Lyrics The Islander:
An old man by a seashore at the end of day
Gazes the horizon with sea winds in his face
Tempest-tossed island, seasons all the same
Anchorage unpainted and a ship without a name
Sea without a shore for the banished one unheard
He lightens the beacon, light at the end of world
Showing the way, lighting hope in their hearts
The ones on their travels homeward from afar
[Chorus:]
This is for long-forgotten light at the end of the world
Horizon crying the tears he left behind long ago
The albatross is flying, making him daydream
The time before he became one of the world's unseen
Princess in the tower, children in the fields
Life gave him it all, an island of the universe
Now his love's a memory, a ghost in the fog
He sets the sails one last time saying farewell to the world
Anchor to the water, seabed far below
Grass still in his feet and a smile beneath his brow
[Chorus:]
This is for long-forgotten light at the end of the world
Horizon crying the tears he left behind long ago
[Chorus:]
This is for long-forgotten light at the end of the world
Horizon crying the tears he left behind long ago
So long ago

My grandfather passed away a month ago. He was a long-term captain and till his last day he continued to tell the stories of his adventures, his beloved sea and marine animals. He did not know what metal is, but he visited Finland in his 40s and he often answered me:"do you continue to lister to that band, the one with also a passion for sea in their lyrics." Any time I listen to this song I enjoy the memory of my beloved grandfather. I'm an atheist, but I hope he is still sailing among the waves, somewhere.

This actually sounds like an Irish sea shanty, i.e. sailing songs that were anachronistically associated with pirates. For an example of shanties, look up the Drunken Sailor album by The Irish Rovers. Another fitting genre is Celtic music, examples found in the Celtic Twilight albums. One strange coincidence I noticed: around 2:05, the flute melody sounds like The Alleged Paradigm by Epica (or Lugia's Song from Pokémon, take your pick).

I love ALL of Nightwish vocalists (Tarja, Marko, Anette, Troy and Floor). All of them fitted well in a different way, when it was needed. But, I don't know, the soft, angelical, and emotional way of Anette to sing brought a different experience for Nightwish. I totally understood now why she was choosen after Tarja's leaving. "Dark Passion Play" and "Imaginaerum" will remain forever as my favorite albums ever. So many emotions in these albums... Sorry, Anette, for recognizing your uniqueness only when you left. Love you!

Your sister is not truly gone. You can still meet her. God said "I will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away". The lyrics are beautiful- "...and a smile in his brow. This is the long forgotten light at the end of the world, horizon crying (because of) the tears he left long ago". I know I sound pretentious, but this song isn't about sadness, but the bright future that awaits the sailors in the waters of life. Keep the wheel steady and sails all unfurled, full speed ahead. I wish you that happy future, believe in it.

I sent this video to my mother the other day - she knows no one single word of English - and asked her to watch it and guess what the song is about; and she got the meaning right from A to Z. I congratulated her on that and she replied: "Let's congratulate those who conveyed such deep meanings to someone ignorant of the language sung." This tells much about the enthralling universality of music and of human feelings in general. So, thank you, Nightwish!

Who else noticed that Marco's part is different on this than on the album version? I got Dark Passion Play not too long after it came out, but I had never listened to the Islander Single or watched this video until just now. That final chorus hit and it sent shivers down my spine just like it did 10 years ago.

For most of history humans did not know the limits of the world. There was always a mysterious horizon, and the imagination lay beyond. Children dreamt of being explorers, sailing into the sunset, seeing what lay beyond the hills, finding riches and monsters alike. Many people died in its pursuit, but now the surface of the Earth is charted, mapped, visible from satellites. To me, this song speaks of a yearning, one that is no stranger to many of us. The desire to journey, to explore, to adventure, risks be damned. What horizon can we chase now though? The depths of the ocean, the vastness of space, there are horizons still, but beyond the reach of the many. This song seems a lamentation of the loss of our naiveté, a cry for the adventures of the fairytales and romances. I don’t shun the advances of our modern age, but the stories of the past spark my imagination. Tales of vikings, of pirates, of genii, of creatures great and terrible, of battles that when told seem epic and noble. It will be a fine day when we again race to a horizon. Many stories have yet to be written.

This song has such a poignant meaning for me. It makes me think of the long, drawn out battle that my husband had with cancer. He knew his days were numbered, worked tediously on his collection until he couldn't concentrate anymore. Eventually, he drifted into a dementia, in which he saw long, gone ghosts from his past. This was just weeks before he passed away. So, yes. This song holds a special meaning for me.

I feel like Nightwish has found their best band roster as a Sextet with Floor on lead vocals, but I am not sure Marko's absence will be disruptive to their creative chemistry or not. It will be interesting to hear how Marko's replacement adapts to his unique voice and contributions. I think Marko will be sorely missed by fans and band alike. I wish him well on his journey of healing and rediscovery of what matters most to him. I hope he finds the validation he seeks looking inward, as I don't think he will find it in this outer world.

Z pewnością wielu fanów będzie wracało do wspaniałych utworów w jego wykonaniu... Mam nadzieję, że pomimo trudnego okresu, odzyska wewnętrzny spokój i wzbudzi pozytywną energię do muzyki i świata... An old man by a sea shore at the end of day Gazes the horizon with sea winds in his face. Tempest-tossed island, seasons all the same. Anchorage unpainted and a ship without a name. Sea without a shore for the vanished one unheard He lightens the beacon, light at the end of world. Showing the way, lighting hope in their hearts, The ones and their travels homeward from afar. [Chorus:] This is for long-forgotten light at the end of the world. Horizon's crying the tears he left behind long ago. The albatross is flying, making him daydream The time before he became - one of the world`s unseen Princess in the tower, children in the fields - Life gave him it all: an island of the universe. Now his love`s a memory, a ghost in the fog. He sets the sails one last time saying farewell to the world. Anchor to the water, seabed far below, Grass still in his feet and a smile beneath his brow.
