Well, I guess there _is_ a problem with the Academy, after all.
@SplinterInYourEye9 жыл бұрын
Viper Joe Other examples of how the Academy is messed up is that Lego movie didn't get nominated for best animated (on the technicality that there is a sequence with live actors) or how Big Hero 6, a fun but forgettable movie, won best animated picture over masterpieces like Song of the Sea, and The Tale of Princess Kaguya.

It could just be me but I noticed that Lou's eyes also seemed as if they were cameras, honing in on every person he meets, studying them and then successfully manipulating them. His gaze is unsettling and his personality is equally chilling. Jake is such a great actor.

I was rooting for Lou until the last act of the film. I mean, you kinda knew he was a psychopath, but at least ya know, he wasn't hurting anyone (well except for the security guy at the very beginning of the film). Then he killed his competitor, let the robbers go, and basically killed his partner in the end. As for the movie itself, it made me feel so damn uneasy. I don't think I've ever been as unrestless while watching a movie before.

He rides along like we do and gets more and more uncomfortable as the story progresses. Gyllenhaal's performance was no doubt the best, but Rick was the character I cared about the most.

The entire thing about loneliness and being isolated can cause a lot of problems which does lead to depression. Maybe after that, it could lead to even more worse, it can also lead someone to go insane and cause a massacre. Reality can prove it this sort of thing to through insanity, like that youtuber who made these videos about how life is so unfair and girls never have him attention. He killed those people in his flat and then killed more and left the rest injured after he did his final video before his suicide. Mental health is the worst thing and people can be so cruel to them and create demons, it can happen and that's why we call this planet a cold cruel world, nobody deserves to be alone or left out

people dont really get what this film is about, its about the pain of loneliness and the desperation of acceptance, that one scene where hes ironing his clothes watching a movie and he turns and starts laughing at nobody else in the room, his odd fascination with his plants, his wildly inappropriate relationship with nina, he is so removed from society he has no idea how to behave. there is zero fear when lou is behind a camera because thats his reality, thats how he feels accepted, how he feels people finally recognize him, when he stares down the gunman that shoots his partner, he doesn't even bat an eye even though he could die at any second. lou is a fascinating animal.

Nitsujin Serinai i think the end of the movie is really polarizing. I personally get that what the movie wanted to tell us woudnt be fullfilled if Louis would die(or go to prison), but in my eyes he was nth, but a sociopath who just started to have more power and less boundries. Which are basically the most dangerous people of the word so I really wanted him in prison or dead..just away from society before he can do more damage which I m sure he would.
@Ninja07Keaton9 жыл бұрын
Kunoichi4ever4 You make it sound like ambition is a terrible thing to have? You cannot build a life for yourself without getting your hands dirty now can you? Sometimes you have to tear people down in order to build yourself up. That's the way major corporations do it, that's the way America does it, and it's worked pretty well so far.
@Kunoichi4ever49 жыл бұрын
Ninja07Keaton my point is that if you are willing to sacrifice multiple people without any hint of guilt while being totally composed you are most probably a sociopath ...ambition is a great thing . Letting people die as part of your plan to better your position is not, that s why what he did is called a crime. It is a part of our world, but i dont think that it makes our world better ... ppl believe nowadays that the only way to be wealthy is to go against a law and morals, but in the end if we all believe this then the higher you get the bigger danger you are in. you wont last long there and everything you did was for nothing. and even if you lalst you will live a paranoid life not being able to enjoy the money you make fully ...

The review for this is exactly what I thought also. The idea of the main character being insane and understanding them is truly a difficult task to display on screen where thoughts are hard to show. The moment where the character witnesses an accident, and you see in his eyes he has the realization of what he wants to do, film bloody news, the soundtrack starts creeping in its instensity. Again, I agree with your response to this film. It's wonderful and contains a brilliant central performance and a cracking script, something far too often overlooked in Hollywood. I also agree that better direction would have elevated the film even further, though it was by no means bad. My biggest flaw of this film would be the soundtrack, which, when compared to everything else being so good, stood out as being woefully under-par.

Well, at least your 'heads up' lowered (significantly) my expectations for Nightcrawler, so I'll be glad to be 'surprised' by it. ;-)

I don't think you should be doubtful about what Chris said, he just kinda has an obsession with suspenseful, artsy movies (I don't mean that in a bad way). so it's just his personal opinion. I'm pretty sure lots of people will like Nightcrawler better, but at the end of the day it's just all preference, so don't worry! :)

Chris loves Drive, it was a masterpiece in his and many other people's opinions. I personally need to give it a second watch. But that's why he said Nightcrawler wasn't as good, it's not saying much since Drive was pretty much perfect for him.
@SilkyFetus9 жыл бұрын
I think he meant more that Drive is a better directed movie which I agree with. Gyllenhaal is probably my favorite actor and I agree that this is his best performance. This is a different type of movie than Drive so it's hard to compare them. But do yourself a favor and check this one out.

"When you don't see an actor, that means that's a great performance." That's so true. When I see The Godfather I, The Godfather Part II, and Scarface, I don't see Al Pacino, I see Michael Corleone and Tony Montana.

my god i loved this movie. it had so much suspense just watching characters just sit there and talk. there was a scene where it was jake, and the lady who worked at the news station talking in a restaurant, and as the scene goes on and you learn more about jake's character. you become so involved, intrigued, and disturbed you don't even notice that the scene goes on for 9 minuets!

This was a good review, as you were describing how the writing of the movie almost has your rooting for the character it made me think of the TV show Dexter. I always felt that it was curious that a serial killer was the main person in a TV show that I was hoping would "get away with it" versus wanting him to be discovered and caught. I was on the fence at first about this movie but now I want to see it.

I have been looking forward to this review ever since I seen the plot summary on IMDb like 2 months ago. I am so thrilled that it's as good as it looks. I could tell right away from the trailer, it was going to be one hell of a film and Chris giving the movie an A grade, is the last bit of nudge I needed to go see it. Thanks Chris.

Saying he is a psychopath or sociopath is just to simple.. By that you are reducing a well written character into a one dimensional character.. He is more than that. He is a product of the society around him that rewards this kind of voyeuristic behavior.

Dude you really need to stop spoiling so much in your reviews, I would bet the majority who are watching this haven't seen the movie yet! When you say something like "I was trying to figure out who the antagonist of the movie was, and I think it was Jake Gyllenhaal" thats giving away what I can surmise is a large part of the movie. C'mon man!

Everything you say is spot on, though I will say I adore the visual aspects of this film, the way it was filmed was gorgeous. And I love it. the acting is superb (Jake G fan since October Sky)

Damn another A I'm going to be running out of money after watching so many films. I wasn't going to watch this film but I might not because of this review and I saw Gone Girl because of Chris review. Gone Girl was an okay film I'd say about an A- but it was still enjoyable just didn't really like the ending. Aside from that theirs still some other's to watch. Now I want to see Birdman since everyone is saying it's good.

An A- is a grade indicating something more than just "ok". Now if it was in the "C" grade then it would qualify in the "ok" category.

I loved the main character "Lou Bloom" played by Jake Gyllenhaal. One line in the movie that really won me over was: "What if I told you that my problem wasn't that I don't understand people, but I just don't like them." I felt so connected to that, it really hit home with how my life is. It's like, I know how to be social, and I have good social skills, but I just don't like to be around people. I don't like people, period. There's nothing wrong with that. I just prefer to live a life of solitude. That's what I loved about the film, the main character lived a life of solitude and still managed to become successful

I don't think he wanted the money, it seemed as if he wanted something more. I would say he wanted to be successful, following his own self-interest to try to rise to the top. If you can control how much you will get paid instead of letting the buyer control the price, you control the buyer. Thus in the end it seems as if he attempts to not only broaden Video Production News (is that right I forgot now lol) but to control the entirety of channel 6 news. To the point where channel 6 relies on his footage to even compete with other news stations. What a smart self taught dude am I right?
@gotf8 жыл бұрын
Drive may be filled with interesting symbolism and metaphors but this movie is better because the acting is so good it's almost unreal. Using symbolism to tell a story is great but acting Gyllenhaal does in this movie is more powerful than Drive's stylistic approach.

"Nightcrawler" is the name for a freelance journalist, who's not part of a union (so not bound by ethical constraints, but can get in lots of trouble) and films footage of crimes or other things like that and then sells the footage to news stations, usually for a lot of money.

Chris, not too bitch about it, but have you noticed that when you like a movie essentially you always say the same thing? You liked _John Wick_ a lot, and if I would've "bleeped" the name of the movie and the name of the actor you were talking about we would've been left with essentially the same information: "best performance I've seen", "best movie of the year", "this or that blew me away", that sort of thing. Don't take this the wrong way, assuming you would ever read this comment. It would be nice to hear you using a different language from time to time. Regards, and can't wait for your review of _Interstellar_!
@Itried20takennames4 жыл бұрын
Mau Jo Somewhat agree...but what are the other options? I loved this movie...the acting was terrible? He also deliberately doesn’t do a scene-by-scene spoiler heavy review (those are fine, but the purpose is that you can still see the movie and be surprised). This means often just saying the plot was good, the cinematography was great-looking, etc?

I am a massive comic book movie fan. Marvel, DC and all of them. I grew up reading those superhero comics and they are now being adapted into exciting, funny and, at their very best, intelligent movies. At their worst, comic book movies are no more tired and junky than the other bad, bland action films that come out of the film industry. At their very best, they are genuine works of art. Same goes for any genre of entertainment. I don't bash Twilight fans for liking what they do. I can't get into it, but if that is what they dig, then they should enjoy the books/films as much as they like. You can bash on comic book movies, but it won't change the fact that I (and many others) love them, and will continue to want to see more of them. Vote with your dollar. If you don't like the comic book movies, don't spend your time/money on them. But you can bet that I certainly will.

Ryan Abouchedid The truth of your statement is based solely on your own opinion and personal taste. I could say that: "the Mona Lisa isn't art. Shakespeare isn't art. Iron Man 3 isn't art." Are they not art because I say they aren't? I think all those things are art, but if someone doesn't like the Mona Lisa, does that make its artistic value null and void? Art is a nebulous concept. At best, you can define "Art" as "that which is created with intent to stimulate the senses." In other words, Art is something which someone creates with an intent to provide an audience with an experience. Be it visual, auditory, culinary, or anything else. Music, theatre, cinema, cooking, dance, writing, painting--they are all art. What film would you consider to be "Art?" If you said, "The Shawshank Redemption," for example, how would you define it as art? Is it because it has an emotional impact? A thoughtfully written script? Beautiful lighting and cinematography? Characters with depth and reflections of real human emotion? I will argue that Iron man or The Dark Knight possess every one of those qualities as well. The Shawshank Redemption elicits a powerful, emotional reaction. So does Iron man or The Dark Knight. In any of these movies, I hurt alongside those characters, and thrill at their triumphs. The fact that one of them dresses as a bat, or the other builds a robot suit, while the first is just a good man in a terrible place is simply the window dressing of their stories. And a written story, no matter how outlandish, goofy, or even downright badly crafted it is, is always art. You are not obligated by any means to LIKE every kind of art, however. Enjoy what speaks to you.
