Just a conspiracy theory here but what if story 2 was actually even darker than imagined? He mentions he's not the golden child. His parents are out when the "break in" happens. The thieves know his name. He didn't mention hearing anyone breaking in upstairs, just quiet footsteps. What if his parents hired a hit on their own child and when the hitman failed, they staged a robbery? Would explain why they were so upset that "he didn't defend their property". They were masking their anger that he was still alive & not "tragically killed" in a robbery gone wrong.

He could have still made a phone call without wi-fi. It’s a phone call. Not getting online. Remember way back when cell phones first came out? Most phones didn’t hook up to WiFi.
