An epic return to Nightwish's catalogue with one of their newest releases from the Yesterwynde album, out now! I had to wonderful opportunity to sit down with Floor Jansen for a Tea Time interview, and had to dive deep into where her sound is today. You are all in for a treat!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Nightwish's new album for the first time, and this performance of "An Ocean of Strange Islands”.

It's really crazy how they have developed over 25 years, their sound has evolved so much from their first album to their latest one and still you can somehow always tell it's Nightwish. Like there is something in the DNA of their music you can always find and that stayed the same during all these years. Also, it's safe to say that the entire army needs to see/hear this one live.

Listening to the whole album all the way throughout. Was like hearing a soundtrack to an epic fantasy movie Especially the last track "Lanternlight Which is the song that would play over the credits. And I'm sure that on repeated listens you will hear a lot more going on in the music. This album may well go down as a rock classic. And should win awards

This song is the journey of life, where you steer this ship with crowded sails to diffrent Islands, where each island represent a person you meet along, or a happening in your life, there is good islands and the more obscure islands, at the end with the pipe section, you react the final harbour, where you do not need to visit more islands, here you ancor up, the song could be taken diffrenly as the journey of the band as well, or a 3th option, for me its just this travel through life i get, its honestly a masterpiece of a song, proberly the best one from new album, love it!!

I take the line about “grapes of sour wine to solitude” part you referenced to be about making friends in our lives and having fun with them but then we all age (old grapes make sour wine ) and then we lose them or they lose us to death but we gladly take that pain in loss to enjoy the experience and joys we had together (don’t want to be an island of solitude). Reminds me of Elan “Building a sandcastle by a shore, a house of cards from a worn out deck”. You know the end result but it’s still fun doing it. Also..for any country fans somehow watching this kinda like The Dance by Garth Brooks …could’ve missed the pain but I’d have had to miss the dance.

Love your analysis. Tuomas said he used three orchestras on the album, a full 50 piece one, a small orchestra, and a chamber group, depending on what the song required. Probably not samples. The normal arranger of Tuomas's orchestral compositions, Pip, was ill, another person did it for YesterWynde. It's pronounced wined, from a 400 year old Old English song title, WesterWynde, about the West Wind. The voyage is travel through life, islands are the people you meet.

The orchestras were conducted by Mr James Shearman, he is an English conductor, orchestrator, and composer. He is perhaps best known for his contributions to film scores including those for Gosford Park, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Manchester by the Sea and numerous others. He acted as the arranger and the conductor. The orchestras and choirs/choral recordings were done in legendary Abbey Road Studios in London.

Uilleann pipes are bagpipes, the most advanced of all bagpipes. It doesn't have a mouthpiece like a lot of others, instead you fill the bag by pumping air out of a bellow under your other arm. So you can sing and play at the same time.

Thanks for sharing your respectful reaction to a song that for me explores themes of solitude, self-discovery, and the existential journey through life's trials. The imagery of the ocean, islands, and mariners reflects a metaphorical exploration of the human experience connecting with other individuals. The song captures the essence of navigating life’s uncertainties and finding one's place in a vast, often unwelcoming world. It suggests a longing for connection and understanding while grappling with the weight of past experiences and the isolation they can bring. P.S. Butterflies represent transformation on all levels, claims ecotherapist Anna Cariad-Barrett: "Butterflies show us how we can go within ourselves to dissolve old forms and morph, rebuilding and evolving ourselves," she explains, noting that they show us the importance of surrender and trust "as part of the essential process of growth and renewal."

It's quite pleasant and funny to me how you don't jump startled by the instrumental punch lol it ahows how used to it you have become. Regarding the song, this is the one we'd be looking forward to hear right from the start, a wonderful mixture of old and new Nightwish songs, but they left it as the icing on the cake that was later wrapped around the beautiful Lanternlight, I hope you also react to it.

Floor even sang live while being pregnant with Lucy, there's a compilation video of their song Tribal, and in some of those clips, her big belly is clearly visible. Simone Simons of Epica also performed live while pregnant, and Miyako of Lovebites did too, if I recall correctly. Miyako doesn't sing though, she's a guitarist/pianist, but still... remarkable women.

Elisabeth; I hope you realize that Floor sang Oh Holy night in finish when she was 9 month pregnant (first child?), and was forced to lighten the weight in the high tones. Six weeks after labor is nothing for her :) But the fact of pain explains why her voice is mixed so far back from the instruments than usual.
