Portuguese literature is one of the most fascinating and interesting things Portugal has. All the authors write with such deep passion. And the culture and sights are amazing as well. I am proud to be Portuguese even though my country is very small geographically speaking we have an entire cultural empire like Fernando Pessoa quotes in 'A Mensagem'. :')

This is a wonderful and remarkable film which Ive just seen on BBC2. Its an intriguing story about a part of history given little light. A superbly understated Jeremy Irons gradually unearths the story, Lisbon is seen in its regal and coastal splendour. The story embracing anti facist resistance, love,family tensions,mystery,betrayal and the meaning of life and love. Also about breaking out of your confines to follow a dream. Non Pasaran.R

Such movies to even have been made, already required hurdle-clearing which includes getting those brilliant but also Hollywood-exposure actors like Jeremy Irons and Christopher Lee, and then making it in English in the hopes of having a wider release. Though to be fair for all I know, the book it was based on was originally in English anyways.

The Sombre Seventies was a grim decade everywhere but in Portugal, the most underdeveloped nation in Europe, it was dire. With endemic unemployment, tens of thousands living in shanty towns, millions desperate to leave, the last of the Continent’s fascist states was ripe for revolution. The film catches the change from the violent oppression I remember in that era to the southern charm of today, when a Lisbon woman standing in front of a man about to return to the icy conformity of Berne would sound so reasonable when she said “Why don’t you just stay.” I hope he did - I do so hope he did!

So this professor in Switzerland saves a woman from jumping off a bridge, and brings her to class with him. He leaves her sitting on a chair and she wanders off. He sort of goes looking for her, forgetting all about the class he was teaching, and finds a book in her coat. He seems to forget all about the girl, who is an imminent suicide risk, and instead goes off in pursuit of the book's deceased author, who was dedicated to overthrowing Salazar's dictatorship. At this point I lost interest in the movie. Wouldn't the professor's primary moral obligation be to save the life of the young woman? Instead he becomes preoccupied with an abstraction. As if uncovering the history of the Resistance is more pressing a matter than rescuing an actual human life.
@tosht25157 жыл бұрын
McAllister Pulswaithe After rescuing her it was supposed to be apparent that she was no longer a risk. She was in fact the one who requested that she walk with him to which he nonchalantly agreed. The professor did not have to drag her away from another attempt. If he thought she were still suicidal, he would have alerted the local authorities to the bridge after she left the classroom. And no one would ever assume the woman would travel all the way back to Lisbon to commit suicide. That was never the reason for his trip. As for leaving his responsibilities behind, the opening scene was a crystal clear indication of a mundane perhaps even dreadful life. Going off on an adventure was actually the obvious thing to do.

just funny how the old Portuguese lady as a better English than all the young ones in the movie :) . I know we can give the excuse its supposed to be a Portuguese person so its normal the English sounds with a big accent . but we can do way better Look at Alba Baptista no accent at all in warrior nun . Even the older actors have better English than the younger owns . they should have done a bit more of an effort . they would have gotten a bigger audience
@margaridaferreira80293 жыл бұрын
Actually they were all supposed to speak with an accent (foreigners playing portuguese and portuguese actors), just to show that they were "speaking portuguese" and not the english we hear in the film. I actually thought it was a nice touch, almost like they did in Allo-Allo.
