was Hurin Thalion's final battle cry at the battle of Nirnaeth Arnoediad in the Silmarillian. And we all know how much GRRM loves to draw parallels between ASIOF & LOTR. It's in line with house Dayne's time of day motif and could work as a reference to their long night origins. Also sufficiently spoilery for GRRM want it kept secret.

Does anyone think there is duality in the unmagical Doran to the magical Bloodraven and the clear, free mind of Doran to the consumed, hobbled mind of Bloodraven. Are we supposed to extrapolate that what Ice faction does in magic, Fire faction does in practicality and vice versa? Personally doubt it but trying to rule it out. More likely to me is that magic makes you a slave (sort of concluded in Preston Jacobs' most recent vid) to the "magical world's" plan.

I think Dirty Giraffe is right, it's not just Brienne's dad, but all the Lords of tarth who are called such, and their hall is Evenfall Hall. But the older city on tarth is called Morne, tied to Galladon of Morne, who's story has a ton of symbolic parallels with Dawn. Ergo all the tarth symbolism (check out their sigil) is talking about the standard mix of Azor AHai, Dawn, lasy hero, falling stars, etc. Brienne is a prime last hero figure and her symbolism is very similar to Jon Snow's.

I agree that Dawn is likely of meteorite ore, like the swords (Anguirel, Anglachel) forged by Eöl the dark elf of the Tolkien universe. Or indeed it could have been forged by the dragon lords of old from the Golden Empire of the Dawn in a slightly different process (possibly not evil) than used by the newer dragon lords of Valyria who clearly used evil blood magic. It is interesting that the meteorite swords forged by Eöl did include Anglachel, the blade that ultimately slew its owner Beleg Cúthalion, and then also turned on its next owner the Job-like Túrin Turambar. So it was essentially an evil sword with somewhat of a soul itself, but in this case it wasn’t the meteorite origin of the sword that made it evil, but that its creator’s (Eöl’s) malice was said to have gone into the sword, which thirsted for blood(!) I haven’t read Moorcock’s universe, definitely sounds like Martin was influenced by the swords in that story as well…

Question: does Starfall have a weirwood..? Hear me out. Say Dawn is the sword that brought the morning in the hands of the Last Hero. What the heck do you do with it AFTER..? You don't want it anywhere near the Wall or the North, just in case the Walkers make a grab for it. So perhaps some of a certain Northern house went south; as far south as there were men like them (not the decendents of some queen from across the waters) and presented Dawn to House Dayne for safe keeping... Or perhaps a Dayne was the Last Hero, and that's why Dawn is in their keeping - I prefer the idea that it's been sent as far south as south goes deliberately, personally. =D Keep up the awesome work, pretty please! EDIT: Just watched part 3, and if Edric Shadowchaser was the first actual Dayne of House Dayne and the Last Hero, well, poop. XD But the idea of having Dawn as far from the Wall as possible still stands! =P

Ameratsu mythology also sounds suspiciously like Ashara Dayne - dishonoured at a feast (Barristan describes it this way), hides her face from the world, someone redeems himself by bringing her the magic sword. Sounds like Ashara fell in love with Ned and became pregnant, he is forced to leave her and marry Catelyn, dishonouring her. She disappears from the world thereafter. Ned somehow redeems himself in the eyes of the Daynes when he brings Dawn back to the family.

Interesting that you bring in Venus as the Evenstar. Something worth noting, that I have not seen any theories on, is that a major character is from Evenfall Hall. Just like the lords of Starfall they also have an ancestral title. Brienne is said to be related to Ser Dunk that had a shooting star on his sigil. The only other two locations with the term 'fall' or 'fell' are both seemingly important to the story, and apparently connected to the Long Night. As with most locations on Westeros the name is descriptive. Finally, of all the hundreds of houses that are mentioned it so happens that characters from these three look to be featuring more prominently in the story as it progresses. Would suit with GRR Martin's repetition of three throughout his work. Also the term 'the dragon has three heads' would fit if Rhaegar indeed did have a dream of his 'children' leading the cause, only what he saw was his one child, a Dayne and Brienne. Dayne bringing lightbringer, or more likely, the original Ice, and Brienne bringing the crown for Jon to take up leadership of the North. So strongly suspect that Evenfall, Starfall and Winterfell had something to do with the Long Night and will be important to resolving the story of the Others.

Izanagi and Izanami (no Okami, meaning 'the god') have the usual fare of having spit form islands and such, but the myth that could be relevant here is when Izanami, izanagi's wife, for a reason I fail to recall, is banished to the undead realm. Izanagi goes to bring her back but finds her looking like Lady Stoneheart and flees. He swears that for every 100 undead sons she has, he will have 150 living to fight. Very doomsday prep.

Fun fact: I had already expected the red comet to hit Westeros when reading ACOK more than ten years ago, when Jojen told Bran about his green dream about the sea reaching Winterfell. Right before that, I had read a series of fantasy novels in which this is exactly what happens and what triggers the nain plot! 😆 I was also pondering about the myths and legends and how they can be explained by cosmic impacts, but when I started doing research on that topic four years ago, I realized that you had already done so much more about it.

this happened to me too! I was reading AGOT and they talked about the moon and the dragons, and I thought, the reason why Daenerys is geographically separate from the rest is because a comet will fall down on her camp and dragons are going to come out! the first LML essay I read was about how the birth of the dragons symbolically represents the moon disaster and I thought, finally, someone who had the same thoughts but is much smarter :)

The moon breaking myth from Qarth also made me wonder whether there was a second moon, but mainly because I was thinking about two moons for my own fantasy world! :D I might have connected to the Bloodstone Emperor myself since the description of his rule is so obviously about an impact winter, but someone had already done a much deeper analysis. Anyway, regarding the red comet and Jojen's green dream, I saw two main possibilities what it might mean: A symbolic foreshadowing if the Ironborn invasion (obviously) or a tsunami triggered by the red comet's impact in the sea, reaching Winterfell's gates. I'm still a bit disappointed that it wasn't the latter one, but this might not be the end fot this theory anyway. Although I must admit that I'm still a bit sceptical about a future impact because the consequences might be too devastating to overcome them in the remaining books. At least I don't think that there will be another moon impact since the loss of the remaining one would make thinks definitely worse, not better.

Great analysis! I would like to mention the geographical notion that planetos is actually round like earth, that means that a great empire like the empire of down who claimed the whole far East beyond the bones might've actually ventured more east to find the sunset sea and get to westeros, and might've even gone south to sothyros, that will mean that the vast apocalypse in westeros named the long night is actually the same as the one in the east, it could've even touched sothyros and that would explain the horrible scenery described there, so when you think about it Azor ahai being the last hero or someone related to him is geographically very possible, as he could've fought both the lion of night and the night king or the great other who all could be the same person or corpse or whatever, so he followed him and his minions or white walkers around the globe to bring an end to the long apocalyptic night and bring on the dawn of spring! It all adds out

One little thing, the flood myths being based on post glacial floods is merely an interesting idea, its incredibly hard to prove
@DavidLightbringer
@DavidLightbringer 5 ай бұрын
yeah it's definitely responsible for some of them but it's often hard to say with any given myth. Sometimes they can find the exact local flood. but I think some skepticism goes much too far when it concerns mythology. some experts dismiss any conclusions that involve mythology out of hand. I do think it's a safe conclusion that the reason there are flood myths in almost every ancient culture is because 8 to 10,000 years ago there was a lot of flooding.
@forodinssake9570

@@DavidLightbringer i think there's a good case for some myths to be ancient, like the myth of a dog guarding the afterlife, but the floods happen way too much way too often for it to be the most plausible possibility

Okay, here’s a tinfoil theory, please note I've watched these out of order: You’ve talked about the possibility of two swords, you’ve also talked about the story of Azor Azai and the Bloodstone Emperor being entangled. Azor Azai’s sword is meant to be red, yet it is meant to be lightbringer. My theory is that you are right, Azor Azai is the bloodstone Empower and not a hero. But what if there are two swords, they were both forged out of the Heart of a meteor from the same event, but they were different meteors. The Amethyst Empress is Nissa Nissa, the founder of House Dayne is her child. (And also the child of the Bloodstone Emperor.) The story we know as the forging of Lightbringer is actually the forging of the Bloodstone blade - but Dawn is Lightbringer.
@DavidLightbringer
@DavidLightbringer 2 жыл бұрын
This is actually very close to my favored solution! In think AA’s Lightbringer was a black sword, made from the black meteor. Everything about the symbolism associated with Lightbringer suggests that. Dawn I think is leftover from the glory days of the Great Empire, and I’m hoping the fact that it’s white and not black means you can make a magic sword without accursed blood blood magic... but probably not, because as I mentioned yesterday in the stream about Brienne, The sort of somatic point of writing about all these cursed fantasy swords is to convey the fact that a sword is only an implement of death and killing. All swords are cursed in that sense
@Karlandra
@Karlandra 2 жыл бұрын
@@DavidLightbringer Maybe the forger of Dawn used blood magic but not death magic (their own blood) and tied the blade to House Dayne?

Planetos is a globe, the great empire of the dawn is actually directly across the western sea. That’s why the sea stone chair is on the iron islands. Arya is sailing west at the end of the show, so she will be the one to discover it. But the shadow is in between Westeros and Essos. The shadow is what’s left of the broken moon causing a continuous partial eclipse
@DavidLightbringer
@DavidLightbringer Жыл бұрын
I’ve heard that theory but I think it’s definitely a magical blight like Valyria
@B4D_5USHI
@B4D_5USHI Жыл бұрын
@@DavidLightbringer hmm. Wouldn’t the shadow of a broken moon left over from a blood magic spell count as a magical blight? Also, I haven’t watched nearly enough of your amazing work yet, I only discovered the channel yesterday. What do you think of the idea of the “lord of light” being the spirit of the BSE continuing to live on and influence events? That would explain the fire mages resurrection abilities (necromancy) the fire swords (blood magic) and a lot of other things. Also, when Quaithe says “you must go west to go easy, north to go south” etc in the same conversation where she tells Dany to go to Ashai that could be a literal statement. It would also explain the five forts and the wall, because the far north past the frostfangs would be the path to essos, and the wall would guard Westeros while the five forts guarded essos.

Interesting that Dawn may be made of meteoric metal. You would practically need magic to forge anything substantial from it for how brittle it is in reality.
@DavidLightbringer
@DavidLightbringer 2 жыл бұрын
Well doesn’t the composition vary from meteorite to meteor right? And of course there is king Tutts dagger, which was forged from meteoric iron. But yeah I’m guessing magic was involved and we aren’t supposed to be thinking too too technically there.

Very Graham Hancock, I love it. My only issue is that we already had one comet/bleeding star at the beggining of the story (agot/acok) so it would be strange for it to come every 10.000 thousand years fly by planetos and then return a couple years later to crash and create the long night

The Lord of Tarth is called the Evenstar.. Is there a Morningstar too? The house symbol has suns and moons iirc, so if Tarth is being linked to Venus, and if Brienne will inherit her father, will she become a Venutian lady? The Beauty? Venus, btw, rose from the sea foam and literally has no mother. Also, isn't it a bit strange that Tarth's castle is called Evenfall hall, even though it's an Eastern laying island? Wouldn't it be a good place to catch a beautiful sunrise?
