NiGHTS was successful on the Sega Saturn, but the Sega Saturn was a major flop in West, just slightly more successful than the Atari Jaguar and 3DO Interactive Multiplayer. Clearly games like NiGHTS didn't dramatically help the Sega Saturn in any major significant way unless you were a Sega Saturn owner or hardcore Sega fan. Its much like Okami, all the praise and perfect scores it got didn't help it from being a commercial flop, nor did it protect Glover Studios from being dismantled by Capcom.

Its really upsetting that art that overall is received well by people, perhaps even beloved and adored, just doesnt matter if its capital profit tanks (or never had potential to profit at all). money over merit makes no sense. and yet.

They really waited until NiGHTS started getting forgotten and irrelevant then finally chose to make a sequel with a slapped on gimmick, then completely abandon the franchise when it's limp gimmicky comeback wasn't a immediate overwhelming success And then throw a pachinco machine on it's rotting corpse just for good measure a decade later Jesus, all that potential thrown away with total mismanagement

It would certainly work, she's got a very expressive, simplistic design in the original, and I'm certain her shape-shifting abilities would be put to good use. The world of The Night Dimension has so much going on and so much backstory that it would work perfectly to fill a 12-24 episode show, and animation is the perfect medium to express and play with the human mind.

NiGHTS was really an INSPIRED game, in the best way;- Just pure surreal gaming brilliance. I remember the HMV store window displays for it's launch back in 1996- it was really the Saturn's last big commercial push to try and compete with the PS1... In terms of sales it was not the system seller SEGA was hoping for, but as an artistic expression of the medium it was head and shoulders above anything else at the time and a true generational leap in concept/design/gameplay and graphics from Sonic. NiGHTS was the perfect encapsulation of SEGA's innovation and creativity at that point in time. I hope one day we get a NiGHTS 3 that plays like the first game and removes all the filler from the sequel.

Sega: we make great IPs and then abandon them to milk the Sonic franchise.
@Thomas-te2lg

That's because Sonic sells, whereas a good chunk of Sega's other IPs generally don't sell that well. All the praise and acclaim a game or franchise can get means squat if it sells poorly.

Nights is the "Shadow" from Jungian psychology. Nights is male if you are male and female if you are female, from your perspective, though is female in Claris' stages and male in Elliot's. Interestingly, Nights is also the first character from a video game that exists in reality, in that order- if you see him in a dream, that's the real one. Although generally dreams with areas where he could even play a role are exceedingly rare and would need quite a unique stew of subconscious issues to occur. Or I guess you could dream lucidly, which would also work.

Great game from a great time for games, but on a greatly underappreciated console. I loved my Saturn back in the day, despite only having a handful of games for it, and this was on the list. That said, I'd love to see an info dump video for Astal, if such a thing is possible. Bit of a one-off title, but was utterly fantastic.

NiGHTS is neither male nor female - their entire function having left Wiseman is to merge with the children in order to accomplish things. Each game has one boy and one girl - when they merge with the boy they are male, when they merge with the girl they are female. I always interpreted it as they sorta merge consciousnesses, becoming a bit of both of them. But thank you for the recommendation for Rodea! I prefer the first game over the second for various reasons and hearing that because of this I might like Rodea makes me eager to give it a try :)

As a SEGA QA tester at SOA back when NiGHTS Journey of Dreams was in test, I tried my hardest not to be spoiled by any Journey of Dreams content. I was a Wii standards specialist though, and had to test parts of the title from time to time. I'm sorry if this kills your original idea that NiGHTS is a male character based on the Archie comics (which I loved, especially since they were drawn by Patrick Spaziante), but we were always told to refer to NiGHTS as "she" when recording bugs, not "he" or even "it". Also, if you were a fan of the original Sega Saturn pad (I actually had the Saturn 3D controller, but I didn't like it), you could buy an import of Darkstalkers Collection for PS2 that included a purple Sega Saturn controller that would connect to the Playstation consoles. Also, I think it's worth noting that there seemed to be a NiGHTS game in development for Xbox 360 (although it could have just been a quick test to see what they could do with the console). But yeah, there was one 360 test console with a fully 3D NiGHTS title on it. Granted, it crashed every 30 seconds or so and only had one barren grassy field to fly around on. Obviously nothing ever came of it. What I want to know is if this copy of NiGHTS Journey of Dreams signed by the development team is worth anything. Thanks for the video about my favorite game of all time, it really brought me back.

Air NiGHTS was actually the title of the Dreamcast game that never came to fruition. Unfortunately, it never made it out of the very early design phase. And aside from the title, the only other thing we really know about it was that Naka wanted it to utilize a gyroscopic gamepad, an idea Sega had originally been toying with as an add-on (one of many) for the Sega Saturn 3D pad. As for Journey of Dreams, the reason it doesn't feel as smooth is because you're forced to deal with the ridiculous octagonal gate that Nintendo used to place around joysticks. What's an even bigger disappointment is the way the scoring system was pared down. It's nowhere near as deep as in the original game. :\

I was a late adopter for the Sega Saturn, and one of the games I bought for the SS was this game. I also currently own the game from the XBox store on my Series S. For me, the biggest issue I had with the game was the extremely touchy control. The objective of the game is to fly through the levels racking up link chains, during flight for points, but that was surprisingly difficult because touchy control meant the player would collide with an object, stopping the player dead in his tracks. Also, during fast flight there simply wasn't enough of a margine, (due to 4:3 television monitors), so fast flight meant more collisions with the scenery. I do suggest buying this game because, at the end of the day, I can see what the producers were trying to envision for a new i.p., and it is fun. However, if bought I do suggest playing in HD mode. This, at least, allows the player enough time to plan moves accordingly.

Daniel Ibbertson Sony Vegas eh? I have tried doing some of these effects that you do in your videos here using videopad, but honestly, the software becomes very laggy when using multiple effects on multiple video files. Is Vegas user friendly?

Phantasy Star Online 1&2 also included NiGHTS himself in the game in a mission if memory serves, plus an item you could buy in game that you could use to play the NiGHTS theme whenever you wanted. (Same with the Burning Rangers theme.)

The articles I read about this game at the time confused me to no end with all the talk about the "3D" controller. I kept wondering what it was all about, making theories like maybe it was pressure sensitive to go into the screen by pushing it. When I finally got the game I discovered that it was actually a simple 2.5D game (with crappy 3D sections if you screw up) and the controller was just an analog stick. The game plays well enough, but people tend to make it sound like more than what it really is for some reason.

i always said Nights was sonic in a flying dream world. thats how i saw it but again Saturn cannot be understated how well it used the color palette and its games along with the turbografx are almost always color bombs that are great to look at.

I couldn't click PLAY fast enough when I spotted this TCH of NiGHTS. Enjoyed the game for years. Another aspect of the gameplay is finding how to pull off high-points infinite links loops - tough to do (nearly impossible without a Sega 3D controller) but so rewarding. Nights: JoD on Wii was fun but I felt it had lost that something special , and had too much cutscenes and dialogue. I enjoyed the Nightopians AI and the changing music too.

I was always really interested in this game, but to this day I never played it. I remember that controller and the game and it all made me want a Saturn, but then I got a Playstation and totally forgot all about it. Also, Speilberg should use that controller in Ready Player One.

A quick fact check. The PS3 game is actually upscaled from the PS2 release. PSO ep 1&2 had a quest online that featured NiGHTS (actually it was how you unlocked the Score Attack mini game).
