Hello Robert Houghton ! Nightwish fans here, your reaction just appeared on our radar.. Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band, performing here at Wacken Open Air festival 2013, in front of a 82k+ audience. About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra, London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners. As I could see, you both enjoyed the performance, and appreciate musicianship of all band members, but most of all - the stellar vocals and charisma of Floor Jansen, our Dutch metal queen. You explained pretty well at the end the meaning of the lyrics, cool :) If you'll continue this path, you'll find a lot of meaningful lyrics. Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory): " Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland. Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. Marco Hietala is the Bassist and vocals .And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen . Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition. Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her. There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps. I want to welcome you to the Nightwish community. I hope you like them enough to continue the journey. Believe me Nightwish will surprise you with their songs. You will never know what to expect. They are unbelievable live. I want to warn you that Nightwish fans are hard core. So be prepared. lol " Hope you'll continue this journey with us, so I'll drop here a list of songs with the current lineup of the band you may like (please consider this list of links only as "a tip of the iceberg", an indication that they have a vast and very diverse repertoire, and not as something mandatory): "Romanticide" live at Wacken 2013 (metal) kzbin.info/www/bejne/sKvCaIJ5eLafjtU "Storytime" live at Wacken 2013 (uplifting vocals) kzbin.info/www/bejne/pqfOiqqFf7-ChLc "Ever Dream" live at Wacken 2013 (uplifting vocals) kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z4nMZaFuma-WfJo "Song Of Myself" live at Wacken 2013 (dark/metal) kzbin.info/www/bejne/ooLYZoSgnsl7jck "Dead Boy's Poem" - live Buenos Aires 2018 (soulful ballad) kzbin.info/www/bejne/iWmoZH9tnMx_g68 "Ghost River" live at Wacken 2013 (metal) kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZmbImqeaYqp0bKs "Dark Chest Of Wonders" live at Wacken 2013 (metal, the greatest show opener ever) kzbin.info/www/bejne/haeydWmumsijnpY "My Walden" live at Wembley 2015 (celtic / folk) kzbin.info/www/bejne/oZ_UlnxuZZyNors "Sleeping Sun" live at Tampere 2015 (ballad) kzbin.info/www/bejne/qKTSpZ-wp56qhNk "The Islander" live at Tampere 2015 (Marco in charge..) kzbin.info/www/bejne/kKCbn5aBlJqesMU "Stargazer" live at Tampere 2015 (operatic vocals / metal) kzbin.info/www/bejne/hJmopnSGjtKSi8k "Sahara" live at Tampa 2016 (middle eastern vibe) kzbin.info/www/bejne/ooXZipmClpmKos0 "Slaying The Dreamer" live at Buenos Aires 2018 (metal) kzbin.info/www/bejne/rXKXZaeglrVopJI "I Want My Tears Back" live at Buenos Aires 2018 (celtic / folk vibe) kzbin.info/www/bejne/inOylZqun8djoa8 "Devil & The Deep Dark Ocean" live In Buenos Aires 2018 (metal) kzbin.info/www/bejne/qmOZo5Ksdr6EZrM "Weak Fantasy" live at Tampere 2015 (dark metal) kzbin.info/www/bejne/d3-VZGyGl9aVoNE "7 Days To The Wolves" live at Wembley 2015 (dark metal) kzbin.info/www/bejne/jqfWl6p3hceKjsU And if you want to hear Floor growling :) then try "Yours Is An Empty Hope" live at Mexico City in 2015 kzbin.info/www/bejne/eqbaimSaYrB8qdU Last but not the least - they just released their 9th studio album on April 10th 2020 named "Human :||: Nature" - just take a peek to their official playlist: kzbin.info/aero/PLihZ3gi5Yvzc0pfH2cbNKUUX8o3pb8eVg (for example: "Shoemaker", the 3rd track from this album, tells the story of Eugene Shoemaker, one of the founders of planetary science, whose ash was sent on the Moon after his death, as a tribute from the scientific community ..) You can also react to Floor Jansen "tapping" other musical genres in Beste Zangers 2019 (TV show from Netherlands) here is a playlist made by Floor herself (start listen it in reverse order..): kzbin.info/aero/PL8iSYWeQhlimgUnWw1FDdiJN0msPzqpLo To understand better the context of this show you should visit also Jenniezelf's YT channel (En subtitled materials): kzbin.info For entire episodes of the show with En translation, you should check Denise Hofs's DM channel: www.dailymotion.com/xpinkeu/videos In these pandemic times, Floor Jansen has decided to make covers for us, which you can find on her YT channel kzbin.info/door/xy4Ijz2QKXXJaREs-isxwA - there are already 4 covers there, the first is "Let It Go" from "Frozen" (8 weeks ago, already over 1.931M views), the second - "Alone" from "Heart" (released 6 weeks ago) - 767K and counting. Then 4 weeks ago she dropped the third cover, in Dutch: "Is Dit Nou Later" from Stef Bos - already 221K views in 4 weeks. Just before Christmas she made a powerful cover of "Ave Maria" - already 196K views. Just this friday she added a remastered / remixed version of the first one, "Let It Go" - already 77k.. Thank you! Waiting for more Nightwish reactions. All the best from RO. Stay safe.

Fear of the Dark was and is amazing. The Keyboard player for Nightwish, Tuomas, is incredibly talented. He writes just about everything that Nightwish puts out. If you want a full example of his musical gifts, check out the new album Human Nature. The second part of the CD is strictly his work. It is absolutely phenomenal.

Loved your attention to the lyrics! The songwriting is so moving and such a haunting expression of heartache. It really does feel a lot like a siren song, the song knows it's being self-destructive: "My fall will be for you/if you be the one to cut me, I'll bleed forever" but it's so relatable. The climactic lyric after eight minutes of build up is so sad: "Like the advent of May, I'll be there when you say 'Time to never hold our love'" and then the backing chorus lyrics change to "You were the one to cut me, so I'll bleed forever." I appreciated how you noticed that the songwriter is essentially voicing a cry for help, the writer really was not doing well at the time this was written (well over a decade ago) though the parties presumably involved in the break up seem to be in a healthier place nowadays (the more recent song "How's the Heart?" is quite a contrast).

Pastor Rob, i loved the reaction and the zeal with which you dove into the song. You really made the effort to look at this from every angle that you could. I don't see many people who look as deeply on a first listen to piece of music. I did find your commentary on platitudes concerning relationships rather entertaining in that most have been uttered by my self or by friends to me. I tend to learn the hard way. One small thing I have learned over the years lead me to tell my wife something at the very beginning of our relationship that took her several years to fully understand. Our relationship began after she had experienced the passing of her husband and she was concerned for me if the relationship did not move in the direction that at the beginning we both hoped it would. I simply smiled and told her that I was happy before you came along and I will be happy after you are gone. This simple and I admit callous sounding sentence sums up what I had to learn the hard way. That no earthly relationship will ever 'complete" you. That no person can "make" you happy. And that it is enormously selfish to ask that impossible task of someone. It means that I was whole, complete, and happy with myself and that none of that is conditional on her being in my life. Our relationship expands what I experience, but it is no less complete with or without it. Two broken people does not make a whole single person. Two less than complete people will never add up to two complete people. Each person in a relationship has to be whole or something will always be missing. I am not whole on my own, but it is not my wife that makes me whole, nor is it me that makes her whole. We both have God in our lives and it is he who made both of us whole before our relationship began.

Thanks for the best analysis of the lyrics to this heavily-reacted song. You really listened to it! Indeed it is about the craving or desire that persists for lost love, and how hard it is to avoid getting bitter about such losses. Aside from all the references to Adam & Eve, "the adoring Beast", an angel, a siren, etc... This song seems to have a lament for a child never had with the "Ghost Love" of the title. That seems to be who the angel carries off "without care for love and loss." Which the lamenter can deal with only by becoming as open to love as a child again ("redeem me into childhood, show me myself without a shell") which is an almost faith like message. Of course the lamented lost love she still feels gets one heck of a sendoff!

I had listened it "million" times when I realised what the choir was singing in the background; "My fall will be for you My love will be in you If you be the one to cut me I'll bleed forever" It´s like some kind of a confession of love...it just makes me tear up every time...Especially the change in the end: "My fall will be for you My love will be in you You were the one to cut me So I'll bleed forever"

Tuomas (keyboards) is one of the best composers of our time, Floor (lead vocal) is arguably the finest singer of our time, Marko (bass) not only plays bass, but also guitar... and he sings as well (he actually just won the Masked Singer Finland), and Troy (not featured in this song) is also a multi-instrumentalist that sings. Then we have Jukka (drums) who reminds me of Bonham with how he just pounds the crap out of the drums with such passion and energy, and then Emmpu (guitar) that sometimes gets overlooked with Tuomas and Floor shining so brightly... but he's a fantastic metal guitarist without ego. His solos are always perfect for the song. He can shred, but he never lets that overtake the song, more often than not choosing something more melodic. You'll also notice he's the band's jokester and is almost always smiling. The whole band has too much talent, lol, it's just not fair to other artists! As you'll see, the Nightwish Army will come hard, with lots of suggestions for more reactions, and they are all good, lol. NW has been around since the 90's, so the back catalog is huge. That said, most seem to prefer the newer/live songs that feature Floor. Without going into a huge discussion, Floor is the 3rd lead singer in Nightwish, and most would argue she is the most versatile, being able to sing all the songs from all Nightwish eras as well if not better than the originals. Nightwish touches on some more complex themes, and many of the songs are very personal to Tuomas. GLS you just reacted to is a gateway drug, lol, to the world of Nightwish, but it is also 1 of 3 songs considered the trinity in Nightwish circles along with Poet And The Pendulum and The Greatest Show On Earth. As some have mentioned prior to my comments, I would hold off on those two until you have some more Nightwish under your belt. They are complex compositions with deep meaning and it would be beneficial to "know" a bit more about Tuomas and Nightwish before you react to those, and both I would recommend looking up online first, researching the meaning before you do the reaction (assuming you're going to continue your Nightwish journey). I would highly recommend considering Storytime and Song of Myself from this same show, along with Romanticide and Yours Is An Empty Hope. Weak Fantasy and Dead Boy's Poem are two of my personal favs you might enjoy, but regardless of the path you take, I would also recommend hitting the live version of The Islander and the live cover of Pink Floyd's High Hopes as both of those feature Marko (bass) as lead vocalist. Sorry for the loooooong post, but us Nightwish people get excited and love to encourage others along their Nightwish journey. Especially reactors as we then get to re-introduce ourselves as well, vicariously through you! Welcome to the Nightwish Army!!!

I've only heard this song when it's been sung by Tarja, the original singer of the band, and I know a lot of fans compare the singers constantly and argue about who is and has been the best, but they've all been great. It's impossible to honestly and fairly compare the three that have been so far with each other because they all have completely different voices and methods, but I just love how Floor has been able to bring her own soul into these songs, both old and new

Nightwish's composer Tuomas Holopainen (keyboards) uses A LOT of Christian /religious metaphors and allegories in his lyrics, especially in their earlier albums. You'll find tons of amazing stuff the deeper you dig! To draw you deeper into the Nightwish rabbit hole for starters I recommend "Storytime" from Wacken 2013 and "Yours is an empty Hope" live@Wembley!

There are buckets of emotional (And great) songs by Nigtwish. Example "Dead' Boy's Poet", "Nemo" , "Poet and Pendulum","Sleeping Sun" , "Elan" and "While Your Lips Are Still Red" . Leading vocalist Floor, not just singing great, but also lives every song thru with her body and arms and with her facial expressions...She totally sinks her self to the world of song and she takes listeners with her. That is a gift what is really rare, no matter how good singers some others are. And yes, always choose live versions...Great audio/video quality is available example from Tampere,Wacken,Wembley and Buenos Aires.

Hello Pastor Rob! Love your channel! So... You have finally reacted to Nightwish! Be prepared for the deluge of the Nightwish army!!! You will receive MANY more requests of songs by this epic symphonic metal band. My biggest recommendation is to always choose a live version if available. I look forward to your reaction and commentary on their song "The Greatest Show On Earth". Once again, be sure to react to a live concert version. The song is about the composer's fascination with the science of evolution, and even include a reading by Richard Dawkins in the score. The song is over 24 minutes long, so be prepared for a LONG video, as I'm sure your commentary on that piece will be deep.

If I could make one suggestion for a reaction: brother- stone sour I remember back in the day, my friends and I drove from Chicago to Montreal Canada to see them live. It was one of if not the best concerts I had ever been to. I have been to plenty and the atmosphere and the level of performance that Nightwish put into that evening were unforgettable. I usually do not go for symphonic or orchestral metal, but Nightwish will always have a soft spot in my heart.

I was one of the ones that requested this a loooong time ago, glad you finally found your way to one of the best bands making music today! Nightwish are very versatile, never expect the same thing twice. They mix many genres including power metal, symphonic metal, folk metal, Celtic, blues, folk, rock, etc! Always select Live versions of Nightwish's songs when possible, as their sound engineers do a fantastic job, and Nightwish are at their best Live! Hope you continue this Nightwish journey, you will not be disappointed! Best to save some of the Big, highly requested songs till you know the band a little better, and a little prior research on those songs will be very helpful! They do not consider themselves part of any Belief system, but rather consider themselves as Secular. Yes, Floor is 6' 1" and IMHO, one of the best female vocalists in the world today! Cheers for the journey ahead, it's a grand one!!

Floor was only with the band for 10 months at this concert. She was still recovering from her burnout when the band called in 2012. She has her own KZbin Channel and has done 3 Masterclass es. They have 2 longer songs. Tuomas the keyboardist writes about 97 percent of the songs. Her growling is awesome and she used to be a vocal coach.

Welcome to the world of Nightwish pastor and welcome to the art a the world of Tuomas Holopainen, mastermind, songwriter and keyboardist of Nightwish. Nightwish have a long history and they actually started their journey in 1996 with a song referencing directly to Jesus (the carpenter) and its life (i.e. Gethsemane). As time passed, and Tuomas grew up he apparently changed his mind about organized religions, and how they are abused to subjugate people and to justify violence (listen to weak fantasy). The band is today heavily inspired by the works of Richard Dawkins (the last two albums at least have a distinctive atheist feeling) but Tuomas is not the kind of guy that closes the door to spirituality that easily. He's still open and in search for the truth, so I won't be surprised if he changes mind in the future :)

One entire album is about the rise and fall of the Swedish empire around the 30 years war, another about WW1 - The Great War. They have a parallel history channel about the background history of each song. And they are awesome.
