She ends up killing herself before he gets the chance to confess to her, so he never knows if she loved him back. He tries to kill himself so that he can be with her, but the unknown (not knowing if she loved him back) seemingly tethers him to Earth. Simply put, he can’t bring himself to commit suicide. He ends up finding the girls diary and reads it in hopes of finding out what he meant to her. If he was successful or not, we may never know.
