In all fairness, I really don't see how either Tarja nor Floor could perform this song better. This is IMO easily the best of the Anette Olsen era, and one of Nightwish's very best songs ever.

Such symbolism in the lyrics. For instance: "All the dying children" It to me, talks about a loss of innocence. It really goes well with the theme of being caged into what is being called "reality's maze". This cage is golden, so, a lot of luxury, but ultimately, still a cage, it doesn't satiate the nightingale. Reality really is like a maze. A lot of dead ends and not knowing where to go to get to the place you wish to be. The singer is, of course, the nightingale. Nightingales holds different symbolism, but, the easiest ones to know of is, their song is thought of as sorrowful, or sometimes joyous. It is like, a soul song. Goes well, since she is singing about escaping "reality", as the title of the song suggests, "The Escapist". It feels like to me, her soul is caged. She sings the bittersweet melody of a nightingale. To me personally, "reality" symbolises the society values and systems in place, the things that cage your soul. Really, it will be different for everyone. But, it is the things that make you lose your child like wonder and lust for life, the things that drain your soul, the things that make you feel, well... dead. I mean, it is just my view of what the lyrics mean, but, i think the things that can make you feel this loss of innocence is something that can be different for each individual, the loss of the innocent mind, the loss of vitality for life, the love for life, the imagination and wonder of a child... Just my thoughts. :)

Mari Gaviria honestly I preferred Tarja and Annette. Still love night wish for who they are, but Floor Janson just isn't them. Has a wonderful voice still though. As far as this song, it wouldn't sound the same without Annette

Dark Passion Play is a great album and that's also because of Anette. I don't think Tarja or Floor could have given the songs the magical touch like Anette did. While Tarja's songs sound more like very enjoyable operas and Floor has a powerful voice, Anette does something to the songs that turns them into fairy tales. And I like that very much.

***** Yes, Anette got fired in 2012 and got replaced by Floor Jensen which is the currently lead singer of Nightwish... give her few years and Nightwish will boot her out as well. At the time, Anetter got pregnant and Nightwish wanted to continue their tour. During the tour, they happen to find Floor Jensen to fill in for Anette. So, Nightwish decided to fire Anette and give the job to Floor. They already released an album with Floor Jensen this year called: "Endless Forms Most Beautiful".

You know, It´s sad how people are still arguing about Nightwish´s singer and writing dumb stuff like "Nightwish is dead since Tarja´s departure" and "Anette sucks". Things change with time, styles, bands, everything. Sure Tarja COULD sing this, but this song didn't exist her era in Nightwish. Actually Tarja was singing classical style only in her first 3 albums, they changed her style to contemporary style singing in her last 2 albums. So her style was the same as Anette's and Floor's style in the two last albums, only that at times Tarja uses the classical voice, but the style still is different to her earliest albums. Easy to see the difference with the Sleeping Sun which was recorded twice, 1999 version she sang classical style and 2005 version in contemporary style. Beautiful song. What I think of when I hear this song is I really wish I could just put on a backpack and start walking to travel the world and it would actually work out. That would be the ultimate freedom and many amazing experiences along the way. If I didn't have connections in real life I even feel I could go to start up a group of equally crazy people right now who would do the same and leave life behind. It also would be empowering for a lot of people people that they do not absolutely need their jobs even if they hate it and do not need to stay with people who abuse them if they happen to live in the same house. I like Tarja's voice better, but the style of music with Annette is better, faster, catchier, more upbeat, but still has a slight gothic feel to it! Thats my opinion anyway....

Anette was nice on the studio versions, where you can do all the modifications you want. On live concert she was terrible, my gosh... On the other hand Tarja was amazing... They lost so much... :( But the new one, Floor, seems doing fine.. :)
